[lace] Lace in paintings at Amsterdam airport

2011-09-30 Thread Steph Peters
The Rijksmuseum has a mini museum at Schiphol airport. There's a gift shop
area on the ground floor, with a pod above it to provide a secure climate
controlled area for displaying objects from the museum. The current
exhibition is paintings from the golden age of Dutch painting, and portraits
of women from the same era. This coincides very well with the period in
which much lace was worn, so more than half the portraits and some of the
other paintings have lace on clothing. It is sumptuous, layer on layer in
some cases, and even the black lace worn over black fabric is painted well
enough for the type of lace to be recognisable.
Do go take a look if you are in the airport. The museum is always an
interesting way to spend some waiting time, but this exhibition is
particularly good.

I don't have a pic of it. Not sure when the next time I would visit the
museum. But I will have a camera handy. ;)

I am looking for the Bulletin of the IOLI, Volume 21, Number 1 (Fall

Thanks!

[lace] BLacing a Flax Spinner

2011-09-30 Thread Tatman
I am embarking on an interesting journey in my lace. I friend of mine who
spins flax(who also is a beginner bobbin lacer) spun some linen thread out
of her stock. She gave me a hank and I told her I would see how it laced
up. Mind you, it is very rough thread, yet fine enough(like 50 weight
cotton). I found this picture of one spinning flax. I plan on using the
picture as my design and lacing directly from it. In the photo attached you
can see I have pinned the picture to my bolster pillow and wound some large
bobbins waiting to get started. After it is finished, I will give it to my
friend, the spinner/lacemaker.

Today at lunch I started on the spinning piece. I utilized my Honiton and
Bruges skills to start the top of her cap. I used cloth stitch with 4
about the pin(pin under 4) edges. I plan to keep the shapes simple with no
fancy stitches. I want to keep the lines clean and make sure that it looks
like a flax spinner. So far looking like I hoped!

Thus starts my designing in bobbin lace(something I haven't done much of
yet)

Re: [lace] looking for booklet

2011-09-30 Thread Clive Betty Rice
I have that issue of the IOLI Bulletin and will be pleased to copy the
page for you if you are a member of IOLI. Are you? I believe it would be
illegal, or at least unethical, for me to do otherwise. If you aren't a
member, why don't you join? It is a marvelous organization and
encompasses all sorts of laces. Happy Lacemaking, Betty Ann RiceRoanoke,
