[lace] lace in the 'news'

2017-03-19 Thread Jane

Hi All,

Every week the BBC website invites photographs on a certain theme. This
weeks was 'hobbies'. I wanted to send in a photo of my lace pillow, but
I don't have anything suitable on the go.

But someone else did
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-39292319

It would be nice to think it interested someone enough to make them want
to have a go.

Best wishes,

Fantastic picture of the lace maker.

Since the next subject is "Gardens", perhaps you or someone you know
could send in a picture of someone making lace in a garden in full
bloom.

Re: [lace] Google and Pinerest

2017-03-19 Thread Amanda Babcock Furrow
If you want Google to show you only the original pictures, and nothing
from Pinterest, there is a way to do that!

Along with your search words - say, "alencon lace", for example - just add:
-site:pinterest.com

So the full search words would then be: "alencon lace -site:pinterest.com"

Don't forget the minus sign in front of "site:"! if you leave out that
minus sign, it would show you *only* Pinterest results!

I hope this is useful to someone!

[lace] Re: lace copies

2017-03-19 Thread Susan Vossier
Alex said: I don’t mind friends sharing or teachers supplying my patterns
at
no cost, Thank you Alex!

A friend and I have subscriptions to different lace publications, but both
of us, if we see something in the other's publication, order our own copy
of that particular number. My problem is more with out-of-print books. in
my early days of lace-making, I saw and fell in love with Pat Read's
Milanese lace books, but they were way beyond my capacities at the time; A
couple of years later, when i felt I could tackle them, You couldn't find
the for love or money - well, yes, but a LOT of money on ebay. A friend
lent me hers for a shile (what's the copyright position there?), and I
eventually was lucky enough to get a second-hand copy of the first book
from Roseground.

The same thing happened with Bridget Cook's Idrija lace , but there were
other books on the subject, though not so detailed. I was delighted when
they were reprinted, and am now working my way through mine.
I perfectly understand the feelings of designers, for whom what they earn
from a design is ridiculous compared with the time spent, the knowledge and
skill required, not to mention the inspiration. And how galling it is that
even that minute sum is pirated away.

But there are a lot of frustrated lacemakers out here who can't get designs
legally because they're out of print! (I may say that the only prickings I
download are those which are offered free on sites such as LOKK - or Gon
Homberg's site - for which, much thanks, Gon!)

[lace] Books/ out of print books

2017-03-19 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

I have taken the view that if I am vaguely interested in something and the
opportunity comes up I buy it even if I am not quite ready to go in that
direction.

Guild Libraries are good to introduce new ideas, and I agree with the previous
lacemaker who said that when she finds something she really likes, she seeks
to acquire her own copy of the book.

Cannot remember exactly how long ago was the visit to a Bookstore in Glebe,
Sydney (we were early for a function) when I paid A$120 for five books. One
was the first Read and Kincaid Milanese lace book and one Robyn Wild's, it was
35-40 years ago. Have only recently started venturing into Milanese.

On the other side I have recently acquired a copy of their second book, via
Abe books, used to be in a London Library!

The other reason I buy books when I see them is I like to know about other
styles of Lace (that I will never do) to have a broader understanding of Lace
in general.

Re: [lace] Books/ out of print books

2017-03-19 Thread Clare Lewis
At The Lace Guild we regularly get boxes of books sent to us by families
who are dealing with loved ones estates. If these are duplicates to ones we
already have in the library we sell them as second hand books.

This is a blatant advertising email because we have boxes and boxes of
books which we would love to get out there in the wild again. If you are
looking for a particular book it would certainly be worth dropping the
librarian an email to see if she can help.
