[lace] lace timeline

[lace] Lace timeline Purls
Hello All! Arachne--what an embarrassment of riches! As usual I can't thank you enough for all the help, resources encouragement. Jean, mea culpa déjà vu! I vaguely remember reading the article you referenced. How could I have forgotten! It's a quick read hits all the high spots. Thank you for jogging my foggy brain. It truly deserves a professional print spiral binding. Devon, thank you for introducing me to Judyth Gwynne! The Illustrated Dictionary of Lace text photos are lovely but the table showing the historical artistic influences on lace is quite something to behold. Context! And at the end, on pg222, is the simple timeline I was seeking! After spending the better part of two days cross referencing the Lace app with Lorelei's site other online resources, I culled nine pages of notes to boil down into a useable chart. Mine will probably be color coded with a legend for distinctive characteristics. While I don't expect it to be particularl! y scholarly, I do hope it will be useful for demos etc. to help me ( others) visualize how we got to where we are today. I must have been channeling Jean because I actually subdivided the laces in a similar way to the DATS article she mentioned. My understanding of Venetian Normandy lace is much improved; other areas need more study. Lorelei, the Lace For Study link is fab! One can never have too many pictures of exquisite lace these have size references. Thank you--how thoughtful relevant! Last but not least, Alex Stillwell's Cassell Illustrated Dictionary also arrived from interlibrary loan. I would describe this book as Therese de Dillmont meets Pamela Nottingham! Lots of terms with diagrams--oh my! Just flipping thru, I stumbled upon forgotten purls. Does this refer to a method for fixing a piece of lace that has lost (or forgotten) its picots? If so, perhaps there is hope for a piece I made many years ago. Dare I mention that, with these resour! ces alone, I now have newsletter fodder for several months! Every new sletter needs an educational tidbit I can hardly wait to share. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA USA, where it's been a great day for lace! Re: [lace] Lace timeline Purls
Glad you liked the Gwynne book. I thought that there was a simple time line in it, but when I looked, instead I found the more complex one about historical and artistic influences. So, thank you for drawing my attention to the simple time line. It is certainly a gem. Devon In a message dated 7/16/2015 5:22:07 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, hottl...@neo.rr.com writes: Hello All! Re: [lace] lace timeline
Susan, A couple of years ago I was asked to write a section about identifying hand-made lace in a booklet that was used for a series of workshops for textile curators organized by Dress and Textiles Specialists (DATS) in partnership with the VA. As the aim was to help non-specialists to identify hand-made lace I tried to give an overview of how lace styles changed over time rather than include lots of photos which could have been rather intimidating. The booklet is available online at http://www.dressandtextilespecialists.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Identifying-Handmade-lace.pdf and also includes useful information about conservation, display and storage of lace. Thank you Jean, this is something I will surely make use of. I will also make sure a friend who runs an antique mall has a copy for reference when customers ask her about the lace being sold by her many different vendors. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Jean Very well done! I have added a link to it to laceioli's IDENTIFICATION-HISTORY group, the ONLINE RESOURCES page. [lace] Lace timeline resources
Hello All! While I'm waiting for the library to deliver books by Stillwell Gwynne, I decided to tackle the lace timeline issue stumbled upon these sites. The Barony of Ildhafn has some nice links at: Ildhafn.lochac.sca.org. Marla Mallett in Atlanta posted lace photos at: marlamallett.com. I believe there was piece identified as Mechlin there. Hope these are helpful. Now I must find a way to organize my notes in a useful format. Susan I would also like to suggest that anyone interested in a lace timeline might start with all the references I have collected for laceioli, where we have a group specifically for lace identification and history. There are links to photos, a list of online resources (reviewed for moderate to good reliability), and a recommended book list. Marla Mallett's site appears on the laceioli list. However, I just looked at her bibliography (posted on her site) and find that Santina Levey's LACE does not appear. I am sorry to say, that is a major flaw. I especially recommend laceforstudy as a site with LOTS of very good photos, and the dates and attributions seem to be reliable. http://www.laceforstudy.org.uk/ Lorelei Halley laceioli.ning.com needlelacetalk.ning.com lynxlace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. First, let me thank all who wrote with suggestions resources! That's quite a reading list I'd better get started before I'm in the urn. Second, I don't think my effort will be particularly scholarly so perhaps I won't offend those who are more detail oriented. If I can identify the major laces by quarter century, that would be a place to start. I do think it will help me have a better understanding of the hows whys by comparing my lace timeline to other historical events. When I found that my taste in music art shared a timeline, it was an epiphany. Lorelei, your many wonderful examples/explanations on your website are very helpful. Unfortunately, I'm not a member of Pinterest so can't view anything using your link so will use your regular site. Linda, thanks for mentioning genealogy as some laces might better relate to a lace tree. Devon, Adele Agnes, I will ask the library to track down the Gwynne Dictionary. It will give them something to do besides ! requesting James Patterson novels DVDs. Plus it's always good to try before you buy. Brian, thanks for the Honiton reference. One can never know enough about this charming technique! Last but not least, it would seem like I could cross reference some of the entries in the Lace app. It's moments like this that make me wish I could remember how to use Excel--fill in the cells sort by category! [lace] Lace timeline.
This is not my subject however, as a self appointed guardian of East Midland lace activities I would like to point you to H J Yallop. The History of the Honiton Lace Industry. Exeter Press. I know that Mrs Bury Palliser. History of Lace. Dover Press, does not have a good reputation for accuracy. However she does history in a somewhat chatty manner, and i can not think that all her writing is incorrect. She is a good source of a wide ranging history of lace. I would suggest that users of her book check the facts a little more than usual. In a non academic way, I rather like her book! Of course, you will all know that Gertrude Whiting is my favourite writer of all things lace and tools. However i could not point you to one of her books that would be particularly useful in creating a timeline. Oh, I almost forgot, I suspect a lot of information could be gleaned from Alexandra Stilwell’s, Illustrated Dictionary of Lacemaking, Cassel. [sorry!!] I might remind you of more than a few of my publications on lace tools were as a result of excellent cooperation of members of this group. I think this group could provide most of the information needed for such a “timeline”. I like “timelines” good luck and good cooperation. With smiles of encouragement.
