I believe Bart & Francis have some ultra-fine linen thread, finer than 90/2 or
100/3. But I may be cnfusing it with their ultrafine cotton. I remember
seeing it/them at an IOLI convention a couple of years ago. Check their
website.

Hi Susan, I'm sure it is possible for someone to hand sew the garment
itself with linen thread but unfortunately I think that would be beyond my
seamstress skills. Perhaps there's a place for hand sewn garments and I
admire someone who can do it skillfully but in my mind, there's a reason
sewing machines were developed as well as spinning wheels vice hand
spindles or 8-harness looms vice back strap looms. Things can be done more
efficiently and consistently. Of course as I write that it strikes me that
- I. Make. Lace. Which some people think doesn't make sense either when you
can go to the store and get something that is more consistent and didn't
take several years to produce. So I suppose that logic isn't logical at
all. :-) I guess the difference is that I don't have the desire
to acquire the necessary skills for hand sewing the dress itself.

[lace] linen christening gown

2013-01-26 Thread hottleco
Hello All! Please forgive if I am asking the wrong question here--but is it
possible to hand sew the garment with linen thread? My curiosity stems from a
(vintage) child's silk dress that I own. It is completely hand-sewn. When I
checked Hedgehog Handworks the finest linen thread offered is 100/3. Wm.
Booth, Draper offers 90/2 & it says on his site that it is suitable for sewing
handkerchief weight linen. Usual disclaimers, no relationship to the sellers,
satisfied customer etc. There are books, online resources & (occasionally)
classes available if you decide to work in hand. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Palm
