[lace] Six thread crossing
Dear Cheryl, Lora and Fellow Spiders, I offer the following alternative instructions for a 6-thread crossing - in words for those who are not diagram-oriented, and not requiring you to number the bobbin positions, since that explanation is available elsewhere and I don't find it particularly helpful either. I am normally someone who prefers diagrams, but I also find the comings and goings in a 6-pair crossing hard to follow. I find it easiest to describe a new operation in terms I already use and understand. There a couple of basic rules and you already know these. 1. Cross is left bobbin over right bobbin, twist is right over left. 2. Cross occurs BETWEEN 2 adjacent pairs (CROSS with your friend, so leave for a new partnership!), twist occurs WITHIN a pair. (A concept courtesy of Doris Southard's book). We start with the 3 pairs coming into the star and these should each have the desired number of twists already in place. Put crosses between the incoming pairs (ie between 1st and 2nd and also between 2nd and third pairs). Twist the middle pair. Put crosses between each of the pairs (ie between 1st and 2nd and also between 2nd and third pairs). Twist the outside pairs (ie 1st and 3rd pairs) and put PIN in the middle of the middle pair. Put crosses between the incoming pairs (ie between 1st and 2nd and also between 2nd and third pairs). Twist the middle pair. Put crosses between each of the pairs (ie between 1st and 2nd and also between 2nd and third pairs). Twist all pairs with the desired number of twists. SUMMARY of the sequence (starting to look easier now with less words): Crosses Twist middle Crosses Twist outsides and pin Crosses Twist middle Crosses Hope this helps, Christine Johnson, along-time lurker (Sydney, Australia) - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Lace sculpture
The refurbishment of Kensington Palace includes a light lace sculpture. The palace will open to the public on Monday, the 26th. On the artist's website are photos of other installations, and a video of the light s changing so that the lace appears to drift. Mesmerizing to watch! It is put on by a local lace guild each year. This summer it's being hosted by guilds in Minneapolis/ St. Paul. Last year it was in Portland, the year before in Los Angeles, etc. It's not a trade show, organized by a convention-organizing company in the same city year after year. It was in Rockford (not far from Chicago) a few years ago. There may be smaller get-togethers in the Midwest US, but I don't know about any. Someone may chime in with more info. Robin P. Re: [lace] Chicago convention - lace guilds and lace activities
It is important to understand that if people do not join lace guilds there are not enough members and volunteers to support a convention/show like the annual one that is associated with America's International Old Lacers Inc. (IOLI). This also applies to all the other nations where there are lacemakers and large guilds. Vendors pay to participate in the sales rooms, and must be assured there will be customers for their wares. The vendors also have to pay for travel, rooms, meals. The guilds have to guarantee a certain number of rooms in the convention hotel will be occupied by paying guests. These arrangements must be made years in advance because we are competing with lucrative organizations and government agencies for the hotel space commitment we make!! Many people want everything for free, but in the real world of lace, if you do not pay dues to a guild, buy books, buy supplies, take classes, and physically share love of lace and lacemaking with others, you cannot expect there to be lace events near you. Think about how much it costs for you to own, operate, and repair a computer so you can communicate (for free) with Arachne (which has a private sponsor). The computer industry does not do anything for free, whereas lace lovers are very generous. The nice thing about lace is that many people volunteer their lifetime of experience and time, and donate money to help it survive in a fast-paced, impersonal modern world. It is amazing how many lace experts are doing research and sharing with others via our large (you could say national) lace guilds and the quarterly bulletins (magazines) that are sent to members. Those who only belong to _lace@arachne_ (mailto:lace@arachne are) are missing so much current information. All are urged to join at least one large lace guild and to support/attend lace activities -- it is the only way lacemaking will survive. We do not have corporations underwriting us, and must be mindful of the constant danger to preservation of this wonderful textile's history and future. Re: [lace] Chicago convention - lace guilds and lace activities
Oh I do so agree with you Jeri.I am amazed at how many people won't join a Guild or lace group because they think that it has nothing to offer them, only to complain later when it is no longer there. [lace] More on the Arizona archives
Our friend John Cropper has been busy in the last little while. There is a website called archive.org which has scanned many old books. I was able to sort out the lace ones from their amazing collection. These are what John has put up on the website, http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/this-month.html for those who might be interested.
