[lace] bookmark received :)

2017-05-22 Thread Debbie Mouzon
Hope you are all doing well.

Today I received my bookmark gift from Lin Hudren. It is pretty amazing
how busy she must be to have sent me 5 bookmarks!

She sent a lovely tatted magnetic bookmark and the most adorable little
hedgehog that you can imagine (we lacemakers are rather partial to our
hedghogs, no?)

A stingray corner book mark, and a leaf stem along with an angel !!

Thank you Lin for the gift! Can't wait to see them all in the website
Jenny puts together!!

Looking forward to doing this again next year!

[lace] pin use question

2014-03-25 Thread Debbie Mouzon
I am afraid I do not post often these days.

I have been making lace since 1983 and this October/November will be 40
years since I first touched a lace bobbin. I learned from some wonderful
women in England and spent the 18 months that I had left in that country in
classes of one sort or another. Lace Days with speakers like Pamela
Nottingham, Santina Levy...lots of incredible opportunities. I have been
making lace or teaching lace ever since.

Except lately. At this time I am going through chemo therapy treatments
for cancer that was discovered at the end of this past summer. Started
chemo the end of October. I have three more treatments left. The drugs
that I am getting right now have caused neuropathy in my fingers and
feet. The pain in the fingertips makes it difficult and even painful to
remove and place pins, etc.

I have never considered the glass headed pins as a possibility, but I am
looking into it now if means that I can keep making lace while the
neuropathy is there. Also, I think patterns with few pin holes might be
the ticket...Any suggestions?

Has anyone else had problems with neuropathy and found other ways to make
lace while dealing with it?

Any advice or info will be greatly appreciated!

[lace] anniversaries, delurking and stuff

2013-03-28 Thread Debbie Mouzon
I am surprised to see that this list is almost 20! Some years back, one of
the members had a list that was the oldest one we could find of Arachne
members, and I was on it. Not sure when I joined, but it was not long
after we had access to America Online (remember? when you paid by the
minute that you were online?)

I have been out of the lace world for awhile now, and am anxious to get
started back. I finally realized if I wait for perfect timing...the things
I have put off will never happen.

So, there is a local lace group and I am about to start going to their
meetings, I have signed up for the bookmark exchange, and I am posting on
Arachne again...whew.

I learned to make lace in 1983 while living in England and went to classes
at the local Tech college every week for over 18 months. I started with
lessons from a sweet lacemaker who had inherited most of her tools from an
older lacemaker who lived with her.

My first lace day in England saw the purchase of a Hornsby lace pillow bag,
and Newnham pillow, a glass bobbin and an antique mother-and-babe with
twins...

I enjoy cross stitching, crocheting (only granny squares), hand-sewing,
smocking and spinning (that is until I found out I was allergic to sheep's
wool...)

Once I started lacemaking, there was enough new things to learn to keep my
mind occupied for the rest of my life! In England, I learned to make
Torchon, Bedfordshire, Bucks Point and Honiton. My favorite by far is
Bucks Point.

When I was starting out, my children were little, and loved to have a go at
my lace pillow. My daughter used to attend demonstrations with me, and I
would set her up with her own pillow. At about 8, she abandoned it. That
is until just recently when after being away from it for about 20+ years,
she sat down and made a beautiful bookmark in Torchon with minimal help
from me!! Also, my daughter-in-law has asked me to help her learn.

Right now, I have a fine Torchon edging on one of my pillows and a church
on the other one. I think i will get back to work on this church and
finish it...it has been much too long!!

Glad to be back...all the discussions on lurking are probably what pulled
me back in again...thank you!

Same here. My computer does not recognize that
symbol. I think it may be because it's Hebrew
enabled. That symbol shows up as a Hebrew letter.
I tried changing it with several different
letters and no go. Apparently, the way Julian set
up that page's name, it will only work with that
symbol. And, he doesn't have it linked on his
main page. At least, I couldn't find it. So, I
went into the archives, and lo and behold, after
waiting many hours for the archives to update,
the URL there shows up with the symbol.

