[lace] visit to l'Arboç (long)
Hello all, Last Sunday, we had the lace Day Event in l'Arboç, near Barcelona. I was pleasantly surprised by the visit of Antje, my Spanish fellow on Arachne list, so we went to the Lace Day Fair with our DH and other lacemakers that joined us. So, here it is our lace report. As you know, lace day events in Spain are held open air. This time, the weather was not as good as on other occasions and the strong wind spoiled the lace Day. The ground of the place, being of sandy soil, flew all over the place and the laces, and the lacemakers that were working, were really upset . As time passed, the wind got stronger and definitely the lacemakers had to retire and go home. This lace event is really interesting because the lace made there, is a bit different from the lace of other places. They have a proper style. In a general way I would say that the characteristics are: very fine thread, many bobbins (by hundreds), torchon ground made TTC PIN TTC, rose ground, and /or tulle ground with floral motifs in cloth stitch adding and taking off pairs all the time. So, while they are working the lace, lots of cut threads can be seen on the lace, which make it look very chaotic and hard to work. But the result is a very fine lace. Some of lacers at the event have been making lace all their life. I took a picture of one who must be almost 100 years old. In l'Arboç, there is also a lace museum. We had the opportunity to visit the announced jewelery exhibition. Even though the pictures are not good because it was so crowded, we took images of some of the lace jewels displayed at the show room to share with you. In the lot I have also included some images of the most interesting laces that the local lacemakers were working at the demo, as well as some pictures of the Museum lace collection. We hope that you enjoy the pictures at: http://picasaweb.google.es/carolina.g.gallego/LaceDayLArbo2007?authkey=3uKyUrlu3R8 We want you to know that here in Spain lace has been made since very old times and in many different places, being Cataluña one of the most important ones. Thanks a lot, Carolina, for the nice pictures. The l'Arboç lace is really stunning. Is there a school for lace in that area or books about it? Or is it just given from one generation to the next? Also thank you for the Christmas animation! Merry Christmas also from Berlin - and health, sharp sight and nimble fingers for 2008. Best, Achim. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What lovely photos Carolina. What struck me most was that the long pillows used look very much like the traditional Maltese pillow, rather than the long flat one I have seen used in La Coruna. The traditional lace itself is beautiful and it reminds me of Bucks point lace. Just in case I don't check in again before Christmas, Christmas Greetings to all of you.
