Re: [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
I have only just seen the request for info from South Africa re Father's day. Maybe it was on a missing message! Father's day in on June 21st - 3rd Sunday in June - and it is freezing, so no making lace outdoors at the moment. Mother'a Day was May 10th, 2nd Sunday in May. We demonstrate when and where we are invited to. As for an International lacemaking day, Spring and Augumn would definitely be preferred, when it is neither too hot or too cold. Janis Savage from Honeydew, Johannesburg Arachne is an international group. My messages of June 15 and 16 have acknowledged that there are 365 days in a year, and that any specific date will be shared by other special events in some nations where lacemakers are located. In consideration of lacemakers everywhere, we also need to think about those in other climates when establishing a date to which we append the word International, and so Spring or Fall may be best. I asked for feedback from those in Australia and South Africa, but none has come, -- Janis Savage t/a The Lace Place, P O Box 2126, Honeydew, 2040, South Africa www.thelaceplace.co.za blog: a lacemakers blog - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
Making lace in public can take place in libraries, malls, parks, or anywhere a table and chair can be set up comfortably for the lace maker. I'm not sure scheduling a specific day is as important as the fact we want to share the experience and make others aware of the art of making lace. I thought the point was to get as many people making lace in public near or around the same time as possible to spread the word worldwide. It wouldn't matter which day was chosen, it wouldn't be suitable for everyone. All it takes is one or more people getting out and doing it. It's kind of like yarn bombing. It gets attention. [lace] EGA Online Courses: Romanian Point Lace Stumpwork
Offered by The Embroiderers' Guild of America; no travel expenses! American lace guilds offer very few needlelace-based classes. Registration deadline is June 24th, for those who might be interested in Romanian Point Lace, a course taught by Sylvia Murariu. Piece is a Guardian Angel. (Wish I had the time; it would be a good addition to my lace angel collection!) Techniques are crochet and needlelace. Registration deadline is July 27th, for second course in the same EGA offering: Stumpwork, taught by Celeste Chalasani. Design is a Pomegranate panel. Eight lessons. Nine weeks. Traditional and Contemporary techniques. Anyone interested may write to me, and I will forward the formal offer, which includes wonderful photographs and contact information on how to enroll. As you all know, artwork cannot be handled on Arachne. I did send a message to Jeri but alas, I haven't seen it yet on this list. My comments were basically the same as Janis' - our temp forecast for 21st June is a max of 14C with rain. [lace] Lace design inspiration
Hello All! As some of you know, I was lucky enough to get a seat in Jane Atkinson's IOLI class in Iowa. In her pre-event notes, she asked us to bring inspirational materials to class. My plan was to take the April issue of Flowers magazine in which there was an article about X-ray floral photography. The accompanying photos are stunning as the underlying structure of the flowers are revealed. Some pictures are black white, others are color manipulated, almost kaleidoscopic. Several artists were featured, notably Hugh Turvey. Then lightening struck! I was just sitting here, minding my own business, when I looked at the icons on my iPad. Being tech challenged, naturally I have no idea what most of them mean or do, but I touched Photo Booth. OMG!!! X-ray, kaleidoscope thermal camera reached out to grab me. These are special effects (there are others) that may be applied to any picture I take. A photo of the eaves of my house turned into a white tan geometri! c design. X-ray thermal photos of plant materials resulted in Turvey-esque pictures. So what started out as an inspirational magazine article is now a power in my own hands. If you who want to do your own thing with form color, you may wish to explore this interesting feature of your Apple device. Having heard Sandi Woods' herring story (for Fishies on Dishies), I just had to share this! I can hardly wait to see what sort of lace develops from this experiment.
