One other tidbit of information: When I demonstrate bobbin lace making, most
of the men stand around waiting for their female companions to go on, but every
once in a while one of the men gets all excited as I'm explaining the logic of
the lace and it "clicks" for them. Those men are nearly always engineers.

[lace] Duchess of sussex wedding veil

2018-05-22 Thread Susan
Thank you for further clarification on veil construction Tess! That’s not good
news for the couturier industry. I was under the impression that LeSage moved
production to India where skilled hand embroidery could be produced at a much
lower cost, hence my speculation that they could have been involved. Makes me
wonder how much more can actually be saved by doing appliqué on tulle? That’s
really fiddly & involves lots of snipping & embroidery unless they used water
soluble stabilizer. Oy! Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA

[lace] 2018 Arachne Motif Exchange

2018-05-22 Thread Lin Hudren
Hello Everyone.

I would like to thank all those participants in the Arachne exchanges these
last years. We had an awesome turnout which just adds to the wonderfulness
of Aracheans. Let's let the fun begin again. Motifs can be used all year
long so they are cherished with fond memories. You can hang them, mount
them in a bangle or frame or just enjoy them as an ornament or even a
bookmark.

This year the schedule will go like this:

May 14Sign Ups begins until June 11

June 13Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

September 1All motifs should be in the mail, please

Same guidelines apply as the previous bookmark, motif and card exchanges:
send in name, snail mail address, email address, how many motifs you wish
to make and any geographical preferences to me at *linhud...@gmail.com
*. After making your motif(s) please take a
picture(s) and email directly to me. If you wonder if your partner was
able to send in a photo of their motif to you, just send a photo upon
receipt and I will make sure everyone is represented and thank you for your
assistance. I will be following up to make sure we get photos of all of
them so if you think you will have a problem, just let me know. Thanks.

If this is your first time or you are participating for an additional time,
I hope you will have lots of fun. Any type of lace and pattern is
appropriate. Any skill level is welcome. This is creative license at its
best. Don't be shy. This is your time to shine.

Thanks and enjoy as much as I plan to.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

[lace] were there any actual accounts of hand-lace makers who rose up against the lace-making manufacturing machiens

I am right now immersed in reading victorian labor histories of the fate of
female dressmakers, milliners, and lace-runners. (In the middle of
Charlotte Elizabeth [Tonna's] 1943 book, The wrongs of woman)

I'm also reading in tandem Jade Halbert's 2014 article, "Liberating the
Slaves of the Needle: The Association for the Aid and Benefit of
Dressmakers and Milliners 1843-1863"

There were excruciating starving times for needlewomen and sweated
piece-work workers (called "slop workers"). BUT I am curious about
Lorelei's suggested link between handmade lace workers and
lace-manufacturers.

I'm going to spend the afternoon poking around google books to see what I
can make of it.
I'll let you know what I discover...

Re: [lace] wonderful resource-machine lacemaking

2018-05-22 Thread N.A. Neff
Lorelei,

Hey! "...clever boys..."? Some of us clever girls have been involved, and
more seriously, computer scientists of both genders have worried about
consequences. I think that we best honor the lacemakers who were displaced
by lacemaking machines by preserving in collections the gorgeous lace they
made, studying and displaying that lace, continuing to do and teach
lacemaking, and noting just how far short the best machine-made lace falls
when compared with the best handmade lace. At the same time, we shouldn't
let nostalgia overcome us: lacemaking was sweatshop work. The ones who made
the money, per usual, were the managers and owners, i.e. the lace dealers.
The world seems to me a better place for lacemaking now being a nonprofit
craft or hobby. Robots and AI are already taking over dangerous jobs such
as bomb disposal or mine-clearing, as well as dirty and somewhat dangerous
factory jobs in manufacturing. We just have to work towards equipping
displaced workers to perform other meaningful work. Now I grant you that
society isn't moving fast enough on that, just as it didn't at the start of
the industrial revolution...

Subject: [lace] Difficult laces

To ask what is the most difficult lace is like asking what is the most
difficult school subject. It is subjective (sorry!) and dependent on many
factors, only some of which are related to the innate abilities of the
individual.

It is important to remember that lacemakers didn’t dart about the world’s
offerings or even tackle multiple patterns. They learnt young and made their
lace as they were taught. Nobody told them their type of lace was easy or
difficult just how to make it. This was true for Honiton, Beds, Bucks Point
and presumably all the European types as well. If they developed a true talent
then they may have worked on more complex patterns. Their focus though was to
be able to sell their products to help their families.

This is a long-winded way of saying that, IMHO, there is no definitive answer
to the question of which is the most difficult type of lace. In the same way
there is no one favourite type.

Hi Sherry,

I've created an album called "Neff, Nancy" in Flickr (link below), and put
five photos of the collar in there so any others on Arachne who might be
interested can see them too.

No, I took a class with someone but I don't think her name was Mary
Shields. I have dreams of doing my own Carrickmacross Art Nouveau
designs--the technique seems perfect to me for that style, but I'm so deep
into bobbin lace that I may never surface again! Meanwhile, I'm planning to
frame this one just so I can look at it.

I'll also pictures of a fan that is less classic Art Nouveau but still very
naturalistic.

[lace] Wedding veil

2018-05-22 Thread Tess Parrish
This from my lacemaking friend who tats and does tambour work:
“Actually it was done on a Cornely machine ( like a sewing machine that only
does chain stitch). Then the pieces were cut out and embroidered on the veil
with additional embroidery stitches. “

I guess no professionals do handwork any more whether for embroidery or lace,
and even making a veil for a princess requires a machine. Sigh...

Tess (tess1...@aol.com) still always the amateur with needle or bobbin in
hand.

[lace] wonderful resource-machine lacemaking

2018-05-22 Thread Devon Thein
I have to regard with mixed feelings the fate of these "lacemakers"
who were expelled from France and then encouraged to go to Australia.
These were people who did not sit at the lace pillow plying bobbins,
or making a fabric composed of buttonhole stitches. Instead these are
the people who displaced the people who performed the activity that we
enjoy. Are we not loyal to the memory of the hand lacemakers, the
actual Luddites, who rose up in Nottingham to destroy the lacemaking
