Re: [lace] Question
I was in Bruges last October, and can confirm what Achim says. The Kantcentrum and its museum have indeed moved, because the owners of the property, in which it used to be, wanted to sell the building. The new centre is modern, light and friendly, and the museum is excellent. There is modern and old lace on show, interactive displays, a film of the history of lace, displays of pillows and other equipment. We were a group of twenty, and most, if not all, visited the museum and I think all agreed that it was excellent, and that the displays interested both lace makers and tourists alike. Our tutor was Anne-Marie Verbeke, who was very interested to know what we thought of the new museum, if we visited it. We were able to reassure her that it was really good! Also, it is still possible to visit the classes In the centre, and watch lace being made, if you are there at the right time. The shop in Baalstraat, (opposite the Kantcentrum,) which is called t'Apostielente, is full of genuine hand made lace for sale, both modern and antique, at, as Achim says, reasonable prices. It also has a full range of lacemaking supplies. There are one or two shops in the centre of Bruges which sell genuine hand made lace, with certificates of authenticity. I can't remember their names at the moment, but maybe someone else can. [lace] Printing out patterns
Dear All Brenda has noted what can be a problem. Could I ask those producing patterns to be printed out somehow or other to include a scale, just a line marked with a cm or inch (or both) so that we can check if all is well, or adjust if necessary. I attended a workshop given by Cathy Barley, the pattern being sent by e mail attachment, which I duly printed out, and thought - I know she produces beautiful fine work, but surely not this fine, so had another copy sent, with a scale...she does!! But there seriously can be problems with this, and I have seen people caught out by the 95 or 100 pc being considered full size by Adobe and others. leonard...@yahoo.com Date: Mon, 6 Jul 2015 10:13:45 +0100 From: Brenda Paternoster paternos...@appleshack.com Subject: Re: [lace] out of date books Hi Achim .. Re the size of .pdf files - it doesnââ¬â¢t matter what size the computer screen shows (an iPad/tablet will never show a full A4 page) itââ¬â¢s the printed size that matters and again not everyone is computer savvy enough to check whether they are printing at 100% or something like 95% to fit onto the paper they are using. Then there is the problem of A4 versus USA letter size. .. Re: [lace] Question
Hello Dee, the Kantcentrum is still existing - it just moved. I assume it’s bigger than before, but I couldn’t visit it yet since when I was there on our way back to Berlin from the Normandy we were too late (it closes at 17:00). The new address is Balstraat 16. On the other side of the street is the museum shop - very small but crammed with lace. All hand made for reasonable prices. Well, if 140.000 € for a genuine Chantilly triangular shawl is reasonable, but I guess it is. The shops in the town centre are just tourist traps with mostly machine made lace. Best, Achim. Re: [lace] printing out patterns
Even the page orientation settings can affect the size of the printout! Organising workshops a few years ago, I was sent a file to print for students. The tutor's printer was set to use landscape paper. She assumed that was normal for everyone. However my settings use portrait by default. Printing the file out using the portrait sitting substantially reduced the size of the printout and we only discovered it when a student who had taken part in the previous workshop alerted us. Re: [lace] Re: [lace] Question
I was so fortunate to attend one of Anne-Marie's summer courses a number of years ago. I would love to be able to do that again, but sadly, I know that this won't happen. Anne Marie has announced that she is retiring from teaching. A number of her students, including Anny Noben-Slegers, are also sharply cutting the distances they travel to teach. One of the group, Kumiko, is taking on the role of traveling and teaching, as she is younger. I look forward to meeting her and working with her. [lace] printing out patterns
When you download a pdf file with a pattern from a website and print it right away it can differ from the real size. That is the reason I give the measurements at the Every weeks endings now underneath the pattern. To be sure you get the correct size, you have to save it on your computer and print it from that document. I noticed this because one of my students made one of the first Schneeberg laces and she complained that the thread mention was too thick for the pattern. But the printed pattern was smaller than it should be. [lace] Scale
Hi Arachnids There are many reasons for emailed prickings to end up the wrong size. Sometimes it is the computer setting, sometimes the printer setting. I use two different printers set to print 100%, one reduces the pattern slightly, the other enlarges it. After experimenting I worked out how to adjust back to the correct size, you have to get to know your equipment. When I email prickings I include a 10cm (4 inch line). This is more accurate than a one centimetre line as any inaccuracy will be be greatly reduced. Re: [lace] printing out patterns
And also, you should check the setting of your printer. You have to keep the scale at 100%, and not fit to page. Sometimes you have to enter your printers settings to see what the default values are. Every printer is a mystery and different form the other! Good luck!
