[lace] Wearing and Caring for Lace

2016-08-01 Thread cec
A recent post about wearing lace got me to thinking. I have a lace
stole I have worn several times and now has some soiling near the center
back from my neck. What is the best way to launder it. I have heard
and read many recommendations but would like to hear from someone who
cleans the lace they wear regularly.

[lace] Wearing Lace

2016-08-01 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
I am with you, Jeri, -- Wear lace -- Lots of it!!! As often as possible!!

I do whenever I can - like at Lace Days!

Many years ago, at one of our Lace Days I said my usual "Hello" to the late
(and greatly missed) Gabrielle Pond. She paused, looked me up and down, -
and then replied "Oh! I did not recognise you - you are not wearing any
lace"!!
Well, ..!! (It was said with a smile, though!)

Next Lace Day I wore Lots of lace -- and when I spoke to her, again I got
the up and down look, and then "Oh! I recognise you today, Hello"!! Said
with a Very Big smile!!!
She was such a lovely lady, and her knowledge of lace was massive, but she
was so generous with sharing her knowledge, too. It was a treat to sit near
her, and listen to her talking about some lace subject or other.

Moral -- Wear lots of Lace - and be noticed!! :)

After all, you have taken many hours to make beautiful lace, -- so go out
and Flaunt it :)

Regards from Liz in bitterly cold Melbourne, Oz.

Good idea, Helene!

But it says "designed in Hudson, Ohio Exclusively for Jo-Ann fabric and

And just out of curiosity I scanned the Holiday fabrics on Jo-Ann's
website, and this design does not appear.

If someone who has already purchased the fabric could check for this

I, too went to JoAnn's, but especially to look for the fabric. I found it.

it without asking a saleslady. It was in the Halloween cotton fabrics. Bought
two yards. Lace and spiders.

2016-08-01 Thread Regina Haring
Greetings, all -

Since I needed to go to JoAnn's anyway (the nearest is in Paramus, NJ) the
discussion about the paisley and spider fabric prompted me to go this
morning.

The bolt was already almost empty! I bought 2.5 yds, and while the regular
price was $9.99/yd there is a 30% off sale. What you can't tell from the
picture of the design in the download is the background color used for the
fabric, which is a warm light tannish color, making it a very attractive
fabric, even if like me you don't like spiders!

It will make a great looking pillow bag.

Re: [lace] Lace as Art

2016-08-01 Thread Devon Thein
Dear Phil,
Thank you for the suggestion of Vicky Taylor. I was unaware of her work,
but it is quite interesting. I am familiar with the Love Lace competition
and have the catalog which I am using for a reference. As you say, it has
the broadest interpretation of lace in it. While Love Lace was a great
exhibit, the exhibit that I envision for my proposal is one in which the
works are contemporary and non-traditional looking works of art but are
made using bobbin or needle lace technique. This is a somewhat different
focus than previous shows. I am grateful to those people who have suggested
artists to me. For instance, I was unfamiliar with the work of Experikant,
Many thanks,

Re: [lace] A Maltese Book Lace Quotation

2016-08-01 Thread sueat
Most of the lace I am making these days are either useable as a sun catcher
or hanging piece for all year round and I know 3 are already been used in
that way, one has an add on when someone gave my sister a guardian angel and
she attached it to my sun catcher.Other pieces tend to be for use around
the Christmas trees or whatever decorations and I usually find them very
well received and used. A number of my friends and family have now got a
growing collection which gets added to. If I felt they were being got rid
of (unless they had been messed up in some way) and the person didn't like
them much or not using them for that person I would just take them off the
list. I consider them as special gifts, I choose the colours I feel suit
the person best and feel that most have really been appreciated and loved.
For you Janice your pieces are so spectacular I can fully understand why you
want to sell off if you can find a suitable buyer for some of it. Good
luck.

[lace] After I'm gone

2016-08-01 Thread Janice Blair
Arachne Lace is usually quiet at this time of year, but thankfully we had lots
of digests in the last week, even if it was mainly about the survey.  I tried
to generate a digest before the IOLI convention by sending a long chatty post,
but unfortunately I received that digest on Thursday, after the Arachne lunch
on the Monday.  I hope I did not offend anyone with my long post.  Lace Chat
seems to have died as I can't remember the last time I got a reflected
message on Chat.  Maybe I have been kicked off and it is going strong. Let me
know if that is the case.
Anyway, the talk about lace design got me thinking about what will happen to
all my original lace designs I have made for conventions and lace magazines.
At present most are stored in an archival box or are hanging around the
house.  The latest winner at IOLI is hanging on my family room wall.  Not
too many are on show as we downsized and have less wall space.  I wonder what
my kids will do with my stuff once I "pop my clogs" as I used to say in
England.  Is there an outlet to sell my lace pieces somewhere?  I still like
to buy books, bobbins and thread, so if there is a way of financing my
splurges, it would be nice to find it.  Next question is how much would I ask
for an original lace piece?  I have no idea how to go about it.  Do any
other lace designers have outlets for their pieces?  I am not savvy enough to
build a website to sell online.
Any ideas for this new topic while I am still young enough to deal with
it?Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com

Re: [lace] ADMIN: Survey Request - please send privately

2016-08-01 Thread Patricia Runcie
I'm not on the digest form but I found it boring to see replies saying 1B, 2C
or any other combination of numbers and letters. It has always been the
convention that replies to a survey are made direct to the person carrying it
out. Having said that, even if I don't participate in the survey I am usually
interested in seeing the result.

Just think about the Christmas card, bookmark exchanges and such like. Those
wishing to participate always respond directly to the organiser. the rest of
the list finds out who participated either through 'thank you' messages or by
looking at the photographs on Jenny's web page.

Helen and others,

I doubt that the data could be used for nefarious purposes. I also
wouldn't describe Anna's response as "animosity". She says she was
annoyed with the individual responses and that's a legitimate comment.
I don't participate in surveys myself, so I had no interest in the
outcome, whether on-list or off-list.

My objection was to the three digests filled with survey answers. If a
handful of people responded on the list and if their responses were a
couple lines long, I would have no objections. What I was seeing,
however, was 25+ lines per response. Our digests are only 10K. It's
not a lot of fun to scroll through pages of previously seen material.

OTOH, maybe I should stop enforcing the "Trim posts" rule. What do
digest subscribers say? Please reply to me privately, if you have any
thoughts one way or the other.

Thanks,

Avital

[lace] completed lace for reuse

2016-08-01 Thread sueat
Over recent weeks I have become very unhappy about some candle holders I
bought and used several years ago but they have tarnished very badly so have
discarded them but taken out my pieces of lace and stored for safekeeping and
will find another use for those in the future. I used one of the circular
patterns from one of Christine Springettes books. Hers was for a posy holder,
I believe, a torchon piece with fans, spiders and ground stitches so nothing
too challenging but quite fine thread and I am happy with my work.
One thing that really pleased me was I spent some time checking which was the
right and which the wrong side of the lace and struggled to find my joins, so
you can imagine my delight
I think these pieces were made close to our 40th wedding anniversary so almost
8 years ago but I do feel that my lacemaking is slower due to my back, hands
and wrist problems but I get there in the end anyway which is what counts.
