Re: [lace] Flickr account for photos
Hello all, like Susan (and I suppose many more) I wasn’t aware that cost for hosting the pics was carried by a single member. Thank you, Clay. I guess you had first offers of reimbursement and I would add mine to that. I just need to know who is able and willing to collect. If I give five dollars only 19 others need to do so and we financed a whole year on flickr for instance. Sending money to the other end of the world is really no problem with services like paypal existing. BTW: For making single payments paypal can be used without opening an account. I suggest this because while for some the pruning of the archive is a valid idea - and maybe some photos really are put up only to illustrate a current discussion - others cherish the idea of having an archive. And I suggest this because there are people working for flickr and those need to make a living and someone needs to pay for that. Server hosting does generate costs for machines, housing, and electricity, too. Let’s be aware of that and use it conciously. We are many, surely we can pay for a service that serves us well? But as I understood this, this is not the only problem. There is the collecting and billing needing to be handled, and also the work on the account to be done. If there are no volunteers for that, then the only option is for everyone to get their very own flickr accounts (or whatever) and host their own photos - for free - and put up a link to it in their signatures. [lace] Flickr account for photos
Thank you for bringing this to our attention Sue! And thank you Clay—I had no clue you were underwriting our Arachne Flickr to this extent. We have all benefited from your generosity! Before I offer suggestions, what time frame are we working with here? The most obvious thing is to stop the Flickr billing meter to avoid further charges to Clay. To that end, I will edit my album to remove at least 2/3 of my photos. I’m always excited to post pics as I pass personal milestones but I have abused our system by adding pics without removing any! Going forward, I will be sure to make my album more of an rotating exhibit rather than a compendium of past works. If we can collectively get under the threshold of 1000 photos, we will have a bit of breathing room to address our needs. While I am willing to contribute to an Arachne Flickr Fund, there are some obvious logistical issues involved in collecting funds from Arachne members scattered across the globe, each person using local currency! This whole enterprise would be greatly simplified if we can work within the Flickr guidelines for a free account. Re: [lace] Alice Howell hacked?
Oh, that and so much more. Thank goodness we are not all as innocent as we used to be! Instead, we ask questions like: - why is Alice trying to get me to buy a gift card at 5:42 a.m. Pacific time? - Alice has a full life and many friends. Why would she need me to buy a gift card for her? - Even if I did think Alice needed me to buy a gift card, there is no information as to where to have it sent so … how is this going to work, exactly? I can’t figure out exactly how this phishing message was supposed to work, because usually you’d be given a link that would take you to a website that would pretend to sell you a game card while harvesting your credit card information, and that didn’t happen here - there’s no link in the message. Wondering if maybe our ancient major-domo is so old it didn’t process the link? Hmmm. [lace] Yes--I've been hacked-- Alice
Sorry, friends. My computer email was hacked. I am NOT traveling and NOT trying to get money for a nephew. Don't reply to the scam message. Just delete. I'm sorry it went out on the List. Lace-wise, I'm looking forward to meeting David Collier next week. Re: [lace-chat] Urgent Favor...........Alice Howell
Wondering, from those of you more computer-crime-savvy than I am - Usually, these emails would have a link included, and the link would take you to some website that looks like Gamestop (whatever that is) and if you were foolish enough to buy a gift card they would then harvest your name and credit card details. But this message has no link, so I’m wondering - what do they hope to get from it? Does anybody know enough about cyber-crime to tell me? My guess is that Alice’s request for help buying a gift card for her “nephew” is totally bogus, since she (and I) are well beyond the age of having game-playing nephews! Re: [lace] Sri Lankan lace
Gil, I have a couple of narrow lace edgings from Sri Lanka which my mother acquired there probably sometime in the 1970s. I think I also have an illustration of Sri Lankan bobbins and/or lacemakers in one of my older books about lacemaking. I’ll look them out and send you pics and details when I get home.
