[lace] 2018 Arachne Motif Exchange
Hello Everyone. I would like to thank all those participants in the Arachne exchanges these last years. We had an awesome turnout which just adds to the wonderfulness of Aracheans. Let's let the fun begin again. Motifs can be used all year long so they are cherished with fond memories. This year the schedule will go like this: May 14Sign Ups begins until June 11 June 13Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out September 1All motifs should be in the mail, please Same guidelines apply as the previous bookmark, motif and card exchanges: send in name, snail mail address, email address, how many motifs you wish to make and any geographical preferences to me at *linhud...@gmail.com *. After making your motif(s) please take a picture(s) and email directly to me. If you wonder if your partner was able to send in a photo of their motif to you, just send a photo upon receipt and I will make sure everyone is represented and thank you for your assistance. We will be following up to make sure we get photos of all of them so if you think you will have a problem, just let me know. Thanks. If this is your first time or you are participating for an additional time, I hope you will have lots of fun. Any type of lace and pattern is appropriate. Any skill level is welcome. This is creative license at its best. Don't be shy. This is your time to shine. Thanks and enjoy as much as I plan to. [lace] Lace in Bosnia?
Hello All! Quick question, a friend visited Bosnia last month & said she saw handmade lace. What could she have seen there? Is there a lace tradition in Bosnia that I have not seen discussed here? Many thanks. Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA Sent from my iPad - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Introducing myself
Dear Lace Enthusiasts Hi! My name is Sharon Ghamari-Tabrizi. I am a historian as well as an occasional needlecraft maker. I'm 57 years old. Since I was a girl I wanted to write fiction. I have finally started on a longish bit of fiction. I don't know yet if it is a novella or novel. The main protagonist is called Bobby Hiller, a graduate student who wants to write his PhD thesis (in cultural studies) on lace and lace-making. He has read historical and academic literature, has toyed with a number of different theories and approaches to lace-making. He is not finding anything to anchor in -- he decides to turn close attention to lace-making itself. Many kinds. He applies to and is accepted at a summer internship at the Textile Conservation Laboratory at the Met. I am deliberately locating the story in the *mid-1980s*, *before* the advent of portable laptops, iphones, digital photography, wikipedia and social media. My reason is that I want to stress the exclusivity of a particular sub-culture of collecting and making. In the story, my character visits a wealthy woman who inherited a major lace collection which her grandmother had assembled in the first part of the 20th century. Would lace collections be differently stored in the 1920s and 1930s then in the 1980s? Also: how would the extremely rare items be handled when showing them? Would they be picked up with cotton-gloved hands, or with rubber-tipped tweezers? When being inspected would they be placed onto some kind of special viewing stand or cloth? Would a goose-necked lamp be allowed to shine light on the lace or would this be considered too strong? Devon Thein has graciously extended an invitation to me to join this discussion list. I will probably not be contributing very much, but I am very pleased to listen in on your expert conversations! Yours warmly Sharon Ghamari-Tabrizi - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. [lace] Interesting article-Elena Kanagy-Loux-plain text
I knew I was going to forget to go to the internet gmail site to send the message in plain text, and I did. Here it is in plain text. It is about Elena Kanagy-Loux. The article appears in Bust Magazine. Debbie Stoller, also an Arachne member and Brooklyn Lace Guild member is the editor of Bust and wrote the article. Elena demonstrated yesterday at the Brooklyn Museum as a representative of the Textile Arts Center. She posted a photo on the Brooklyn Lace Guild Instagram account here: https://www.instagram.com/p/BisTNEagMEp/?hl=en&taken-by=brooklynlaceguild The Textile Arts Center is a mission driven, for profit, textile learning center in Brooklyn and Manhattan that has sponsored bobbin lace classes, taught by Elena, and allows us to use the premises for the Brooklyn Lace Guild meetings. For years there were no lace classes in the city because of the problem that there was no place to hold them, and all the people who might teach them were in New Jersey which was a time-consuming and expensive trip. Today Elena is teaching bobbin lace at the Textile Arts Center. Many of the people who take her classes enjoy the Lolita Goth aesthetic. It is the upcoming Friday that the Yale event occurs. Then on Saturday night another Brooklyn Lace Guild meeting. Seriously, things are popping here in the metro area. The lace world is really active. It is hard to report all the things that are going on and also participate in them. Let’s not forget that I am putting on a Contemporary Lace Show opening at the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ, opening Sept. 23, 2018 until Jan. 6, 2019. Re: [lace] interesting article - Elena Kanagy-Loux, Lacemaker
Let's identify the subject so we can look it up in our archives. This is about Elena Kanagy-Loux, an Arachne member. Yesterday, she was teaching and demonstrating lace making at the British Art Museum, Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Hope we will hear from her or Devon about it.  Don't know why, but I was unable to print for my permanent paper files.   Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center - In a message dated 5/13/2018 2:39:38 AM Eastern Standard Time, jac...@southworth.me.uk writes:  http://bust.com/style/194476-this-textile-artist-is-giving-new-life-to-tradit ional-lacemaking.html Jacqui, Fleetwood, Lancs, UK. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
