RE: [lace] Lace in East Canada?

2011-05-15 Thread Jay Ekers
Thanks to all who replied to my query.

Unfortunately, the Mail administrator returned the e-mails I sent to the
contacts, listed in the USA and Canadian lace groups site. I will search
telephone books when I get geographically closer.

Re: [lace] judging lace

2011-05-15 Thread Ilske Thomsen
Hello Everybody,
Having been twice a judge I can't see any problem touching the lace pieces.
First you look mostly with your eyes, second you will wash your hands before
don't having rings standing out on them and when you must take the lace into
your hand you do it very carefully. One could let the lace flip from one paper
to another without using fingers and other tricks.
There will be only pencils on the table for notices.
In my opinion people judging lace knew how to handle them.

Ilske, just back from a seminar

[lace] Oya, Woven Lace scissors to die for

2011-05-15 Thread hottleco
Hello All! What a fun time at the Pittsburgh Folk Festival yesterday! The
Pittsburgh Lace Group put on a nice display as a member I sat in on the
festivities. Amy brought her tree covered with lace Easter eggs, plus lots of
samples of her work her roller pillow. Dewi, Margot I brought various
projects explained our work to many visitors. I was pleased that so many
took turns at the try it pillow--several inches were added to the ugly
bandage! It will be cut off the pillow at the end of the season be used as a
garland on the PLG Christmas tree. Lots of literature was distributed a lady
from Lithuania one from Ukraine hope to visit us again on a regular meeting
night. During the lunch break, I took a tour of the booths found some
students from Turkey selling Oya other handcrafted items. I posted a photo
on webshots of the adorable cherries that I purchased. Then at the Scotland
booth, I found a lady making woven lace on a loom. Very interesting
stuff: she had woven a huge sampler as well as decorating her nationality
costume with pieces of her work. Note to self--take a camera next year! Of
course the food/drink, music entertainment were a blast as well. I wanted to
share some scissor eye candy I saw online at the French Needle. Usual
disclaimers! Lisa has posted up some new ones made in Nogent--exquisite
handles with price tags to match, moan. Still free to peek though! Sincerely,
Susan Hottle, Erie, PA where we've had monsoons all day, the rain gauge is
full--over 6 inches today Walnut Creek near our home looks like chocolate
milk with white cap waves

There's a lovely bit in today's Daily Telegraph (UK paper), about the
TV show The Apprentice. The competitors have such huge opinions of
themselves that it's very funny to watch. The Telegraph reports:
After the boys' team had elected to sell orange juice, the
entrepreneurial elite paid a visit to a fruit market. 'Is that an
orange?' asked one Alpha Male. 'I dunno,' replied his team leader.

And yet, they're but lowly apprentices in the high self-esteem stakes. The
host of the show (US version) is now talking about, possibly, running for the
office of the US President. The mind boggles.

More about the show and its various offspring:
