[lace] Re: woollen lace (long)

2006-01-06 Thread Valda Kemp
practical hints on how to go about it today. It aims
at Torchon-style work using double knitting wool (the
UK term for what I think is called worsted yarn in
the US) and suggests how to make the prickings and at
what scale, and what bobbins and pillows to use or
 improvise.

Worsted weight yarn is thicker than the UK double knitting. In North
America UK double knitting is referred to as sportsweight..

Just my two-bits worth.

[lace] tatting query

2005-12-30 Thread Valda Kemp
Looks to me to be all tatted.

There is a Tatted Bedspread on eBay. I recognize the
rings and picots of normal tatting, but each section
has a wide row of stitches that I don't recognize. It
this all tatted? Or has there been a row of crochet
 added around each section?

Item 8246107778 if the URL doesn't work for you.

 Thanks.
Alice in Oregon -- 2 of rain yesterday, and more
coming. Wish I could send it to Texas/Oklahoma where
the fires are. BIL lost his home to the fires.

Re: [lace] Stool for very little lacemakers on ebay

2003-09-16 Thread Valda Kemp
or they just rested their feet on it with the pillow in their lap ... by
the way , what makes it a lacemaker's stool ? and how can one say it dates
 back to george III ?

 puzzled dominique from paris

I was wondering the same thing. To me it looks like the stools I used to
sit on when I milked the cows, back in my youth. (long long ago)

[lace-chat] Summer Reading

2003-07-17 Thread Valda Kemp
Two of my favourite books for light summer reading are Mama's Bank Account by Kathryn
Forbes, and Mrs. 'Arris goes to Paris, by Paul Gallico. I have read each of them
several times and never get tired of them.

I also love reading biographies of movie stars. At the moment am reading a biography
of Claire Bloom.

And speaking of movie stars my very favourite male stars are Danny Kaye - for his
humour; Jimmy Stewart for his voice and seemingly nonchalant acting, and Sidney
Poitier for his charming looks and excellent acting, I particularly loved him in To
Sir with Love.
