Added to the subject line: "author Goldenberg". When this subject was
raised by Liz in Missouri in late November, I wrote to her privately to ask
the name of the book, since it was not in the original Arachne
correspondence copy I received.

If others are interested, the book is "Lace Its Origin and History" by
Samuel L. Goldenberg, with a 1904 copyright in author's name.

My book came from Tess as a gift for the lace library here. She would
have scanned it for the Arizona site before it became mine.

I thought I'd already looked at all the lace books on Project Gutenberg,
however, today I ran across this one on the origin of lace and found it
interesting. It has a lot of photos of examples of different kinds of lace.

Thank you Karen. This sounds very useful. Several years ago I contacted
LightningSource and I would have had to deal with the local company in each
country independently. That would have meant three setting up costs and the
currency conversion and tax implications. On top of that they would only
accept pdfs made using specific programs that I do not have and are expensive.
I did not know anyone who had one of those programs and they could not suggest
anyone that would produce them when I asked. I don’t think they were
interested.

Re: [lace] Lace book authors

2015-02-06 Thread Karen Bovard
I can fill in some details about POD companies in the US.  I have compiled
several articles on a blog page should you want more information.  I feel
almost as proud of the fact that I found my way through the self-publishing
maze and was able to publish/print  my book without the possibility of
loosing money as I am of the book itself!   The site
is: http://nichebookpublishing4cheap.blogspot.com/  If you figure out my
system I have alot of information about publishing niche market books there.
I used a Google Blogger site and each article is a separate page/post.  There
are a couple of posts with no information in themthose are on my 'to do'
list. In a nutshell there are only two or three 'true' self-publishing print
on demand companies:  CreateSpace (affiliated with Amazon), Lightening
Source and now IngramSpark. All the other POD companies are fee-based or
author services based which means that they want alot of money from you to
create your book for you.  As a published author, you already have done this
or know how to do it yourself, thus the 'true' POD companies are what you
want. You upload your print ready cover and interior (2 separate files), they
analyze it for print-readiness, then inform you to order a proof copy.   I
have researched Lightening Source (LS) and CreateSpace (CS) extensively and
have published my findings (go to the #10. post at this
address: http://nichebookpublishing4cheap.blogspot.com/  ).   IngramSpark
is a relatively new company that I need to research and include in my
website.  CreateSpace, in my experience, is THE way to go. LS does about the
same thing but charges an upfront cost (not too bad!) to get going.  CS does
not.  All it costs to get a book published with CS is a proof copy--the
actual, end cost of the book plus postage---in my case less than $10.  When I
had to send a book to Canada, shipping direct from CS was the most
cost-effective way to go.   I have been very happy with the quality.   So
what I would suggest is to have your book digitally stored with CS and then
when you get a US order, you can order (through the internet) with them and
have the books sent to your client. The only other option I can think of is
to have someone in the US be your order person. Karen BovardThe ShuttleSmith

Hi Brenda

I have looked into this idea. The only print-on-demand printing company I
could find that prints in UK, USA and Australia is too poor a quality (pulp
fiction) for my diagrams and photos. They also require you to have separate
accounts for each country, pay the set-up cost for each country and pay you
in
the local currency, with all the conversion and tax implications that brings.
I was not going there. However, they will send out individual books at a cost
of .20 per book on top of the postage (that was 3 years ago).

I quote cost of book plus postage and require to be paid in sterling (PGB) by
cheque or PayPal. I do not use a commercial PayPal account. Apart from the
first flurry, about 6 months when a book comes out, my PayPal receipts drop
down and it costs about 7% to use a domestic account. Ignore any threats they
make, they are only trying to make you use the more expensive account, just
keep less than ,900 in the account.

I will be happy to answer any questions you have on the subject to the best
of
my ability.

Happy lacemaking

Oh! :My! I guess you have not read my regular postings on Arachne.

When I retired, I had to build a home, designed by me. This is because
all the houses shown to me had too many windows and doors in rooms that would
interrupt book shelves, or the floors would not support the very heavy
weight of a concentrated collection of books.

