[lace] Catalogue of 16th and 17th Century Portraits
I have just had a look at this catalogue. Wonderful. I am especially intrigued by #30/31 - and when brought up in close-up, the strips of appliqué on her dress appears to be gold and silver Lace - similar to laces shown in Le Pompe, etc. What do others think? I had always felt that the early laces were possibly/probably appliquéd onto the clothes, and that many of the portraits showed lace that was not so easily recognised as such, due to them looking like strips of embroidery. Thank you very much for this: not only have I just spent hours enjoying the art and lace, but I've also found three new items of fifteenth century sculpture for my history project. Fw: [lace] Query about exclusively for you
I clicked before thinking this time and its an advert for viagra, so deleting is the right option. I have since scanned my computer to be on the safe side. Usually I am much more careful but early on a sunday morning I slipped up this time. Sue T I agree with Jacquie, it looks suspicious to me, so I immediately deleted it. [lace] Dyed threads
Hi Arachnids I have been following the discussions on dyed threads with interes. I am surprised that no one has mentioned that bleaching also has an effect on the thickness and properties of threads. The first time I came across 140/2 Bockens linen the trader told me that the thread is spun before bleaching and that bleaching removes some of the fibre, hence a highly bleached pure white thread is finer than a lightly bleached half bleach thread and the unbleached thread is the thickest. Intrigured I bought some of each and, sure enough, found that the thicknesses vary substantially. Bleaching also affects the flexibility of threads and their strength. Needless to say the size was calculated before bleaching but I'm not sure if the EU have changed the rules. Yes. It's another spam email with a random link in the middles of the text. Seems to be a lot of it about at the moment. [lace] Lace sample book
"There are Thomas Lester's Bedfordshire samples, samples from Luton museum which are point ground, and so forth." But those don't have pages of directions. The formula of pages of directions and a *picture* of a sample is fairly standard to this day so we'd need a lot more information to track down the specific one you mean. By pages of directions do you mean the old-fashioned way such as in the early DMC books where each pinhole was numbered to match the directions? But I wonder as you specify samples rather than pictures if you'd seen (or heard of) a much rarer book where the instructions are illustrated by pieces of real lace? If so, I don't know what this is. Re: [lace] lace sample book
Hello Marilyn If its a book from England, that is quite old, there is the little book on point ground by Catherine Channer, first published in 1928, which has very details illustrations. Margaret Maidment also produced one 'Bobbin Lace Work' in the 1930's I think. Also the Eunice Arnolds torchon book for real beginners was probably published in the early 1980's. Just to name a few! Knowing the type of lace would help and also how old is quite old? Diana in Northants - Original Message - From: "Marilyn Vogl" To: Sent: Sunday, June 12, 2011 12:06 AM Subject: [lace] lace sample book I asked this question some time ago, and I don't believe I got an answer, or I missed it. I am wondering if you know of a book, it is quite old, that has pages of directions and a sample of each piece of lace to correspond with the directions. I am looking for a title or maybe the person who wrote this book. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.
