Dear Janice, Although it is not all that close to Zurich (55 minutes by car according to googlemaps) there is a lace museum in St. Gallen, Switzerland that has been on my bucket list for some time. It has pieces of hand made lace that were collected by the Ikle family who produced Schiffli lace. The books of the late 19th and early 20th century have many examples from this collection which had some very famous pieces. Some were sold, but some remain. The collection is not online, but there was a Gros Point symposium held in St. Gallen a few years ago and images from a special display were very exciting. [lace] Trip to Europe - lace museums/centers to visit?
Hi all, I'm planning a trip to Europe (with mom) partly to see some of the lace making towns and museums. We will be in London, Belgium, Italy, and Croatia. As for Croatia I know Pag and Hvar are major lace centers - though Pag has a reputation as a party city - and I'm hoping Hvar is a bit quieter. Anyone know? Are there demonstrations or archives there that are accessible? We are certainly visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Are there other museums or smaller collections in any of those countries that you would suggest? I would really love to see some historical examples as well as current lace making. I know it's a very touristy thing to do/see in some of these places, so any advice about how to see the more authentic side of things would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance! Hi There is a Fan Museum in London. It is small and has some beautiful lace fans there. It might be a good idea to see if they will displaying any lace fans when you will be visiting. The display apparently changes quite often. Yes, itâs a nice museum but be aware that itâs not in central London, itâs in Blackheath which is about 8 miles from the centre of London, at least half an hour driving, but could be much more depending on the traffic, or 20+ minutes on the train - remembering that one of the London stations en-route is undergoing massive refurbishment and closures at present so rail travel is also likely to be subject to delays and diversions. I do have the Museum of Costume and lace on my Pinterest board for museums in Belgium and the Netherlands, https://www.pinterest.com/LaceNews/lace-museums-belgium-the-netherlands/, unfortunately I had it located at the Brussels airport so maybe it got missed. I just fixed it. Unfortunately the mapping function recently added to Pinterest isn't all that detailed, and if something isn't included you have to find the closest place. I do now have 13 Pinterest boards with 121 places with lace collection listed on the LaceNews Pinterest site https://www.pinterest.com/LaceNews/ (public and private museums mostly), and more are being added all the time. For each pin I've tried to add a few lines of description of each collection, and am trying to update these as I learn more about each one. Dear Meghann, Having sent you to Laurie's site, I am surprised to see that she didn't include the Museum of Costume and Lace in Brussels. http://www.brusselsmuseums.be/en/museum/76-museum-of-costume--lace-museums- of-the-city-of-brussels The Kantcentrum in Bruges used to have a display. I am not sure what is going on there since it changed hands. The flax museum in Kortrijk near Bruges is very good. There was a small museum over the Rococo lace shop in Bruges. There are occasional lace making demos outside lace shops. Of the Italian museums I recommend the one on Burano, recently redone, if you see no other. Sometimes there is a lace demo there. The Palazzo Davanzati in Florence has only just redone its lace room and is very good. I always like the Poldi Pezzoli in Milan. The lace is entirely in an unprepossessing metal storage/display thing in an unvisited hallway, but once you find it you can pull out the drawers, and leaf through the upright framed display items to your heart's content. The Kantcentrum museum in Bruges has been moved (only a little way) and remodelled . It opened last year and I visited last October. I was very impressed. It is modern, with exhibits of fantastic lace, and interactive displays of how lace, both bobbin and needle, is made. Well worth a visit. Upstairs, above the museum, there are often classes in progress, which you can visit and watch the lac being made. Downstairs again there is the Kantcentrum shop! I was at both the Kantmuseum in Bruges and the Museum of Costume and Lace in Brussels last fall which were mentioned in other posts. Here's my take: Bruges: The museum is quite small, but nice, and they do daily demonstrations, but be sure to check the times before you go. I think the demos are in the afternoon, but I missed them because it didn't work with my schedule. But there is also a lace shop called 't Apostelientje conveniently across the street from the museum. You must visit there! Everything is hand made (certified), both antique and contemporary, and they have even better pieces than the museum (IMHO)! Make sure to go through the main part of the shop to the small room off to the side to see the good stuff. They also have some lace supplies. But be sure to check the hours before you go. www.apostelientje.be Brussels: Most of the lace is in cabinets in drawers in a darkly lit corner of one of the floors. They had some really nice stuff that was worth seeing, and I'm grateful it is on display at all, but is was a little annoying to have to go through all the squeeky drawers and hard to see in the low light. You're trip sounds lovely! And lace makes nice, light souvenirs!