My library consists of over 4,000 volumes from around the world. Mostly,
it is about Lace and Embroidery. However, I think we need to study these
in context with how they were/are used in order to properly honor the
women/men who came before us or are now practicing these arts. Therefore,
there
are also many books on Textiles and Costumes (to which Lace and Embroidery
are applied), Quilts, Beading, Ribbons, Antiques, Decorating (with), Tools
for making, Machine Embroidery, Sewing, many related crafts, How-to-Teach,
Color Theory, Design, Conservation Restoration, History, Art --
everything that one would want to have if they were doing research, including
a 19th
C. encyclopedia (before World Wars rearranged nations).

In the Lace category of my inventory, there are over 1,000 titles. These
include carefully-selected books on Crochet and Knitting.

In a separate storage room there are periodicals on these subjects,
including Guild bulletins of the 20th and 21st C. from the U.S. and U.K.
There a
re also Victorian era publications of needlework and many booklets that
needlework shops used to sell. These have not been inventoried.

There is also a studio (largest room in house) with ample storage. It was
used for teaching, and now it is used for storage of paper files,
supplies, lace, embroidery, etc.

Since the beginning of Arachne in 1995, I have been writing about the need
in America for a International Lace and Embroidery Museum. Guilds do a
lot, but just do not do the subjects justice when it comes to pressing for a
all-encompassing collection, exhibitions and study opportunities.

Lace and embroidery have traveled together through history, sharing the
same clothing, household linens and ecclesiastical works of thread art.
Guilds focus too narrowly for a comprehensive understanding of the glory of
lace and embroidery. Museums have failed us in the U.S. We are a nation
composed of all nationalities in the world. Women (mostly) have brought their
skills here, own wonderful things, and have no permanently-protected
organized place to donate them for future generations to study.

I think this is a job for The Smithsonian, which is paid for by the taxes
paid by everyone (about 1/2 of us being female). They think nothing of
spending billions on a Space museum. Most other museums under them are
focused on a male-dominated society. An exception might be the American
Textile
Museum in Lowell MA which was rescued recently by The Smithsonian.
However, men owned/operated the textile businesses; women worked for the men.
Textiles have been a major force in our economic history and they have been
neglected terribly in museums - from the Colonial period until we now permit
(blame Washington) cheap imports to dominate. Here we sit. Stalled.

Out on the internet somewhere is my proposal for a museum and library. It
is as relevant today as it was when written over 15 years ago.
Inspiration came from places like Gawthorpe Hall, England.

There are however some books that command ludicrous prices everywhere. a
particular (non lace related) book I've been after for quite some time rarely
if ever shows for less than £240 and many times goes for between £250 and £400
second hand! I believe it's original list price only 15 years ago was $45!

in the years I've searched for it I've only come across it about 5 times though
and even Abe books which is usually fantastic at this sort of thing has it on a
very sporadic basis.

So I suppose the moral of the story would be to pick up the newer books while
they are still available (or at least that's what I tell myself each time I go
on a book buying spree :-))

Liz there might not be a reason for being suspicious about the price being bid
up (or there might). One of the items I sold was the travel pillow that I'd
made. It went for what I consider to be a ridiculously high price and I think
it might have been popular because I'd included a small box for tools and
threads and a removable pin cushion in it. A couple that have sold since
haven't got anywhere near what I got for mine.

Re: [lace] Lace book prices

To Liz and Jean -

Sadly, another thing going on with bidders on eBay is that there are people out
there who are inexperienced bidders, and jump right into the bidding. One or
two people will increase their bid by a dollar or so at a time, and drive the
bid up in the early days of the auction. When I see this happen with something
I have my eye on, I know I'll have to be there at the ending bell. If this
isn't practical, I just stop watching it. It does make me nuts to see
something go way beyond it's reasonable value by two inexperienced bidders in a
war with each other.

A couple of years ago, someone paid over $150 for the original Skovgaard book,
and after that there were lots of postings of similar books with inflated buy
it now prices. They didn't sell, of course, and then it was a very long time
before the book was available on ebay again.

More experienced bidders decide what they are willing to pay and then stick to
it. They know the value of the item and weigh that against their desire to own
it. But they don't bid until the end of the auction. If their Max is hit
before then, they don't have that feeling that their item is being lost and
get sucked into a bidding war that drives the price up.

