Catherine, I missed the initial email about your website, thank you Nancy for your comments and link. Your work is exquisite. You are the best. I watched every video and one I would like to see is of you making the Point de Gaze netting. I know you say practice is the only way to achieve a good result, but I would love to see your technique. I have never seen it taught and would appreciate it if you could do a video of it. I am sure I am not alone. Also could you tell us what you use for your base. You mention graph paper, but it not something I am familiar with in the US, does anyone know of an equivalent? Maybe I missed that detail in my haste to see everything. Janice I've been busy lately putting a web site together and thought you might like to take a look. I really enjoy seeing the work of others and thought perhaps I should share some of my efforts over the past years. There may be the odd typo/error and I'd be grateful if you spot any, to let me know. Hi Sandi Your new website is wonderful and your beautiful designs are just gorgeous. I vividly remember seeing for the very first time, your wonderful shell exhibited at the John Bull exhibition when Susan and Roger Cox were still running The English Lace School in Devon. We had never seen anything like it before and we were spellbound by your exquisite use of colour! Like yourself, I'm a bit 'long in thee tooth' for all this modern technology and sometimes have to rely on the younger generation to get me out of trouble, but they all lead such busy lives! [lace] new website for Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a new website and an entirely new way of searching its collections. They are also soliciting feedback on it at the following Facebook page. If you have a chance, why don't you go search the site, and offer feedback. While limiting searches, it is best to remember that most of the lace is in the department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, so it is best to limit the search to that in the where in the museum section, otherwise you will get every single oil painting or sketch with the term lace somewhere in the description. Go to _www.metmuseum.org_ (http://www.metmuseum.org) , then to Collections from the tab on the top of the page, and then to search collections. Feedback is being solicited at the following site. _http://www.facebook.com/metmuseum?sk=app_127709503932081_ (http://www.facebook.com/metmuseum?sk=app_127709503932081) Devon - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hello Janice, Yes I have found a use for several of your small designs and have worn my poppy with pride for the last two years (adding my money to the collection boxes just the same, of course). I have a pile of 'must have a go at patterns' when time allows, but I end up having to do a prority list. Last year was our 40th anniversary so we concentrated on that project for quite a while of course and are very happy with the finished article. We also have ideas of other items we would like to go with our napkins, but time slips on. I had already made napkins for two of my sisters for special events over the previous 18 months so I am currently making up the last set for my other sister (cant have her feeling left out). Special event cards for friends and family have also to be slotted in, but I keep going through my stash and my books as well as having a play with the design program, can we extend the day to 36 hours instead of 24 please, grin. Jane Partridge was the designer for that particular bookmark and I think has given the location of the pattern, so hopefully all who would like to make it will be able to. DH has been adding a new section to the website to include some of the engraved glass pieces he has created since 1980. He is doing a final tweek after we have proof read it between us, so it should be available to view within an hour or so. The main link is the same and at the base of the site map is the link into his section. So anyone who enjoys artistic work, might well like to see them. Thank you to you and to all the others who have allowed us access to your various patterns which has allowed us to make lovely lace and also to try out a bit of design work of our own. However, I have tried to get as many of the pictures with pattern details but for some pieces I only have a prickings. If anyone can help with the un-credited patterns that would be great. The address is: http://homepage.eircom.net/~rhiannonmann/index.htm Any feedback is appreciated- its amazing how blinded I can be when its my own design. All the links work for me but I would like to know that it is all functional for everyone else. I too love the use of the photo frame edgings but had not considered oval designs for this purpose~ very classical and beautiful. Janice Tamara should have it in her stash, Janice - it is one of mine, that was published in the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette (Vol 20 No 4 (Summer 2006 - bookmarks and fridge magnets) and a matching insertion in Vol 21 No 2 (Winter 2006). For those who have the magazines, there is a vertical line of pinholes missing from the right hand side of the bookmark on the left, and on the left hand side of the bookmark on the right - they should be the same 'template' as the two in the centre, which are correct. Possibly, if you (and Diane Williams, who also asked Sue about it) contact Bev Walker, who is editor of the Gazette, she may be able to tell you if the back issues are still available. I was lucky to find a teacher locally and went for lessons for almost 4 years. In this way I learned the basics of several techniques which have been a huge help over the time since she retired and I have continued on at home. I did find the dvd very helpful in learning how to do enough milanese braids to work the hummingbird and would like to make some other pieces in the future. I am not convinced that I could have got this far with just book learning. I have also met some very helpful people via the groups. I was pleased with the look of the site too. Hello Alex If Jean has really only been using a computer for a couple of months she's done fantastically well. There's substance to the site, not just a blog, the layout is clean and the hyperlinks all work. Well done. Re the pattern; as I could see no 'download' button and no hand appeared over the image my (mac) instinct was to click and drag it off to the desktop, which worked. Then I read the instuctions - so right clicked - save image as ad that works too. It printed out at the correct size. However, most people would expect to find some sort of download 'button'. Doesn't have to be a button as such just the word will do so long as it's hyperlinked directly to the image file - and include target=_blank in the html so that it doesn't close the main window.
