Re: [lace] Luton Lace Dealer's Pattern Book

2012-11-22 Thread Karen M. Zammit Manduca
A friend just let me know that the new edition is finally available from
 Luton
Museums, I am told the DVD is a great addition. And in the postcard
 section
I found a set of Thomas Lester pattern designs,

 n-book/http://www.lutonculture.com/shop/shop/books-and-media/the-lace-dealers-pattern-book/
This is the first of a series of books showing collections from our
 museums.

Are patterns to work the pieces of lace featured actually included?

I saw these on their website recently, and can't wait to see them in person.
I'll be visiting the museum next week and already have the book and
postcards
on my 'must have' list.

This is the first of a series of books showing collections from our
museums.

This new revised book includes images of all forty-two sheets of lace
samples
from the original book (1998), which were conserved by the Textile
Conservation Centre. Also included for the first time is information about
the samples shown on each sheet, and a simple challenge invites the reader
to
find a detail within the samples.

A DVD also accompanies this book, which allows detailed viewing of each
 sheet.

price £19:99, they accept online purchases via paypal. But the site is
very
slow - all those lacemakers ordering their fix I'd guess.

 Enjoy,

 Louise

RE: [lace] Luton Lace Dealer's Pattern Book

2012-11-22 Thread Louise Bailey
Hi Karen,

No patterns as far as I know, just high quality photos of the samples.
Someone, Sally Barry, I think, has drafted some patterns and published a few
over the years.
Stephanie Peters has some more info on the original on her website if you
google for it.

The pattern book comprises about twenty pages of small samples of mainly Bucks
Point lace, with a few pieces of Bedfordshire, mounted on paper. The pages
were in a leather bound book that originally belonged to a dealer, possibly
John Spencer of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Two of the pages are of
black lace, the remainder are white. The book was used to show what lace was
available for private order.

2012-11-22 Thread Malvary Cole
Some years ago, when the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette was being produced in
Ottawa, we held a workshop to learn how to draft patterns and we drafted a
number of patterns. Whether they were from this same publication or not, I
don't know. The patterns were put together and sent to then current
subscribers as a gift.

Malvary in Ottawa where we are having some beautiful weather for a few
days - forecast of possible snow flurries at the weekend, but 11c today.

Yes, you're right. Sally Barry has self-published a series of four books called
the Luton Lace Treasury. Here's the link to Sally's website:
http://www.gis.net/~scbarry/online_catalog.html
http://www.gis.net/~scbarry/online_catalog.html where you can order the books
directly from her. She lives in Massachusetts, and it's not clear if she will
ship overseas.