Does the smaller top part, looks like it has a knob at the top,
unscrew? Does the bone/ivory part come out of the wooden casing
completely? It looks like it should come out of it's casing.

Is so then cold it be some kind of sewing kit, holding sewing
needles/reel of thread or something like that? An Etui I think is
the spelling.

Re: [lace] Another eBay thingy

2007-11-11 Thread debbie
Malvary does have a point (pun intended, if you like). The end of the
thingy does look like the yad (hand) that is used to point at the
words in the Torah! I know nothing about the chocolate thingys, so
can't compare. But, the length of the yad is usually not longer than
about 8 and the 2 end of the handle is definitely not something
I've ever seen on a yad. It would actually make it kind of clumsy.

[lace] Raffle for stamps

2007-01-26 Thread debbie
Last month Bev, in Sooke BC, had a raffle for some extra lace type
stamps she had around. I won them and when I wrote to the list that I
received them, I received a lovely email from Eva in Spain, wanting
to know if my stamp collector son would like some of the lace stamps
that she has. I said, sure, why not. Well, in addition to several
stamps from France, Eva generously sent a whole bunch of duplicate
sets (plates? panels?, don't know what they're called) of really
beautiful Spanish lace stamps. You can see them here:
http://harnofonline.com/images/SpanishLaceStamps.jpg

So, I'm offering up some of the duplicates in a raffle. I'll give it
about two weeks, let's say until Sunday, the 4th of February, and
then draw a few names. Just hit reply to this email (the default is
to the sender, but make sure my email address is in the to
field). If you are on digest, please use the same subject line as this email.

Good luck!

Happy Australia Day!

Have a great weekend,

Thanks for asking, Barb!

The weather had been great. Within the past few days the temperature
has been slowly going up until it's now in the 90's just like what
you guys have. In Jerusalem, it's not humid, so it's not so bad. We
do have a/c.

OK, that's not what you asked about

The northern parts of the country (and the very far south, near Gaza)
are the areas being bombarded with rockets and missiles. I'm in
Jerusalem and Avital is in a suburb of Jerusalem, where, so far, it's
been quiet. Here and in most locations in the center of the country
and I imagine in the south, too, we are hosting refugee families from
the northern cities. About 1/2 of the citizens of the north have
gone south, rather than stay cooped up in the bomb shelters.

We have a separate entrance, small guest room. The mother and young
children of a family are staying in a girls dorm in my community, and
the father is staying in our small room. I don't even know what his
name is! We were matched up by one of a number of people that have
volunteered to match up the offers with the seekers.

It happens that he can stay downstairs only for another week, as we
have many guests coming from out of the country for my daughter's
wedding in 2 1/2 weeks.

To keep this needlework related. I am working feverishly on the
chuppah (wedding canopy) for the wedding. I started this several
years ago, intending it to be a family heirloom. I've worked on it on
and off over the years. This will be it's first wedding. When they
got engaged less than three months ago, I estimate it was about
80-90% done. But, it will be down to the wire.

There's no lace on it. I made some crochet lace for it, but decided
against using it. There's some patchwork and appliques, but it's
mostly embroidery and beading, done with silk ribbon and silk
threads. You'll see pictures of it one day, I suppose.

Yes, it's probably legal. The material is older than
1923. It is most likely no longer under copyright.
The cost is very low. You can buy it from her, or you
can search out a copy, scan it into your computer page
by page for yourself. Your cost and time for doing
this would be much more than the $4 price on the email
copy.

When a person gets this long email, it can be saved to
CD if preferred. Since it's not shipped, there would
be no shipping cost.

This is just a modern version of the photocopied books
and articles offered on eBay.

