I think you mean Alan Cole? He also did reports on the midlands lace
industry.

There was a nice little museum at Budleigh Salterton - Fairlynch. I believe it
is still there but I'm not sure about lace displays. Also Sidmouth.

 Regarding Exeter museum.

My contacts with them via email have been less than encouraging. They have
a fine box of bobbins that I was trying to gain access to. I just got
negative replies and finally no response to my requests. This surprises me
as other branches of the V and A have a policy of meeting email requests and
providing images within a certain time frame.
Exeter too wants a lot of money to reproduce any of their images even in
academic publications or the web and “no financial reward”
publications.

The Met museum in the USA has a policy of any images they have can be used
for educational purposes without cost and (a big surprise) it is the author
that makes the decision as to the purpose of the use of the image. Of
course if there is payment for the article then the museum will want its
fee. Incidentally they worked very closely and helpfully at the
misidentified bobbin (knitting sheath) in one of Whiting's books. They are
favourite, but... Exeter... not at all happy.

When we went across to Exeter from Dorset to hunt for my husbands family
history the first person we found was a g g grandmother I think, we found
that she was a lace maker at the time of their marriage as was her sister
and then later her daughters. They lived in a village called Colyton
Raleigh (I am not sure how it is spelt now). We hoped we might find out
details of the sort of lace she might have made but of course we never found
any information about that. It was a lovely connection and yes we enjoyed
the countryside around there.

Loved your story:-)

[lace] South Devon/Colyton

According to the Devon Lace Teachers website there was a lace called
Colyton Chromatic, a colored lace. There is a photo of Colyton Chromatic on
their website:

Wouldn't it be interesting if your ancestors made this unusual lace.
According to the website, a piece was entered for the Great Exhibition of 1851
and there is an example of Colyton Chromatic at the Victoria and Albert.

Dear Brian,
Was it Take the Children, The Life of the Lace Girls Working in Honiton and
the East Midlands Districts, from Evidence Given to John Edward White,
M.A. for the 1862 Royal Commission, published by Alan Brown. I had forgotten
about this book. I must reread it!
Your trip sounds delightful. Maybe it is Beer or Sidmouth, rather than
Ottery St. Mary that I should go to for local color.
I am totally confused about the Royal Albert Memorial Museum of Art in
Exeter. Speaking from the stand point of a total outsider, it sounds as though
it might not be a branch of the VA, since the name is different. I don't
find it odd that someone as influential as Prince Albert might be honored
with two museums.
I, too, was surprised to read the terms of the Open Access for Scholarly
Content initiative. Wow! The Met leads the way once again! I hope other
museums will follow their lead. Here are the details for those who are
interested

[lace] RE: Exeter Museum

2015-04-09 Thread Maureen
I have not been to Exeter Museum but our local lace group had a talk by
Carol McFadzean who has connections with the museum.I suspect that, like
a lot of museums in this country, lace is being put into storage rather than
being readily available. I would suggest that once you have decided which
museum you want to visit you contact them and see what they have exhibited
and whether they have any lace in the 'backroom' which you could look at.
I did that with Allhallows Museum in Honiton a few years ago and spent a few
hours studying lace which was not on display.

[lace] Wedding dress message?

2015-04-09 Thread Sue Babbs
I have a recollection of someone writing in the last couple of years about a
wedding dress she had made for a young neighbor. She made lace for the
bodice, which may have been tape lace. I think the person was in North
America, possibly Eastern United States.

I have searched the archives for “wedding dress” and “wedding” but not
been able to find the email thread.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, please?
