Re: [lace] lace sample book
Hello Marilyn If its a book from England, that is quite old, there is the little book on point ground by Catherine Channer, first published in 1928, which has very details illustrations. Margaret Maidment also produced one 'Bobbin Lace Work' in the 1930's I think. Also the Eunice Arnolds torchon book for real beginners was probably published in the early 1980's. Just to name a few! Knowing the type of lace would help and also how old is quite old? [lace] Lace sample book
There are Thomas Lester's Bedfordshire samples, samples from Luton museum which are point ground, and so forth. But those don't have pages of directions. The formula of pages of directions and a *picture* of a sample is fairly standard to this day so we'd need a lot more information to track down the specific one you mean. By pages of directions do you mean the old-fashioned way such as in the early DMC books where each pinhole was numbered to match the directions? But I wonder as you specify samples rather than pictures if you'd seen (or heard of) a much rarer book where the instructions are illustrated by pieces of real lace? If so, I don't know what this is. [lace] Lace in book
Hi All, DH has been reading Eldest by Christopher Paolini ISBN 0-375-82670-X It's the second in a series started with Eragon. Anyway, he told me that there is lace in it! He marked the page and I read some of it today. Starting on page 324 Queen Nasuada (formerly Princess) is living in exile after an evil dragon rider has taken over her realm. She accidently cuts the BL on her dress and starts thinking about lace - needle and bobbin! She asks someone (whose name I forgot to write down) if they can use magic to make lace and that person is going to find out. Nasuada thinks they can make lace faster (she goes on for a bit about how L-O-N-G it takes) and the other realms will buy the lace from them. She says Ounce for ounce, lace was worth more than gold or silver. I'm sure we all agree VBG. In this way she hopes to have the other countries pay for the war to get her realm back. I think I've got that all right G. DH started explaining and I think I need to read the books. When Paolini's first book came out I remember reading that he was home schooled. Obviously his teacher gave him a complete education!! Jane in Vermont, USA where the days are warm and the nights are beautifully cool! They gave a web address in the books, but it did not work for me. You could try a publisher search (might work for you), or the e-mail they gave: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ask where these books are available in other nations. I purchased these at the DK booth at OIDFA-Prague. Both are very beautiful, on high-quality glossy paper, in color, and have the patterns. I am using the word patterns, because some are for needlelace and that language term better covers both. Lace Peacocks: Soft Cover, 44 pages, large sheet of patterns inserted in back (loose - no pocket). DK books are often written in chapters by a group (committee?), and this is done in that format by 8 authors. There are many photos of peacocks from various countries, techniques and eras in beginning of the book. For example, one is a Point d'Angleterre from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are 24 new patterns - the way I read it. When I purchased the books, I requested that they write the price inside the covers. This was not done with this book, so I cannot give it to you. Lace Fans: Hard Cover, 160 pages, 39 Euros. Many pages of text in German that everyone would like to be able to read. Lovely pictures of antique fans. Then, the modern -- patterns are printed within the text - sometimes across two pages. From the index, I'd say there are more than 40 patterns (some of which have variations) which have been contributed from many lacemakers. Includes one fan that is called an armbandfacher, which is an elongated triangle. Not sure how effective this is as a fan! The owner wears this fan on her wrist like a bracelet; it has a circular opening for the hand (I might prefer an oval opening for greater comfort). The last fan is a facherbrosche which I interpret to be a brooch - to be worn on the person or in the hair. Many of the modern laces are in color, and are very innovative. There is a teaser-fan, by which I mean I think there is no pattern, by Annelies de Kort - the miniaturist who is active on Arachne. It is titled Ausfuhrung. Sadly, for her, the picture is probably the only one in the book that seems blurred, and I have no idea what the subject is. One other confusion: I could not match the needlelace pattern on page 158 to a picture. Anyone who collects items with a peacock motif or fans would LOVE these books, even if you cannot read them. However, these two books again illustrate **how frustrating it is to not be able to purchase translations** for expensive books!
