If it's more trouble to kill it than to maintain it, eh, it isn't hurting anything, why bother? If it's a toss-up, we should remember that simply having an alternate list, without ever using it, helps prevent flame wars. A flame war transplanted to an alternate venue always turns into a civil discussion. I think that having the alternate available also triggers the "I don't want to be the reason this discussion had to be moved" reaction. -- Joy Beeson http://wlweather.net/PAGEJOY/ west of Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hello Jane and everyone Me, too (still here). We have it in writing, 1995 was the start. There are messages in our own Archive regarding our 20th Anniversary in 2015 https://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/ and Liz Reynolds the list-founder mentions the start in the first sentence at this page: http://www.arachne.com/lace/list_instructions.html *and* I found one of my commemorative bobbins inscribed 6th Anniversary 2001 :) When I figure out how to post to flikr will share its photo. Also my aluminum one from 1998 by Ends 'n' Odds, the lovely Tregallas family. In 1997 the lace list was split in two, one for lace-related topics only, the other for off-topic chatter. [lace] I'm still here after all these years...
I probably shouldn't admit to this in these days of data protection, etc, but back in October 1996 I printed off the Arachne Bios, and put them in a folder, which I've still got! Should I shred them? Martha, your bio is amongst them, so you were definitely a member by then. Checking the old Arachne Handbook (which Patty Dowden updated in 2000), she referred to the third anniversary in April as if it was April 2000, which would make the start year 1997 - possibly getting confused as that was the year Lace separated from Lace-Chat. I'm not sure whether it was actually 1995 or 1996, only that it started on April 12 and I joined in July of the first year, after it was mentioned on uk.rec.crafts.needlework (and I think that may still be going - rec.crafts.needlework was last time I looked, which may be a couple of years ago now, days go so quickly). The reason the list split was, according to the handbook, that in February 1997 Arachne had over 600 members - I know it went! over 1,000 in the days when we could quiz "the major" (as we affectionately called the server!) as to the number of members - Avital, do you know how many members there are now? It is rare for us now to produce the 40 or so messages a day we were getting to then, so I wonder if it's worth still having two separate lists? Probably 1990s. And like Nancy I did not trust online storage. Still don???t in fact...that???s why I keep,so,many backups!
