Dear Arachnes,

I am glad Maureen  Corrine had a good visit to Ely. I managed to get over
myself last week, and found other friends there as well. It is a lovely
exhibition, and ends at the end of this week (28th)  - so if you can I do
recommend you visit.

The Lady Chapel is a great exhibition space - for those of you who don't know
it -all the stained glass was destroyed  in the reformation so has high level
clear glass panes, and as a result lovely daylight. The exhibits were hung in
the statue niches round the walls at (shortish) eye level.

Sadly it was a no photography zone, but there are a few images on the
exhibition website: none good enough to see the exhibits close up but they
give an idea of the exhibition.

As Maureen says there was not a scrap of lace but absolutely fabulous goldwork
and silk shading, with some RSN apprentice and demonstration pieces
half-finished to show techniques. These mostly date from when the RSN  had an
Ecclesiastical works department in the first half on the 20th century.  The
Litany of Loreto  panels were stunning. Worked in what looks like single
strand filament silk with a muted colour range the limited published pictures
I have been able find on the web do not do them justice.

Hi Louise et al,

I would agree that the exhibition is wonderful - but I did have a rueful smile 
when I read the messages.     Umpteen years ago, my late husband and I went to 
Ely, and clambered right to the top, up some really winding and dark stairs, to 
the gallery where the most wonderful stained glass - from mediaeval through to 
modern - was displayed.    This was on a sort of balcony, miles high up in the 
cathedral, and I have a fear of heights, and a fear of dark enclosed spaces, 
which did rather prey on my mind all the time we were up with the Gods in the 
roof!     And, when it came time to descend, I couldn't bring myself to put one 
foot in front of the other to go down the stairs - dark and fearsome as they 
were.   Impasse!    For quite a while!   Until an American tourist asked my 
husband if he was having trouble - the reply was definitely in the affirmative, 
so the American hauled off and hit me under the chin, knocked me out, and they 
both manhandled
 me to ground level - I have no recollection or idea of how they did it, but 
the relief when I did fin ally come round, and find myself on ground level, was 
exquisite!   I will not be going to the top again, of anything.
