[lace] Doreen Wright
Can anyone confirm that this is the Doreen Wright who was a lacemaker and author, and was the chairman at the time when the English Lace Guild was formed? There was an article in today's Daily Mail newspaper which got me thinking. After a search I found the link below. I met the lady many years ago at a lace day where she was the speaker. http://www.doreensdiary.org.uk/ Diana Smith in Northamptonshire Sent from my iPad - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Doreen Wright
Yes, Diana This book is about Doreen Wright who started the Lace Guild. Her son, Bill, contacted me a year or more ago to ask for information about her visit to South Africa in the early 1980's. I don't know if the book goes as far as her lacemaking activities. Re: [lace] 19thC ladies lace
19th C.? Oh, not even amusing! Are you teasing me, Susan? Has anyone counted how many times I have warned about using old cleaning methods from old print sources on old laces? There are even horrible instructions that involve boiling lace. The soaps were harsh, and harmful residue remained in the fibers. Distilled or de-ionized water was not used, and we know that tap water was quite ugly. My grandmother used to boil all water that would be used for cooking or consumption, but even that would not counteract dangers in water delivered via old pipes - remember the documented cause of illness and death of some British monarchs - from lead! All the old washing recipes were before anyone knew the terrible long-term effects, and before professional lace conservators existed.. Please, let us not even plant old instructions in today's over-stimulated brains. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 9/19/2012 2:51:57 P.M. Jeri, how true, I can underline every sentence from you with both hands. Me too has several times warned to read those old books with precaution you find so many things in we should not do today. Re: [lace] Doreen Wright
That website states The diaries cover the period of May 1940 to December 1942 I'm pretty sure that her lacemaking didn't start until some time later - she told me once that she'd had surgery and was supposed to take thing easy for a while so she learned to make lace and hadn't stopped talking about it since! During the war years I think she was busy with the family's motor garage business, as well as looking after the children. I know Doreen's daughter Mary (Bill's twin) from Lace Guild conventions. Sadly their elder brother Arthur died in 1944 at the age of 8. On 20 Sep 2012, at 14:38, Janis Savage wrote: This book is about Doreen Wright who started the Lace Guild. Nevermind the lace, what an apalling waste of gin. Tonic a slice of lime, please.
