[lace] Lace Guild website update
I've updated The Lace Guild website with the January sale of second-hand books. These are books that have been donated to the The Lace Guild but because the library already has copies, are being sold to raise funds to buy new books. You'll find them at http://www.laceguild.org/suppliers/books.html I've also updated details of Lace Days. http://www.laceguild.org/events/laceDays.html Jean in Glasgow where it looks like another wet day - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Looking through
a bunch of my older Lace magazines yesterday and being they are not recent issues...it was like looking at a new issue of Lace . LOL. I had forgotten alot of stuff that was in the older issues. Like I saw the picture of the Binche Thistle again I was inquiring about last week...and I saw where fellow lacer Diana Blackburn made Miss Channer's Lace Mat and was the winner of the Val Gurney Trophy award. She did a small article how that that mat came to fruitation. There were alot of great patterns and alot of great articles. I also found it sad to read how many lacers have died and the stories of their lives. There seems to be so many lacers have gone on to Lace Heaven. I hope there are many younger lacers that have taken their place to carry on the knowledge of how to make lace and how rewarding a finish piece of lace can feel. I love the feel of touching my own finished lace pieces. So light and delicate they are...and they make my eyes smile at the beauty. Take out your old issue of your different lace magazines and see if you get lost like I did yesterday in LacingLand. [lace] Mrs Bury (Fanny) Palliser's Australia Connection
For those who are saving history about Mrs. Palliser, 19th C. author of A History of Lace, with her book: In the 2013 Oct/Nov/Dec issue of the OIDFA Bulletin, Carol McFadzean wrote about Port Augusta, South Australia. This city was named after Augusta Sophia Marryat, who was married to Sir Henry Edward Fox Young, first civilian Governor of South Australia. Lady Augusta was a niece of Captain Marryat - Royal Navy and his sister Fanny Marryat, who married Richard Bury Palliser. Carol McFadzean wrote that Mrs. Palliser published 8 books - poetry, travel, mottoes for monuments epitaphs, china colecting, badges war cries. She also translated books from French to English. Her 600 lace samples (used to illustrate A History of Lace) are in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter. Imagine my surprise to turn up more Fanny Palliser information in a 2012 book, Hand Stitch Perspectives by Alice Kettle and Jane McKeating. This is a book of chapters written by 18 contemporary embroidery experts, mostly professors. See my next memo, about the contents of the book. [lace] Book: Hand Stitch Perspectives (Palliser references)
Hand Stitch Perspectives By Alice Kettle and Jane McKeating Bloomsbury Press 2012 ISBN 978-1-40812-341-6 This is a book of chapters written by 18 contemporary embroidery experts, mostly professors connected to the Manchester School of Art, Manchester England. Here, we find background information about Fanny Palliser and other prominent people of her day in the textile realm of embroidery and lace. In the chapter But what can the Museum do to Encourage Embroidery? Museums, collectors and embroidery (pg. 164) the beginnings of the textile collection at the South Kensington Museum (now VA) are described. In 1873, a special loan exhibition of decorative art needlework made before 1800 was presented, initiated by Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Christian, HRH. the Duchess of Teck; Lady Marion Alford, Vicountess Cust; and Victoria Welby (all involved later in the founding of what is now The Royal School of Needlework). Five catalogues were published as a result of the exhibit; the first catalogue by Mrs. Bury Palliser, and four by Alan Summerly Cole (whom we have written about often on Arachne because of his accounts about the lives of lace makers in England and Ireland). In 1876, 160 Greek embroideries were acquired at the recommendation of Mrs. Palliser, one of the museum's art referees. It is thought some of these embroideries may have influenced the development of Ruskin (or Greek) lace. Anyone interested in the VA's Greek embroideries and the collectors who contributed them, may want to read this chapter. It is rich in history. Other leading experts mentioned in this chapter are Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth (Gawthorpe Hall), and Louisa Pesel (Greek embroidery scholar, 1st President of The Embroiderers' Guild in England, and author of several embroidery portfolios), Elsewhere, more is presented about Louisa Pesel (p. 90); Beryl Dean, the foremost 20th C. ecclesiastical embroidery expert (p. 104); and 8 pages about Thérèse de Dillmont (p.138), who married and died one year later. It is said she was replaced by her niece of the same name! So much was vested in the name Thérèse de Dillmont that DMC made every effort to prevent Thérèse (the younger) from marrying! The Encyclopedia of Needlework, first published in the 1890s, was a promotional tool for the needlework products of Dollfus-Mieg Cie, Mulhouse, France. Much of the book is about modern hand embroidery/stitching, so you may prefer borrowing it from your local library. Re: [lace] Pinterest
David was interested in the copyright situation regarding Pinterest and found out the following. 1. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinterest in the section entitled Copyright Content. Pinterest has a notification system which allows copyright holders to request that content be removed from the site. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) safe harbor status of Pinterest has been questioned given that it actively promotes its users to copy to Pinterest, for their perpetual use, any image on the Internet. Pinterest users cannot claim safe harbor status and as such are exposed to possible legal action for pinning copyrighted material. This is consistent with the experience of Laurie Waters in relation to a complaint to Pinterest. Bottom line: If you find something from your site on a Pinterest user's 'board' you make a request to Pinterest to have it removed. The url (for the UK) is: http://uk.about.pinterest.com/copyright/ 2. If you do not want images on your website being 'pinned' you can add a meta tag to each relevant page on your website. This assumes you are able to hand-code your website and don't mind modifying every page. This is described here: https://help.pinterest.com/entries/21063792-Prevent-pinning-from-your-site Hope this helps to clarify things. Many thanks. Springetts don't seem to sell fan patterns any more (or at least, I couldn't spot them on their site. My recollection was that LJ Fountain took over the Springett business, and then closed, and that Roseground took over from them, but I'm not seeing fan patterns on Roseground site either, and I could have mis-remembered!! Re: [lace] IOLI convention - on line
Go to IOLI, then click on Conventions. Click on Conference information. It brings up the class listings. Click on the one you want and you get the description. Across the top of this page are four boxes. The first is the class number. The second is the class name. Click on this name and you get the picture of the item to be made. Click on the teacher's name and you get info about him/her and maybe a picture. Just keep clicking and things and see what comes up.
