[lace] Fraud alert
Sorry to use Arachne for this, but I thought it was important to let everyone know that there is a scam out today, informing people that their Wells Fargo account has been compromised and directing people to take action. I do not have a Wells Fargo account, so I know this is a scam. But if you DO have an account with them, do not do as the email instructs, but contact your bank directly tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving! Re: [lace] Saint Catherine's Day, Thanksgiving Day
Thank you, Susan, for adding to our lace knowledge. On Saint Catherine's Day there is a saying: La Sainte Catherine, tout bois prend racine (On St Catherine's day, every bit of wood puts down roots) so we plant trees or woody plants on the 25th November. The tradition was that girls still unmarried at the age of 25 wore a hat they had made themselves for the feastday of Saint Catherine. The colours were yellow and green, and the style extravagant... Sue from Montélimar Today, the 4th Thursday in November, is a national holiday of Thanksgiving in the U.S. Many American lacemakers are busy cooking and baking for a family feast. Or, if alone, perhaps making lace or curled up with a good lace-related book (which I plan to do).. Our holidays have become horridly commercial, meaning anyone who works in sales will be at work today because stores must compete. Nearly every shopper is connected to a hand-held electronic device, and holidays have become a marketing circus of comparison shopping and mob scenes. Maine, my state, retains some sensibility by having a law that stores over a certain size may not open on this day. For stress-free shopping, I like to recommend antique stores, which offer one-of-a-kind things useful or fanciful - made in your country. What a lovely surprise! Following up on Bev's recent announcement regarding Halas lace, I opened the Lace app to see about downloading the update. Imagine my delight to find it already there!! Thanks to David Jean for providing the service Bev for detecting the update. [lace] Darning: was: Simple needlelace question
On 11/22/14 12:50 PM, lacel...@frontier.com wrote: . . . . That might be one reason the stitch was developed that works across the row, then returns with a straight line back to the start, then the next row of stitches overlaps the straight row. It makes a more solid fill stitch and all the stitches are alike. This would soothe the soul of the person who has to have everything lined up neatly. However, by the time an area is worked over and back until filled, then threads all blend together and the very slight difference between the two directional stitches is not noticed. When I'm working needle lace on the heel of a stocking, stranding back makes the work go faster because stitches with yarn inside take up more space, and because I'm always working in my favored direction. It makes the darn less elastic, so I don't use it except for plumping up thin middles etc. I do work over any stabilizing yarns I've thrown across the hole. Sometimes I'll weave guide threads that are unsecured on both ends, so that they can pull back inside the stitches when the stocking is stretched, across a weak place. These are usually silk to promote slippage, so they make little difference to the size of the stitches, but they make it a lot easier to keep the rows straight and avoid puckering. -- Joy Beeson http://joybeeson.home.comcast.net/ http://roughsewing.home.comcast.net/ west of Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A. where the lake-effect snow didn't stick. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
