[lace] Ethics and the internet
You will know that I am passionate about lace bobbins. I started with the East Midland genre, then moved on to East Devon bobbins and for some years i have been urged to turn my mind to the bobbins of the âEuropeanâ continent. Over the years some people have kindly sent me some bobbins either in reality or in pictures. I have done nothing with them and i am feeling quite guilty about that (I can give you a list of excuses why I have done nothing!... cant we all?) I decided that one way of meeting what might be a start is a web page devoted to the bobbins of other countries. Over the years i have collected various information and pictures from various publications to help me identify the countries from which these bobbins came. I think it is quite a resource... so what is my problem? For a number of countries I have say just one picture that i can legitimately publish but a lot of drawings/pictures that i have collected for my personal use in the process of Continental bobbin identification. Some countries i have a number of legitimate pictures to publish, but not examples of all the bobbins from that country. To be honest, i have no idea where i got the illustrations etc from, but i am guessing that most have come from very old a possibly out of print books or catalogues. (for the most part.) What should i do? I do not think i would ever be sued for what i may publish. I would avoid the sources in the few books in current publication that i know of. Deep down i know the answer, but do not want to acknowledge it for the sake of academia (I hate to tell you but i did my Masters in Ethics oh I should not have told you that!) IF I can get enough people on side that have a reasonable collection of Continental bobbins and who are reasonably knowledgeable about them, I was wondering if we could have a collaborative web page? I would put up a web page of all that i have got (including dubious sourced stuff!) you guys would look at it, see if you have got a real picture you could take and send me of a bobbin that is illustrated from a book source etc, I would then replace the book illustration with your real picture . There seems to be nothing out there that enables bobbin collectors to ID their continental bobbins. I have a private resource that goes a long way to rectifying that (not all the way for sure) Is there a reasonable way i can get that out there for collectors and interested people to use? I need to say that this would be a âpictureâonly resource, there is no way I could write articles about them... I would just be out of my depth completely. Other than for a few rude word i only speak English! What do you think? Maybe there is not need for it? Maybe i should just publish my legit stuff (that would leave a lot of blanks) Over to you. [lace] The Lord Nelson Bobbin.. Arizona Weavers.
Just a note to let you know that Diana Smith and I have just sent an article for possible publication on the Uni of Arizona web site. https://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/lace.html#webdocs It proposes that the Lord Nelson MiB hand carved bobbin that appeared on ebay last year was more than likely to have been made by the Napoleonic PoW imprisoned in England around 1800 to 1816. We will let you know if it accepted by them and when you can then look/download the article. I need to say that this must have been the biggest collaboration between Diana and myself of any article that may have my name on, (!) and raised the greatest discussion between us, but not real disagreements (as we sometime do!) In some ways there is much more we could have discussed in the article; it raises many unknown issues as lace bobbin research has not moved in this direction ever before. How many of our unnamed makers bobbins could be attributed to them? What about the few, but delightful, hand carved bobbins that âmightâ have a tell tale PoW imprint? I have even asked myself about the origin of the scrimshawed ships that make a magnificent contribution to East Devon bobbin decoration. Of course not being a lace maker I wonder if the PoW lace, made so expertly by these prisoners as they had their pillows and bobbins destroyed by the authorities, could be identified? And the Portsmouth area producing lace? I am sure that you will inundate me with information that I am totally unaware of. Great... I need to know. I hope the article gets published and that it will make interesting reading for you. Brian and Diana (I hope my wife and Trevor do not see this!!!) Just kidding! You all know how silly I can be so i just want to add: âOurs is a marriage made on a treadle lathe!â ( I could add about 200 years ago!) What stone or precious metal would that entitle us to? That is enough nonsense... Bye - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. Re: [lace] Janice Blair's Poppy
Thank you so much Janice for putting the poppy design up, there is a project here in Australia to make poppies in commemoration of 100 years since the terrible times at Gallipolli during WWI. As I don't knit or crochet this will be a way for me to honour my predeceasers with a handmade poppy. Re: [lace] A poppy story
David that was a fascinating presentation by your sister Christine. She is quite a storyteller. Congratulations to her for a job very well done indeed. Are there any other videos of her telling of your grandfather's life? Re: [lace] lace maker photos
Thank you for those, I now know that a picture on my work room wall that I bought at a car boot sale a few years ago is by Miles Birket Foster it's the one with woman and child outside the cottage, I had tried to find out who painted it to no avail.