We have been bidding on different items and what I am noticing is that a
few
hours before the end of the bidding, if no one has bid on the item apart
from
me, someone comes in and make one bid higher than I've initially offered
but
not too high to push me out of the bidding. They then don't bid again.
I've
looked at the bidder's history and on one item I bought this person has
bid 15
times and never won anything, yet the book I bought went for £3 but until
an
hour before the bidding ended it was at 99p.

Am I missing something here? I am confused about what you think is going
on that makes you suspicious. Do you think the other bidder is simply
running up the price with no intention of buying? Or that she only bids on
things
you are bidding on?

I think that what you are describing is an auction. Two people have
decided what the maximum is that they want to pay, and the item goes to the
person who wants to pay the most. Is there some obligation on the part of
bidders to bid early in the process or for sellers to sell at the price that
the item has sat at for the longest time at the auction?

The other bidder doesn't know your maximum bid. She only knows her maximum
bid. She could put in her maximum bid at the end of the auction when there
is no time for either of you to increase it, and have you outbid her, due
to the automatic bidding process. That is apparently what happened. A lot
of auctions are decided in the last hour of bidding. The great thing about
the automatic bidding process is that you can decide exactly how much you
are willing to pay for an item in advance, and then you don't need to think
about it any more.

Re: [lace] Lace book corrections

2005-12-20 Thread Jo Falkink

Hello all

For technical reasons I copied this thread from arachne to bobbinlace

In response to a thread on corrections pages to lace books, Tamara Duvall
wrote:

Jean and David Leader started, a while ago, a webpage of errata to books
of living authors. It was supposed to collect just such proofreading
slip-ups. The project got forgotten over time (part of the reason being
that errors needed to be found first, then the author's permission given
for such corrections) but it seems to me that the Visual Intro to Bucks
Point, with the list of oopsies provided by the author herself would be a
heaven-sent addition.
(...) However I now realize - what will already be obvious to those of you
who work in this area - that a project of this sort will never be
completed and the idea of fixed web pages (like the rest of the site) was
inappropriate. What one needs to do is set up a database of corrections
(...). The problem is that our personal webspace is a 'freebie' that comes
with our broadband connection and email, and does not include database
facilities (...)

Yahoo supports simple databases. So I created one on
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bobbinlace/database
I chose the most lively group with the most members I know of. Go ahead and
fill it. Though the fields look small, you can type or paste lengthy
stories. I just didn't discover any control over wrapping and new lines.

If this database is widely supported (that means: gets filled and keeps
getting filled) I might consider (this isn't a promise) generating a more
accessible version of the contents. But I'd be happy to transfer ownerhsip
of the database itself to allow for corrections on the contents.

Thanks Sue for all that, now I can rest assured I made the best decision. I
checked my order today and it will arrive any day. They allow 11-15 days
delivery to Australia.

today on Amazon. Even with the exchange rates against us and postage, it was
cheaper than the copies available here in Australia.

The book is gorgeous and well worth getting. It weighs 2lb 11.25 oz (you'll
need imperial measurements for the USPS site).

Amazon.com are currently charging $30.60 for it i.e. $14.40 off the list
price. According to their website they charge $6.99 per parcel + $4.99 per
item to mail things to Australia. So the total will be $42.58, which is
61.35 Australian dollars (according to Ask Jeeves). It will save you a lot
to get it from them.

2004-01-23 Thread Clay Blackwell
I bought this book on ebay a couple of months ago, and it is
really a book of designs. The pictures are white lace on
black pages, and many (if not most) are from old drawings.
For the money, it isn't a bad thing to have, but it wasn't
what I expected. It would be fun to play with some of these
designs, if I ever had the time or inclination.

Hampstead House is a Canadian business that sells
publishers' remainders
at very good prices. Their current listings include the
book: Lace.
It has 128 pages of black and white pictures and drawings
of lace and a
CD (for Windows and Macs) of the pictures. The price is
only C$18.99
 plus postage. (That's approximately US $ 14.50, £8, or
11.50 Euros plus
postage.) I've been buying books from them for years and
can highly
 recommend them. The URL is:
