I have had a gentle reminder from her about trimming posts as well. But it was in my early days, I have only been on the list for a couple of years. Re: [lace] RE: the new book from Martina Wolter-Kampmann happy birthday Ara...
I have written to Roseground to find out if they are going to stock it in the UK. They seem to have the best selection of European books. I use Ulrike's book a lot, but find that most people who have it expect it to work by osmosis from the book shelf. Once you work through some of her samples, there are a lot of excellent techniques in there. For a mat with lots of ground, her detour technique will make a near invisible join, and it's just this sort of design which is hard to join by traditional methods. Another good book for joins is the Springetts book on Magic Threads. This will show you near perfect joins for Beds lace. If there is even one more technique in the new book it will be worth the money to me. Re: [lace] RE: the new book from Martina Wolter-Kampmann happy birthday Arachne
I have Martina's book and it is more than interesting. Ulrike likes to finish her laces with knots in the traditional way and Martina teaches how to do it with magic threads and using other quite interesting methods. For me Martina's 'Invisible' is a step forward in achiving tidy finishes. The explanations in the book are clear but if you have still any doubt, there is the DVD (in German and English) to help you. Maria Greil from Spain 2011/4/15 Louise Bailey bail...@slb.com Dear Arachnes, This looks a very interesting book - tidy finishes are one of the reasons I avoid mats handkerchiefs! Has anyone had a chance to see how it compares to Ulrike Lohr's 'beginning of the end'? Looking back at my email archive (I do clean it out regularly but keep most arachne stuff) I see I joined in 1996 - gulp that means I've been making lace about that long. Finding Arachne was a great boon, and I learnt a lot and have met some lovely people through it. I still appreciate finding the email digests when I come into work - it keeps me sane! Thanks Liz, and everyone for keeping it going. Louise In Cambridge - with signs of spring - primroses, cowslips and bluebells not to mention the May blossom stating early. [lace] Admin: Andrea Lamble and a little security advice
Please ignore the emails from Andrea's account. I've seen the help, I'm in trouble, I need money wired to this address fraud a lot lately. It means that someone has hacked her account and is using it. In the meantime, please try to choose strong passwords for your email accounts (more than 8 letters, including both upper/lower case letters, numbers, characters like @ $ % , etc) and DO NOT USE THE SAME PASSWORD for all your accounts! If you use the same password and one of your accounts is compromised, the hacker is going to try Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, Paypal, Yahoo, Amazon, and everything else that he or she can think of! One recommendation that I heard is to have a strong base password, like eR%*foA77Qt and add the first 2 consonants and the first 2 vowels of each account. For example, if you had eR%*foA77Qt as your base password, your Gmail account password might be eR%*foA77Qtgmai. Facebook would be eR%*foA77Qtfcae. It's not foolproof but it makes it a little harder for someone to guess the pattern. Alternatively, if you tend to use only one computer or carry around a mini USB drive (thumb drive, disk on key, flash drive), you can download free password protection programs (like AnyPassword) and store your passwords there. Last, if you're on vacation, be very, very careful if you're using a public computer in an Internet cafe. A lot of public computers are infected with programs that track your keystrokes. If you must log on to your mail account on an unsecured computer, at least change your password immediately. There are programs you can download that let you type your password by clicking a keyboard on the screen. This makes it much harder for a program to catch your keystrokes. (But it doesn't help if they've set up cameras to watch the keyboard while you type) Avital Arachne moderator -- Blog: http://apinnick.wordpress.com Photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/spindexr - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Re: book from Martina Wolter-Kampmann
Hello, the book Unsichtbar - Invisible from M. Wolter is in German and English. There is a DVD in in both languages too. As the title says you find possibilities to let the ends of your lace-work become invisible. It is clearly written with lots of drawings and color photos how to do things. She starts with the different kind of knots and magic-thread, shows different beginnings and endings without knots and these with different lace techniques. You find the prickings for the designs on which she demonstrates the tricks at the end of the book. The book is a hardcover one so it will not become a card-play using it often. As I still metioned it is worth to buy it. You can order it directly by her or over B. Fay. Re: [lace] Admin: Andrea Lamble and a little security advice
To add to this excellent advice, be very, very careful when using a smartphone to access your e-mail! I was in Paris in February on business, and took some time for tourism. I was standing outside the Louvre after visiting the museum, and decided to try to access my gmail account on my smartphone. It asked me to log in again to improve the services that Google can offer. I thought about that for a minute, but mentally shrugged my shoulders and gave it my password. It didn't take me to my e-mail, but to a cannot display page message. A week later, I logged into my gmail account on a computer, to find that someone had just accessed my account from Thailand and send spam to everyone in my contacts list (literally, 15 minutes earlier). Since my password had never been hacked before, I am blaming the Louvre incident for the problem -- someone was sitting there in the area, redirecting websurfers and harvesting their passwords. Adding to the problem: what account do you use as your password recovery account? Nearly all of the sites where I have a password send password confirmations to my gmail address -- all a hacker has to do is search for password and harvest what they find. Consider using a different account than that which you use while traveling, so your other passwords aren't endangered. Moral of the story: be very, very careful with your passwords, your smartphones, and everything else. If something doesn't look right, it probably isn't. [lace] Point ground
Thank you for your input, Lorelei. I agree completely, including with your assessment of Palliser. Of the 21 preserved black silk Ipswich laces from 1789-90 from Ipswich, Massachusetts in Library of Congress, almost half uses kat stitch ground and the rest some variation of Brussels/Torchon ground. The only place point ground is used is as a filling in one of the samples. Re: [lace] RE: first lace pillow
The ceiling tile idea was smart! My first lace pillow was an insect pinning board (way too hard to push any but the finest pins in, whereas I was using sewing pins), with crochet thread wound around the top of 4 1/2 wood screws. (Instead of clicking pleasantly as I worked, they clanked!) I didn't know where to get supplies yet and couldn't wait to get started on the bobbin lace sampler in the Reader's Digest Compendium of Needle Crafts, or some such title. If I had know how much usable pillows and bobbins (even Continental bobbins) were going to cost me eventually I might never have started. Thank heavens I didn't know! Now it's too much fun to stop. Re: [lace] RE: first lace pillow
My first pillow was a 65 inch square HD foam pillow, covered with blanket, then drill. I made a piece from a Woman's Weekly annual...about 55 inches long, then tape lace decoration back up each side...thought it was pretty special at the time and although it hangs in my lace room, I can look at it and Thank God I have improved somewhat. The pillow is currently empty, but the smaller 45 inch one I made at the same time has a growing itinery...currently a possum bookmark, that must be evicted for a wire lace necklace beckons, then I think there must be some matching earrings and I hear the flutter of a couple of wire lace butterflies getting louder... my other pillows are mostly ordinary packing foam and do not hold the pins as well with wire...and they are all busy too...ho hum Now I am off to check out the lace goodies rescued from an estate...the owner has no idea what or how they are used, and is not interested in learning but felt that her MIL loved them enough that they should find a home with someone willing to continue their use rather than add to the landfill problem. Hello Sue and everyone If you have access to conservator's supplies (mail order?) there is a microcrystalline wax product used for cleaning and restoring antique furniture and wooden objects. A small tin is all you would need. The wax is absorbed by the wood and shouldn't harm the threads. For an off-the-shelf treatment, Murphy's oil soap maybe? Brush them off with a soft brush to get the dust off, wipe with a moist cloth (not wet), use a good quality wood wax (beeswax based like Renaissance Micro-Crystalline Wax Polish which is used by museums) and then use them as much as possible the heat and moisture of your hands will help the wax go deeply into the wood and make it live again. I've gotten emails from my sister which suggest to me that her account has also been hacked. She is traveling right now, so I hope all is well with her. Thank all of you for your good advice regarding passwords. Groan... I've got a lot of work to do to establish safer ones! But regarding Avital's question - if I were in trouble would I turn to lace-making buddies for help? I think if I were in a foreign country and had a glimmer of a hope that an Arachne friend lived nearby, I might ask for help... but never money! I got it both ways -- in private and on the list -- and read it first on my personal mail. Since I don't know Andrea personally, I was startled to see the apology for not letting me know of her trip. Once that first alarm bell sounded, I read the rest of the message (in poor English, not really excused by the trauma described) with some amusement, looking for other oddities and inconsistencies. Then trashed it, moved on to reading Arachne and, by golly, there it was again :) -- Tamara P Duvallhttp://t-n-lace.net/ Lexington, Virginia, USA (Formerly of Warsaw, Poland) To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here.
