Re: [lace] Teneriffe book

2013-11-07 Thread The Lacebee
Alex,

I would like to say that this book was a lightbulb moment in my lacemaking
career. The lovely, Cynthia, a friend of my mother's had just come back from
Tenerife and was inspired by the lace there. She went up to London and visited
Foyles and returned with a copy of this book. We sat together and poured over
it. Contacted a supplier from the list in the back and she ordered the
equipment she needed and she sewed whilst I interpreted the instructions.

We were so impressed that in craft terms, we had performed brain surgery using
a book.

Two weeks later, I met a lady who was offering to teach bobbin lace and I
joined her group. Disappointed in her speed of teaching, it was Cynthia who
reminded me that we adored your book and encouraged me to go and buy other
lacemaking books to learn from because your book had shown it was possible.

We both still talk about your book with that wistful look normally reserved for
a great love. In fact, when I last saw Cynthia a few months ago I commented
that the book was still in pride of place in her bookshelf.

We all wrote earlier of inspiring teachers and I just anted to say that I feel
very lucky and privileged to be part of Arachne and to be able to tap into the
global teaching pool that it offers. When we relocated the books earlier this
year, my husband asked me to point to which books were by authors I had either
met or knew through Arachne and I was rather proud to point out your books on
my shelf.

We don't say thank you enough in this life or worse still we say thing like 'I
don't know how to say thank you to you for what you have done'

So, Alex, I do know how to say thank you. Thank You

L

Kind Regards

Liz Baker

Hi Arachnids,

May I join in saying a big THANK YOU to all the people who have inspired us
in our lacemaking careers;- teachers/ authors/ friends/ Aarchne members/
lace club members. They have all played their part in making us the
lacemakers we are now.

Happy lacemaking,

A subject I regularly write about. Often!

There are greedy people everywhere. All they need is access to the
internet and a personal computer. They can be thieves and spammers,
because they

are not being regulated properly. Please do not buy from them.

Sharon, I don't know if you can complain to Amazon. I do not do business
with Amazon, because privacy is so valued that I would rather pay more
(for

less books) to a supplier who protects my buying history.

Good sound advice from Jeri as always, and thank you Jeri for the excellent
book reviews you frequently post on Arachne for the benefit of us all. You
certainly contribute more than your fair share!

Many thanks

[lace] re pricey lace books

2013-11-07 Thread Witchy Woman
I had an experience recently on Amazon while looking for a copy of Geometrical
Bucks Point. They had a copy listed for $2,465.00. I sent the seller a message
asking about it. THey said it was a glitch with Amazon and they were trying to
take it off the listings. Exchanged a few more emails with them...they still
haven't been able t take it down even though they no longer have the book.

Had another experience with reticella books with prices in the thousands.
Again it was a problem with Amazon's system...it changed the decimal. They
corrected it and I bought them.

I have also noticed that Amazon' prices can change from day to day. It is not
the seller doing this. It is Amazon.

[lace] Re: pricey lace books--another author's perspective

2013-11-07 Thread Karen Bovard
As a new author, I recently went to Amazon to look up MY book (Fun with Split
Ring Tatting) just to see what I could see.

Keep in mind that this book went into print March 2012 and is constantly
available through amazon for either a list price of $25 or sometimes Amazon has
it 'on sale' for $22.50.  It is ALWAYS available because it is Print-On-Demand
printing/stocking technology.  This means that whenever, someone orders either
one or a hundred (I wish!!!) copies of the book, Amazon, puts in that order and
the book is printed to that orders' demand.  Thus it is always 'in stock'.

With that in mind, just below the brand new price from Amazon, I found:
--several (16) 'new' books offered ranging from $18.94 to $25.00 all with SH
of $3.99.
--7 'used' book ranging from $36.96 to $145.73.

I got a bit kick out my brand new book being offered from $145. It can almost
give an author a big head! BG

My thoughts when I saw that was that if someone is stupid enought to buy a book
'used' for $145 when they could buy it brand new for $22.50, then so be it. I
think that consumers are savvy enough to know that they can shop around and
probably find another deal somewhere. Of course there are the people who have
too much money and not enough sense...then I think that let the entrepreneuring
bookseller make a profit off those people. The way I (the author) see it, I
originally sold that book and made my royalty.

Sincerely,

Thank you Liz. Your email has made my day. I started lacemaking in the early
1960s when lace was as dead as the dodo and have had to do most of my learning
from looking at lace and puzzling over prickings. I see no virtue in
reinventing the wheel and my aim is to write down what I have discovered so
that, hopefully, others will continue on from where I leave off. Knowing that
it works makes all the hard work writing books worth while.

Happy lacemaking

2013-11-07 Thread Bev Walker
Hello Karen and everyone

For the exercise, I looked up your title at amazon-dot-ca to find one
listed Used - Like New $24.51 with this comment: Book is in Fantastic
Condition. Contains remainder mark on bottom outside edge. Some Shelf Wear.
Prompt Service! Sure. POD and it is remaindered.Further, I could buy a new
copy from a listing claiming to be in Florida for $77-something (shipping
$6.49 extra). Hmmm! much smarter to order from Amazon's own listing. Thanks
for explaining it is a print-on-demand, as that also explains the 1 - 2
month shipping time. Free shipping too, if I buy 32 cents' worth or more
Amazon 'stuff' to bring the tally to $25 or more.
A shame I cannot tat any more - the book looks good!

[lace] Lace poppies

2013-11-07 Thread Sue
Hi spiders,
The other day I pinned my lace poppy to my coat in advance of remembrance
sunday and has already been admired by a couple of ladies working in our local
shops.
Just thought I would say thank you again to Janice Blair for her gift of the
pattern so we could make them and I continue to wear it every year as well as
putting money in tins obviously.
I wonder how many others still wear their lace poppy.