Re: [lace] Question about an Irish Crochet book

2005-11-17 Thread debbie
She's probably talking about this ebook that's free for resale that's been
going around for the past year. Following is just one way that I searched
for it, there are probably a lot more available with a less refined search.

http://search-desc.ebay.com/irish-Crochet-and-How-to-Make-It_W0QQamp;sspagenameZhQ3ahQ3aadvsearchQ3aUSQQcatrefZC5QQfbdZ1QQfclZ3QQflocZ1QQfromZR6QQfrppZ100QQfsclZ1QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfssZ0QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQftsZ2QQnojsprZyQQpfidZ0QQsacatZQ2d1QQsacqyopZgeQQsacurZ0QQsadisZ200QQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ0QQsaslopZ1QQsatitleZQ22irishQ20CrochetQ20andQ20HowQ20toQ20MakeQ20ItQ22QQsofocusZbs

If that link is broken, just put Irish Crochet and How to Make It in the
Ebay item search using 'exact phrase'.

That's it. Must be a big book to have that many patterns! It is supposed to
be available all over the world. Not on any of my lists.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: [lace] Selling on Ebay

2005-09-26 Thread debbie

Brenda,

I buy and sell on Ebay (I've been taking a bit of a break on selling), so I
will give you some of my opinions on your questions, mostly where I differ
from those who have replied already on the list.

At 12:56 PM 09/25/2005 +0100, you wrote:
I realise that I'll need to open a PayPal account, (or restrict it to GBP
cheques and clear the cheques before parting with the goods).
I've resisted PayPal in the past for my own book sales because of the high
charges - it works out at 55p on a single book or 3-07 GBP on a trade
order for ten books.

As a buyer, I don't even bother with auctions that do not take
Paypal. There is rarely anything I need badly enough that I would go
through the trouble of making a non-electronic payment. I could pay with
Bidpay, but that costs me extra, and Paypal is free as a buyer.

Someone on the list mentioned about not accepting credit cards through
Paypal and only opening a non-credit card account. Sometime in August,
they changed the rules and you may not accept Paypal on Ebay without
accepting credit card payments. Therefore, there is no way to avoid the
Paypal charges.

As a seller, I only accept Paypal. Being in Israel, accepting checks or
money orders would be too much of a hassle for me. Not worth the chance of
having more customers or higher bids. Besides, I love seeing the money
immediately, or almost immediately, and I love being able to ship
immediately. Even though my items take about a week to get there, my
buyers often claim fast shipping in the feedback.

1, The minimum reserve price with Ebay is 50 GBP. If I'm realistically
hoping for about 25 GBP for an item then a reserve price is not an
option. Should I therefore set the opening bid at what I consider the
reserve price to be, say 20 GBP? If I set it very low and someone bids
just a penny more am I obliged to sell?

There are experienced sellers on Ebay, with high feedback scores, that
start their auctions very low. They can do that successfully because they
know that the bids will usually rise to what the item is really worth, due
to their reputation. As a low feedback or new seller, you should start
your bids at the lowest price you would be willing to sell at.

2, There are a lot of low value items - would it be better to put these
into 'lots' ie five different lace mats, or try to sell each item
individually? Postage on five is likely to be the same as postage on one,
it's the packaging that costs!

Items that are really only worth $1. or so each should definitely by listed
in lots. Preparing a listing (photos, text, etc.) is time consuming and
the low value items are not worth your time individually. The extra Ebay
charges do add up, too.

3, Most of the items would benefit from laundering to freshen them
up! A mammoth task, so would it harm the dresses if I iron them
unlaundered in order to get a decent photo?

I get the impression that most of the items you are selling are not worth a
lot individually, so, again, I don't think it's worth your time to work too
hard on it. You should state the condition of the item honestly, in the
listing. Yellowing, stains, possibly where they are located, if you think
it's important. And state that it is being sold as is.

Good luck and please let us know your Ebay ID when you do start selling.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/paypal-payments.html?ssPageName=CMDV:AB

There are many people still doing it, doesn't mean it's OK. Many are being
turned in and having their auctions ended. If you state no credit card
paypal in your auction terms, you run the risk of coming across a nasty
buyer or a jealous competitor who will turn you in.

This is incorrect, in my experience. My husband continues to offer stamps on
eBay to collectors, and our payment terms include PayPal with a balance or
bank transfer, no credit cards. Our PayPal account remains a personal
account, no fees to us, and we continue to collect on ebay sales via PayPal.

