[lace] Beveren lace
I second Susie Johnson's comments. Helena is an awesome instructor and her class is very interesting. You will learn technique that will be useful in all the point ground laces that you work. Beveren is worked with the footside on the left. You pin outside the gimp - this is unique to this lace. Beveren also has a straight picot edge. As already mentioned, it was used for the Dutch caps. [lace] Lace Event Calendars on LaceNews
I've finally come up with a format that I'm happy with for summarizing lace events, worldwide, including exhibitions, lace days, conventions, etc. I've got them listed in a monthly calendar format, and you can click on each event to get to the formal blog writeup. This is to be found in the middle of the bottom part of the banner header, under the title "Lace Event Calendars". The current one for December is pretty sparse, not much going on this month. I did do versions for Sep, Oct, and Nov, and am working on the January one now. Feedback is appreciated, thanks! [lace] The ad-blocker that stole Christmas
We've had a couple of emails from people using Firefox not being able to see the pictures in the windows of The Lace Guild Advent Calendar. After consulting with the Forensic Department at the North Pole we have ascertained that the culprit is a Firefox plugin, Adblock Plus. The genius who wrote this piece of software programmed it to look for and block graphics files starting with 'ad'. Like adv1.jpg, adv2.jpg, the names we used for the pics in the windows. Thank you for that. We have now renamed the pics, and although this may cause a slight delay for everyone the next time they open a window, it will give relief to the victims of Adblock Plus. Jean & David in snowy Glasgow PS Anyone can make a mistake. I realised today that the pricking for the bauble pattern linked to the window for 2nd December had got squashed - it should be 6 cm high and 5.1 cm wide. I've now corrected the page (but you may need to reload to get it to display). Apologies to all and especially to Sue Turnbull who provided the pattern. Re: [lace] Beveren lace
Dear Diane, I'm looking at the class list for the IOLI convention next summer and am interested in Beveren lace. All of the answers you have received are correct but lots of your questions will be answered when you get your next IOLI bulletin. Helena Fransens has written a lovely article about it with lots of pictures. Advanced Beveren, like the pictures on Lori's web page, can be quite difficult but beginning Beveren is very pleasant to work, interesting without being overwhelming. So let those pictures excite you rather than scare you. Additionally, Helena is a wonderful instructor, one of the best I have ever had. Re: [lace] lace shoes & men's shoe buttons
Now I'm wondering if there were lace spats??? . There certainly were! They may have been the most impractical garments ever thought of, but I have a pair. They were in a bag of bits and pieces given to an amateur drama group I belonged to. The wardrobe mistress could see no possible use for them, so she passed them on to me. They must date from 1900-1910. They are made of chemical lace, have press-studs (poppers) rather than buttons, and an elastic strap to hold them under the foot. There were actually two pairs, one natural cream, the other dyed brown. So I have donated one pair to the Lace Guild. They were their object of the month for April 2009.
