[lace] Russian tape lace book

2009-11-12 Thread A . González
Hello all.

I am very interested in Russian bobbin lace, and have seen a book on
Vologda's grounds. The book is
*The Technique of Vologda Lace*, by Vera Cockuyt. As I haven't seen the
book, I would like to have some references before buying it. Do any of you
have the book or know it? I would like to know if it includes diagrams,
explanations, pictures, patterns, etc. Any information is welcome.

Greetings from

Antje, in Spain.

[lace] Lace Guild Mag/ a question

2009-11-12 Thread Dmt11home
I have been enjoying the Oct. 2009 issue of Lace Guild Magazine and have
just gotten to the inside back cover. There is a piece identified as
Valenciennes Bobbin Lace Lappet, 18th century. Lace identification based on
small
images in lace magazines is not perhaps a good idea, but this piece looks
more like a part lace to me, rather than Valenciennes which is a continuous
lace. Perhaps someone who has seen the piece could tell me if I am right. My
interest in it lies in the fact that we have a piece of lace that
resembles this at the museum where I volunteer. It was identified in the
catalogue
of the Blackborne auction (it is from the Blackborne collection) as being
of a type called Old Honiton. It may well not be English in origin, but
there are things about our piece that make it seem like not the usual Brussels
part lace. Is there any other information available about this piece?

[lace] Lacemaking in Norway?

2009-11-12 Thread Mark, aka Tatman
Is there a lacemaking tradition in Norway, if any?  I know about
Hardanger and other embroideries existed.  But wondered what type, if
any, of lace was made.  The reason I am asking is because my wife's
roots came from North East of Oslo, Norway and we were having fun doing a
bit of research. My wife embroiders and I make lace.   I just
wondered if there is such a lace.  If not a tradition, then what type
of lace are modern day Norwegians making?  It would be fun to make
her a heritage outfit(for our heritage demonstrations) that features
Norwegian embroidery and lace, being that is her heritage.  Mine is
easier to figure out(English, German, Irish.quite the melting pot!)

Thanks for any insight,

[lace] Lace magazine

2009-11-12 Thread Janice Blair
Hooray, my magazine arrived today. Thanks to all for letting me know that some
of you had received your copy on this continent. Especially nice when I saw I
had a pattern and an article in this edition. That was probably why I was
anxious for it to arrive, so I would have a nice surprise.

My article is really about using Lace RXP to design a hedgehog, but the story
started about how I did a cardstock cut-out of the hedgehog to pin on beginners
pillows. Unfortunately the drawing of the hedgehog is blank, maybe the print
on the body was so light that it did not pick up in the printing. Anyway, on
his body I had drawn an arrow pointing to the right that said Cross and
another arrow going left that said Twist. Below that was explanations for
cloth stitch (xtx), halfstitch (xt) and wholestitch (xtxt). Maybe they would
have confused British lacemakers who use linen stitch, which is why I always
put the x and t explanations.

I will try to get a color photo of the celtic circle pattern on my website as
it is in black and white in the magazine. It is different to the celtic circle
I entered in the IOLI original competition.

[lace-chat] How to install a home security system ; )

2009-11-12 Thread Clay Blackwell

HOW TO INSTALL A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM

1. Go to a secondhand store and buy a pair of men's used size 14-16 work
boots.

2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns Ammo
Magazine.

3. Put a few giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines.

4. Leave a note on your door that reads:

Bubba,

Bertha, Duke, Slim, I went for more ammo and beer. Be back in an hour.
Don't mess with the pit bulls; they attacked the mailman this morning and
messed him up bad. I don't think Killer took part, but it was hard to tell
from all the blood. Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the house.

Better wait outside. Be right back.

Re: [lace-chat] Love and marriage

2009-11-12 Thread Martha Krieg
We were visiting his parents in Maryland and had been to the Lutheran
Christmas Eve service. My hair was all done up (by a hairdresser for
once!) because we'd been to a diplomatic party the night before - his
father was in the foreign service - and I was wearing a red velvet
dress I'd made that had white lace sleeves with velvet wristbands.
(No, I didn't make the lace. This was long before I learned to do
that!) It seemed to take forever for his sisters and parents to go to
bed as we watched the lights on the Christmas tree. Finally, they
did, and by the Christmas tree he asked me if I'd be willing to be
his wife, and gave me the emerald-cut diamond I still wear. That was
in 1967; we married in June of 1968 two days before his college
graduation. I turned 20 the day before the ceremony. In the Fall, I
went back to college for my junior year, and he was drafted into the
Army for Vietnam. So it's been 41 years now, three kids and a slew of
foreign exchange students.
