I finished the Christine Mirecki silk scarf about two weeks ago, just never
got
round to taking a photo. The needlelace collar I finished today. I made it
in
Gutterman 100/3 silk, using one whole spool. ...I feel
very virtuous finishing two large items. Now I can wind the hundred or
so bobbins I need for the Lester Beds class in nearly two weeks time. Hope
to

see some of you at the Arachne lunch in St. Paul, Minnesota.

is a class I took with Liz Ligetti last year at convention and the other
flowers and leaves were from Catherine Barley's book. I still need to work
on my netted ground. I think I must have been tired when I did some of it
because the size is not consistent. I worked on the scarf during the day
and did the needlelace watching tv at night, which also might account for
the uneven netting.

Hello All! OMG Janice--I would wear either one, if you let me G !!! Since I
have neither the skills nor the attention span to complete such projects, I'm
just thrilled that you have posted your eye candy for vicarious enjoyment! As
a smaller project, I could see one of the floral collar motifs applied to the
toe of a shoe. H, that would be some enchanted slipper! The Caen photos

RE: [lace] Anyone ever seen anything like this?

2012-07-20 Thread Diane Z
Looks similar to the trim card-winders that stores used to display the
lace/trims/etc on the shop shelves. The fabric stores used to purchase
trims in bulk and then wind off smaller yardage onto card stock for display
-- the same as we see now done now by the distributors to the smaller fabric
stores. The winders now hold the stiff cardboard while the trim is being
wound. The winder shown could have wound the trim to the cardboard size and
then the cardboard was inserted inside for the shelf display.

Hello Laurie and everyone

I had a further thought, if the distance between top and bottom of the
winder is half of 45, or once around equals 45 inches, then this winder was
used for measuring or packaging, in ells. One ell = 45 inches.

[lace] Invention of Needle-lace in East Tyrol?

2012-07-20 Thread Linda Walton
There is new evidence that needle-lace may not have begun in Italy, but
further north.

This link takes you to the website of the University of Innsbruck:

http://www.uibk.ac.at/urgeschichte/projekte_forschung/textilien-lengberg/index.html.en

It concerns finds by archaeologists, led by Harald Stadler, at the
Castle Lengberg, (Municipality Nikolsdorf, East Tyrol, Austria). In
July 2008 they began to investigate a filled-in vault spandrel, and
notes in an itinerary by Paolo Santonino, indicate that this was done in
1485. The fill used materials such as twigs and straw, but also worked
wood, leather (mainly shoes) and textile rags (old clothes).
Radio-carbon dating has since proven the date of the fill.

Some of the clothing rags still have needle-lace decoration. The web
page suggests that the earliest needle-lace might have come not from
Italy but from Germany - even East Tyrol.

Lacemakers in the U.K. may have seen recent newspaper articles, writing
very inaccurately about the discovery of lacy bras and panties, which
are also among the Castle Lengberg finds:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2174568/Found-castle-vault-scraps-lace-lingerie-rage-500-years-ago.html

I understand that these follow the publication of an article in the BBC
History magazine for August, (I haven't yet seen it myself), by Beatrix
Nutz, another of the archaeologists who has been working on the finds.
If anyone is interested, I can provide some more information about
these, but I don't think any lace is involved.

Linda Walton,
(in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, U.K., where it didn't rain today!).

Fredrick Fawcett had a mechanized one to measure off skeins of linen thread
from a cone. It would automatically count and shut off when it hit the proper
yardage. This was back in (OMG) 1976.

It is intriguing. Could the interpretation be 'lace' as in cording,
connecting two fabrics by means of 'a lace (cord, string etc.)'

[lace-chat] Re: [lace] Anyone ever seen anything like this?

2012-07-20 Thread Agnes Boddington

Ells? I have not heard that one since I was at school.
My mother used to make our clothes and bought her material from a Jewish
family shop, and always went for the person with the longest arms.
El (Dutch) was the measurement from the tip of the pinky to the knobble on
the elbow, so the longer the arms, the more material you got.