Re: [lace] Eye candy for lace knitters

2005-08-31 Thread debbie
A few days late with a reply, but I'd like to thank Brenda for showing us
these sites. A lot of beautiful pieces there. One in particular caught my
eye.

On the first page of the Michael Kaprelian site there is a hexagonal shaped
doily that I'd like to get the pattern for (5th from the bottom.) I did a
search and came up with this:
http://melody.virelai.net/blog/c/archives/2005/07/07T152313 I was wondering
if anyone here has the publication referred to and can tell me if the
pattern is in there and possibly any contact info so I can try to find out
if it's available.

I could write to Michael, but there is no email address on his site, only a
guest book. I will use that if I need to.

BTW, as to my interest in that particular doily, I collect hexagonal shaped
items. Buttons, beads, small(trinket) boxes, etc.

Thanks,

Debbie

[lace] Japanese Tatting book

2005-02-03 Thread debbie
The Japanese Tatting book that I won in Steph's drawing has arrived. It
sure is a beautiful book. The photography is great!

I'd love to be able to read the captions and descriptions,
though. Japanese can be translated in Google, but that doesn't help
me. How am I supposed to get those weird characters into google,
LOL! Gotta find someone here in Jerusalem who can read Japanese. Avital??G

Thanks very much, Steph!!
Have a great weekend,

Re: [lace] Japanese tatting book draw winner

2005-01-17 Thread debbie
Woo Hoo! Thanks! I love books and this will be my second book on
tatting. I've done very little tatting, but maybe this will encourage
me. It happens that my first book has been lent out, to Avital, so we know
it's in good hands. Now that I will have another book to lend her, it'll
be a good excuse to see each other, LOL!

Some time ago I bought all the supplies needed to make bobbin lace,
including videos to teach me how. I've only gotten as far as spangling
some bobbins. I WILL get to it one of these days. In the meantime, I am
crocheting some lace fans and edgings. Also, some leaves and flowers in
the Irish Crochet style. I will be using all those pieces in a large, long
term project that I'm working on, mounting them and combining them with
embroidery.

Thanks, Steph. I look forward to receiving the book. I've sent you my
address separately.

I have told many of you that the CDs you get from me cost only what I have
put into my share of the work, supplies, mailing, and so on. The Professor
asks nothing. We both agree that any of you who want to copy them are
absolutely free to do so, but we hope that no one will try to make a profit
from it, as this person is obviously wanting to do.
Shame on her!

Yep. Same stuff as the horse soap. Just costs a lot more when they put it
in a small jar and call it Quilt Soap, or Fabricare, etc.

I did actually find one under the name Fabricare, where the contents were

[lace] Hello from a lurker

2003-08-14 Thread debbie
I joined some time ago and have been lurking, reading the digest. I most
enjoy reading about your current projects and seeing photos of your
work. I am not a lacemaker, but I love reading about it, looking at
pictures, buying and collecting, and using it! I have crocheted (among
other things) since I was a young child and made some pieces of crocheted
lace now and then.

Within the past year I decided that I'd like to learn tatting. About six
months ago I bought a tatting shuttle. I would rather learn shuttle
tatting than needle tatting, as I feel the needle tatting is too much like
crochet. I have seen loads of sites with instructions on tatting, but they
don't do anything for me. I need to see someone actually doing it in
person. Where I am, in Jerusalem, there is not exactly an abundance of
fine needlework teachers around. I'm hoping that Avital might be reading
this and would be able to steer me to someone in the Jerusalem area who
could teach me shuttle tatting.

I have a question. I do a lot of lace watching on ebay. I recently came
across the following two auctions that made me wonder about something. How
can you tell, by looking at photos such as the ones in these auction, if a
lace is handmade or machine made? The seller claims that they are
handmade, but they look just like pieces of lace that I have that are
machine made. At least I'm pretty sure that the ones that I have are
machine made, by the price that I've paid for them!
