[lace] IOLI Convention
We are home, safe and sound, after a Great week in San Antonio, Texas, -- although it was âMighty Hotâ â especially after leaving our very cold Aussie winter!! Thank you, Janice , for again organizing an Arachne Lunch, although a few people missed the announcement of the lunch venue and time. It was fun to meet up with other Arachnids, and meet face-to-face. The friendships made at these Conventions are Wonderful, and it is great to see there is still some good in the world, as all we seem to hear about are the bad things. Lacemakers the world over are such lovely people. Regards from Liz. [lace] IOLI Convention & Magazine
We are gearing up for our trip first to Texas and then on to Seattle to visit family! We get to San Antonio a couple of days early, to give us time to get over Jet-lag, so we will have a look around, Janice, to see if there is room for an Arachne lunch! I have already purchased a small gift to bring! And I have 6 small (4½ inch) fans for the display. They are in 6 different laces! I finished the tatted one recently. I am doing the afternoon Tatting class, so there is not a lot of equipment to bring â I just had to finish a couple of UFOs so I had empty shuttles ready for class!! At least it got me finishing things, rather than starting another UFO (I am good at that!! ð ) We are looking forward to the trip, - and thawing out a bit! It is mid winter over here, and very cold, (after a long very hot summer), and Texas should be nice and warm!! So we are searching out our summer clothes to bring! I, too, prefer the paper version of magazines. I get various Newsletters on the computer, but I hope the Magazines stay with a paper version, which can be pickled up at any time, where as this computer is shared, so I canât always access it, if DH is on it. I have the past magazines in holders here on the shelf, and I can go back to them whenever I want to â easily and without any fuss!! Regards from Liz. [lace] Lace Guild Artefact of the month
I received my Artifact of the month, too., and Yes the new look is good. I saved the main photo, but did not try to save the close-ups, as I had a feeling it would not work!! A pity, though, as they would be good to go back to later on, as enlarging the photo on the computer makes it go fuzzy! Those quilts in the display were Amazing. Thank you for the link, and Jeri, as usual you give excellent advice regarding the preservation of our precious lace! Thank you. Regards from Liz. In cold,. [lace] Broken bobbins
David, - Try John Beswick in Adelaide, and see if he can mend your broken bobbins. He repaired a couple of broken bone, ones Helen & I had, and it was a superb repair. You would never know they had been broken. I highly recommend him, so contact him â âTorchon Houseâ and talk to him about them. I am amazed at that wonderful mural and have enjoyed seeing the detail of the various section. Many thanks for pointing us in the right direction to see it. Gosh! What wonderful handwork is out there â if you know where to look for it! [lace] Machine lace and its manufacture
Quite a few years ago (25 or more!) my daughter Helen and I were demonstrating Lacemaking at a local âCraft Happeningâ, and an elderly gentleman came by, and stopped and had a good look at the lace on display, and watched us working. Then, when we spoke to him, we found out he had come to Australia from Britain, in the 1950s, from Notting ham, as they had sent some lacemaking machines out here, and he was sent with them, to set them up and teach the Aussies how to operate the machines. It was very interesting to hear about it. A few years later, the Guild organized a visit to the Lacemaking factory â where machines were turning out the narrow, edging, lace by the yard, - and they still used the punch card system. Gosh! It was a noisy place! There were other machines â adaptations of the lace machines, I think, that were churning out Knicker elastic â the menâs type with the brand name worked into it! Some wider elastic was for boots & shoes! It was very interesting to see, - but I will stick to the hand made bobbin variety of lace â it is much quieter, - and nicer!!!:) Regards from Liz.
