Hi Liz and Spiders,

That reminds me of a time when someone was complaining that the Lace Day didn't
have the suppliers she wanted.   'Well - I'll nominate you for the Committee,
and then you;'ll have an input and, if you become the Events person, you can do
it all yourself.'     Same reaction as yours - not another word spoken, and no
new member on the Committee!

I upset someone, very early on in the Guild (1980's) who was complaining
there was nothing much in the new magazine- I asked if she had contributed
anything?. What?!!!  That was Far beneath her, by her haughty response!!!
Contributing to magazines was for the lower class of lacemakers, obviously.

[lace] Volunteering - For Discussion

2014-08-18 Thread Jeriames
I've changed the subject to Volunteering, so it will be properly filed in
our archives..

Yes, how many times have a very few of us been brave enough to comment on
this?

Writing and researching is NOT something I had done professionally for 25
years, when I started to communicate on Arachne about conservation and
restoration and about books and researching. I think it has gotten easier
with
time, though I detest typing and actually failed it in high school!

Local guilds have been given permission to reprint what I write on
Arachne. However, I am not so willing to write for major guilds, because most
volunteer editors have much less knowledge at this point, and one experience
of over-editing was very upsetting. I know it is difficult to convince
someone to be an editor of the larger bulletins, but I usually have reasons
for
including content beyond what someone else would do. If something is too
long, I want to be the one to decide what to edit out. And, I want to know
there are qualified proofreaders.

Here are some volunteer possibilities - researching, writing, editing,
proofreading - from what is written above. There are many more roles to fill,
so something to suit everyone's abilities.

RE: [lace] About Jeri's Posts

2014-08-18 Thread Jill Hawkins
In my experience, life frequently follows the 80/20 rule, where 80% of the
work is done by 20% of the people, and the same seems to apply to Arachne.
There are prolific contributors, and some who lurk and never post, and
others who post from time to time when there is something they feel they can
comment on. All members of any group should be made to feel they have equal
worth, regardless of what contribution they make.

It is unfortunate that a specific lace group was mentioned by Jeri. I am
friends with many of the members of that group, and most of them will not
post on Arachne because they feel that they are not as erudite as some of
those who regularly post. If their personal opinion is that they have
nothing worthy to say, then why should they write? I wonder how many
other Arachne members might feel the same way? I do not comment on Jeri's
posts - even though it is clear that they are very thoroughly researched.
They are most likely of great interest to some members, but I skim them
because I am usually only casually interested in reading about a topic in
such detail.

Being a very active volunteer in many groups, I have given up expecting
thanks or even an acknowledgement of my contribution. That goes with the
territory, I'm afraid. Sometimes I get down-hearted, but for the most part
I enjoy what I do and am pleased when I hear that others also enjoy it. I
admit that getting a 'thank you' once in a while is very gratifying, but it
is not my motivation.

On second thought, rogue-ish could well be the desired effect :p

Even so, sometimes that is the effect one wants (asymmetric, not rogue-ish).

[lace] IOLI Convention

2014-08-18 Thread Valhalla Bee Farm
Good afternoon all -

This was my third year attending convention. Once you go you will always want
to go!

I live in Lincoln, NE USA and I traveled to Sacramento, CA on Amtrak. It was a
long
trip but I enjoyed it thoroughly. I downloaded some audio books from the
library onto
my iPad so I could listen while I rode - tatted some, cross-stitched some,
stared out
the window lots just enjoying the scenery.

My morning class was Bruges with Elizabeth Peterson. I learned an amazing
amount
of new things. Was able to finish a flower motif by Wednesday afternoon only
because
Elizabeth was kind enough to open her room that afternoon for anyone who needed
help.
I really wanted to get it done so I could start a new piece. And that I did on
Thursday
morning - the trefoil - used a pale green DMC sz 80 tatting thread. There were
12 in the
class and everyone was doing different patterns. Elizabeth was wonderful about
getting
around to everyone. In fact, the whole group was great! I hope I can finish
the trefoil
and start another flower before I forget what I learned. Did lots of videoing
on my iPad
which should help a lot.

In the afternoon, I took the tatting class with Randy and Gary Houtz. What
fun! I met them
quite a few years ago but hadn’t taken a class from them. There were 14 in
that class.
We learned a different technique every day. Finished each motif on my return
home trip
on the train. Once again, they make sure they get to everyone so you can learn
lots.

I’m always in awe at the Teacher’s Display night. That would be my dream - to
be able
to make most of those laces and do them well. (There are some techniques that
I am
not as fond of as others, but, boy, do I appreciate the work!)

The War Lace presentation given by Karen Thompson was so very interesting.
The lace collection belonging to Lia Baumister was awesome.
How could you not get enthused after seeing such wonderful things for a week!?!

And the vendor room - as always - had so many tempting things - and I did bring
home a good number - books, bobbins, a new commemorative cover cloth.

Now I am home - running the shop - selling needlework supplies - having guild
meetings. Not as much time to do what I want to do. But every minute I can
make lace, I’m happy.

Hope to see some of you next year in Coralville. I know I have already made
plans to attend.

Pennsic is on my bucket list. Pennsic has been on my bucket list for
20 some odd years, even when I had utterly no affiliation with the
SCA. Now I've been sucked in.

I'm envious of your 10 days in the Middle Ages. Someday!

Heather -- who just returned from 4 days of a gaming convention, so
can't be /too/ envious. :)

Can we get an explanation of the Pennsic Wars.  Where was it held, what did
you wear, was lace involved?  Doubt that but maybe you can enlighten us.
Sounds like a lot of folk involved.  Was it muddy or did you get good
weather?
