RE: [lace] Bowes Museum Lace

2007-03-25 Thread Carole Lassak
I was lucky enough to see this exhibition on a recent trip to England. It
is, bar none, the finest lace exhibit that I've ever seen. It was even more
meaningful because I got to go with three of my best lace friends so there
was someone else along to appreciate the fine displays. Extraordinary!!! Not
only the quantity of the lace, but the exceptional quality.

A friend was ordering one of the Bowes Museum Lace Catalogues Fine
Fashionable 'Lace from the Blackborne Collection,' and ordered another one
for me, which I collected at Lace Day on Saturday.
What a Feast for the Eyes!

How lucky some of you are, to be able to go and see all this beautiful lace.

However, I shall just sit back and drool over all those lovely photos!!! :)

What a wonderful collection - and I believe it is only part of what was in
the original collection. I see some of the pieces that they had are now in
the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Hmmm! Another good reason to
get there one day !! :)

Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz. where it is a glorious early autum day,
with it being sunny and pleasantly warm.

RE: [lace] Bowes Museum

2004-01-03 Thread Carolyn Hastings
Hi,

We visited Bowes Museum last March, and I went to the web site because I
must say the lace, as a collection, certainly didn't jump out at us.
Obviously would have helped to know what is available before the visit!

Anyway, on the web site is the description of (among hundred of items with
lace) a handkerchief bordered in lace. This is how the description reads:
Linen handkerchief with Meander lace border like Honiton but home made.
What is Meander lace??

The web site doesn't give a number, so I can't direct you to this particular
item. I searched by selecting catagories from their drop down menus, and
happened upon a selection with quite a few handkerchiefs. I suspect whoever
cataloged these didn't know a whole lot about lace.

Regards,
Carolyn
