[lace] Twentieth anniversary flash drive

If something is out of use in 10 years time, I don't think that would bother some of us as we won't be around then! But on a sensible note, many have been in a situation where they have no cash to spare to spend on something which isn't a necessity. So could perhaps someone design a commemorative easy piece of lace we could make or a downloadable graphic which could be transferred to a T-shirt, cover cloth or cotton bag at home using the appropriate printer transfer paper. I'd hate to see any one excluded from marking the occasion for financial reasons. Hello Carol That goes for me too - I'm completely in the dark - no pun intended ;o) I like the idea of a small box which would be good for makers of all sorts of lace - though another bobbin wouldn't go astray!!! Re: [lace] Twentieth anniversary flash drive
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_flash_drive A flash drive is a portable storage device used with computers, which has a USB interface; you plug it into a USB socket. They're sometimes called thumb drives, because they are about the size of a thumb. They come in a wide variety of storage capacities, up to 256Gb. You can store a lot of photos, articles, patterns, etc., in that! They can be very useful, since every modern computer has USB sockets. Not so useful if you've switched to iPods and the like, but if you're working with real desktop computers or laptops, they provide a very convenient method of transferring information from one machine to another. Computer technicians swear by them, as you can carry lots of diagnostic programs around, and you can boot computers using them, so you can install an OS on them and bring up a cranky computer that's refusing to start and work on it. And apparently, as one gentle posted, some scanners will now output directly to flash drives, which in a museum/university setting would be oh so very useful for students/researchers; I know we would have loved that capability at the Oregon Historical Society when I worked there. Hope this helped, I may have geeked out too much. Jours, John Mead Tacoma, WA USA - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Twentieth anniversary flash drive
Carol and Diana, A flash drive is a small device -not as big as your thumb- which is plugged into the USB port of a computer so that files (documents or pictures, for example) can be saved there. Once on the flash drive, they can easily be accessed or copied to as many other computers an you want. They often have a lanyard or cord attached so that they can be worn around the neck. My grandson is required to have one in his middle school. Instead of saving his work on school computers, he saves it on his flash drive and when he gets home, he can continue his work on his own computer. [lace] Twentieth anniversary flash drive
Although I like the bobbin idea, and I love the idea of a commemorative cloth, how about this idea? Why don't we have a 20th Anniversary Flash drive made with a lace design on the cap. I propose this idea because Arachne is an internet group. It is now the case that people store and share lace photos and information via flash drives. I have dozens of flash drives lying around and can never locate the one with the lace pictures on it because they tend to look alike. One with a lace pattern on it would stand out. My daughter informs me that it is now the case that gold, bejeweled designer flash drives are being given as love tokens, much as bobbins once were. In fact the museum has several distinctive flash drives, including one that is in the shape of a mummy case, which are unique and fun. There may even be a secondary market for these at lace conventions as people who have come out without their flash drives realize that they could be receiving images from others at the convention. If a profit were realized it could be donated to the lace cause of choice. And no, I don't want to spear head this project. It is just an idea I had. Re: [lace] Twentieth anniversary flash drive -- some logistics
There's a good dealer in flash drives with logos: http://www.flashbay.com/ One person mailed me privately a good idea: one person in each country could be responsible for distributing them in that country so no one had to deal with foreign postage for a lot of mailings. Also, FlashBay might be willing to send parts of a large order to multiple addresses, so the person organizing this wouldn't even have to send batches out to other countries for distribution. Payment for each drive would be via PayPal only. Just some ideas. (Ain't the Internet wonderful?!!) Re: Fw: [lace] Twentieth anniversary flash drive
That's a good thought, Bev. As someone in software engineering, however, I can say I don't see anything on the horizon. The internal medium might change (i.e. non-volatile memory, otherwise known as flash memory, might be replaced by something else), but the format and USB connection is likely to be around for years more because of how widely used they are. Now a question would be if there's a new USB version coming out (USB2 is pretty old now) or a more efficient file format, but if so they would almost certainly be backwards compatible, at least for a decade or so. Re: [lace] Twentieth anniversary flash drive
I personally love this idea! I can never have too many flash drives and as a person who uses continental bobbins and prefers them to all be the same, this really appeals. I also like the idea of cover cloths. I have an open stand that holds 6 pillows and some I keep covered with cloths from special occasions, others change with the seasons. As we all have different ways of making/storing/displaying lace I think it's a great idea to offer several options to commemorate our 20th. I'm a bit late chiming in on this as I was traveling but regarding many of Arachne's members just lurking on the list I have to say I'm also guilty of mostly being a lurker although I try to read it most every day. Travel and lots of moves usually mean that by the time I've read something it has been answered. And sometimes it's just been more comfortable to answer individually. Every once in awhile this list can bite. Not often but it only takes one or two not so nice replies to make one just a little leery of posting. But as far as receiving wonderful advice and opinions when asked for - I can't imagine not having this community as a resource. I have been the recipient of great instruction and advice whenever I asked for assistance. So for all of you who do answer and write to Arachne on a regular basis, thank you. You never know when something you've said will give someone that aha moment. Dona in mostly, Havre de Grace, MD but often in Jerusalem. Almost finished with the 2nd of 3 torchon edgings for a christening gown. - if only there were more hours in the day. I perceive the lace flash drive as being something so innately pretty that you would wear it as a pendant, a lovely vintage piece, even after the USB technology is obsolete. Hi All As a Science Historian, the one thing I can tell right now is that a flash drive will be old technology and will have no use within 10 years. Data storage devices change every time there is a new advance. It is only a matter of a few years before flash drives are a thing of the past and only a few more years after that that they will no longer be supported ie unreadable. Following up on the idea of the flash drive... ( thanks, Devon, Bev, and Nancy in particular)... I realize that while I have several of then, I rarely use them any more. One reason is that I find my iPhone and IPad so much more efficient for transferring information from one device to the other (check out an app called Polkast which lets you exchange information wirelessly!), and flash drives are of no use with them. And, I suspect they might be obsolete soon, making the purchase of a new one of any quality a gamble.
