[lace] lace in Textileforum

2010-09-03 Thread Vibeke Ervo
Textileforum 3/2010 was in my letterbox yesterday, it is so new that
it is not yet on their homepage http://www.textileforum.com/

It is a special Lace issue: lots about modern lace and design. Besides
8 pages about machine lace and 2 pages about Oya.

2010-09-03 Thread Celtic Dream Weaver
If you go here...
http://celticdreamweave.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html
you can see my Louise Colgan Butterfly that I made from her Milanese DVD. The
DVD makes a wonderful teacher. Everything is very well explained step by step
on
the DVD. I think you should be able to get it from Holly Van Sciver or the
Lacemaker. I don't remember it being very expensive either. I have also made
the
Milanese Heart that is also a pattern of Louise. NOw if I could just get her
Milanese Angel pattern that would be so great. Does she have any new Lace
Milanese books out that I don't know about. I love Milanese for all of its
braids.
I am really excited...I will be going and staying in Ithaca, New York
during Columbus Weekend and I will be taking a wire bobbin lace jewelry class
being taught by Josee' Poupart. It should be fun and right up to something I
will enjoy doing. I have two dozen alumium bobbins my husband made for me at
his
job he doesn't have anymore for me to use with wire. I will try them out
finally
and see how they are. They should make beautiful happy tinkling music as I lace.

RE: [lace] Working Bobbin Lace PAtterns using Wire

2010-09-03 Thread Lorri Ferguson
I don't know much about using wire but I was making a flower yesterday that
has
to be gathered after laced. I decided to use wire in one area to stiffen it
and
it turned out pretty nice. The other threads were DMC 40. I used 34 gauge
wire
for this. It is the first flower in Flower Fantasy by Rosemary Shepherd. I
used the wire in place of the red thread.

 Marji

After making several all wire pieces (I took classes with Lenka) I have made
several pieces with wire and fiber combined. My lifesized 3-D Iris was a
class at the LA IOLI 2009. this does work well, but do not use Sterling
Silver wire as it will tarnish and you will not be able to clean/polish it. I
usually use #30-#34 gauge wires. One can get some great colors, mostly at
online sources. JoAnn's and Michael's do carry some of the colored wires but
usually in the larger (too large for lace) sizes. Another source is the
colored copper wire used in the coil of electric motors. Old motors can be a
source or a shop that repairs electric motors.

Hope this helps, Lorri F -who has used wire in lace as well as when I was a
Manufacturing Jeweler.
PS If anyone has more questions, I will do my best to answer.

2010-09-03 Thread hottleco
Hello All! Decided to post this in case anyone is close to Pittsburgh
interested in coming. Pittsburgh Lace Group (PLG) is hosting a technique class
with Debbie Beever on Oct 1, 2 3. Earlier this year, I saw photos of the
class samples they are lovely. The designs are based on vintage tiles made
in the 19thC in England, Germany, Belgium France. Think of Monet's kitchen
tiles you get the idea. Please contact Amy at gibbons...@verizon.net for
more info. Cost of the workshop is $110/members $125/non. Hope to see you
there. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA

Re: [lace-chat] 'Lisa and the Lacemaker: An Asperger Adventure'

2010-09-03 Thread scotlace
If you go to Amazon UK you can read the first few pages. It is clearly
written for fairly young children - 8 ish - and presumably has been written
more to explain Asperger's than bobbin lace. Listed on Amazon are other tales
concerning the condition written by the same author. There is no indication
in the first few pages of how much the author knows about lace.
