Re: [lace] General Fans Information

2005-09-06 Thread Sue Harvey
Hallo Barbara and all spiders, I saw some wonderful fan sticks at the
Birmingham lace fair last year made by Malcolm Cox and I know he is going to
be there again this Christmas fair, he also makes the most beautiful mother
of pearl fansticks ( very expensive but believe me if I had the spare cash I
would have those) I do not have his website but I expect at least one spider
will have. I am also making the Bucks fan by Bridget Cook it is lovely to
work and I am really enjoying it.

Jeri's discussion about fan museums and collections triggered a couple of
questions that I've been mulling over for a while. I think I'm finally
skilled enough to try a Bucks fan, for which I have the instructions,
pricking, etc.

(1) Do you know where I could obtain nice fan sticks? I would appreciate
any

recommentdations for woodworkers, and especially if anyone has a lead on
mother-of-pearl fanstick makers.

(2) Do they make fansticks custom-ordered to fit the size of the lace? I
can't imagine how else one would be sure to get sticks the right size.

(3) Are there reference publications that give instructions on how to
mount

the lace onto the fan sticks?

Thanks for any info,

I am a newer lace maker and participated last year, and would have been
crushed if the feedback on my little crooked bandage would have been as
harsh
as some of the postings I have been reading concerning the quality and
type of
lace that is to be sent this year. Instead of criticism, I received praise
and
encouragement and made a very dear friend in Australia that I still keep
in
contact with. The thought of someone being disappointed with my lace is
not
very appealing, and believe me it takes just as many hours (or more) for
us

newbies than for the more experienced. If we are trying to encourage more
people to learn lace making, it seems a little backwards to scare them off
with such comments.

 Sue - don't be
silly! You've just sent me into a hysterical fit. I have enough trouble making
a leaf-shaped tally (usually comes out more like string) and am currently
struggling with square tallies. So far I've done over 60 in the current
project and their still coming out as variously shaped blobs - in fact I call
them blobs. I just can't do them no matter what method I try. Fortunately I'm
not entering competitions, so they're just for me and I can put up with them,
 however they turn out.

The thought of any other tally (especially a round
one) makes me want me to end it all.

Although I don't do a lot of needle lace I made a container for mine with a box
that Badminton shuttlecocks come in from the sports shop. I cut it so it was 9
long, Padded it slightly and covered it with cotton cover, you need only tuck
the ends inside as the cases come with metal ends that snap in so you can pop
all the lace, threads etc into either end and snap shut then all is kept clean
and tidy. I use thin black elastic over both ends to hold the work while in
progress.

Re: [lace] My bucks efforts so far

2013-10-02 Thread Sue Harvey
Well done, that's exactly how I taught myself Bucks but I used Geraldine Stotts
book A Visual Introduction to Bucks Point Lace I ended up with lots of little
lengths of lace which being me I did not want to just waste, so I made a
christening outfit for a small doll and decorated it with all the lengths (
including lace round the bottom of the drawers) if you would like to see it
it's on my pictures on the photo site.

[lace] The Lace Place

2013-11-24 Thread Sue Harvey
Hi to Australian Lacemakers, my son has just returned from a tour of Australia
mainly out of Perth. On his trip he came across a shop called The Lace Place
in small town called Hyden. he went in because he knew how I liked lace and
was surprised to find it was like a little museum of lace from 1650 onwards.
He brought me back a leaflet describing the shop and museum but unfortunately
although I emailed them to see if they had a website my email was returned as
undeliverable. Have any of you visited?

[lace] Fashion Passion

2014-10-19 Thread Sue Harvey
I went on Saturday with other members of Norfolk Lacemakers to demonstrate at
Norwich Castle in the Fashion Passion show which was a platform for all
things fibre and fashion. There were many others doing all sorts, knitting,
embroidery, spinning, fashion students, and much much more. We had a lovely
day, we sat in the rotunda which overlooked where the medieval musicians and
dancers were performing they were very good. Our have a go pillows were much
in demand with one lovely little boy who came back three times much to his
families surprise. We had many foreign visitors too, several who had never
even seen or heard of bobbin lace and they were very interested in learning
much more about it. I feel the day was a great success for us as we had many
enquiries about learning lacemaking and we handed out a lot if flyers so
hopefully our numbers at the club will increase. They hope to make this an
annual affair as it was such a success.

Thanks for your Christmas greeting I hope you and yours have a Happy Christmas
and a peaceful New Year.

I did exactly what you are planning to do with the new project, I decided to
start with Bucks Point and used Geraldine Stotts book starting at the beginning
and piece by piece gained knowledge of the lace. I think that is the best way
because it gets increasingly harder as you go but it certainly gives you a
great grounding. The practice pieces I trimmed a dolls christening outfit that
I made. ( you can see the doll on my Arachne photos)

 Hi, Sue

The Luton Museum's Lace Dealer's Pattern Book is a series of pages to
which snippets of lace are attached. The dealer would show these pieces,
produced by the women that worked for him, and the customer would pick the
one she wanted and tell how many yards (or pieces, if it's a motif). Then
the dealer would order that amount from the woman who specialized in that
 pattern.

The one at the Luton Museum got some fame when it was raising money to have
the book refurbished. They wanted to remount the lace pieces on archival
board. Arachne was one of the donors, by holding a raffle of prizes donated
by members. After the re-mounting, the museum had a book made of
 photographs of the pages.

[lace] Joining

2015-02-02 Thread Sue Harvey
Having nearly come to the end of a very long term project of a wide tablecloth
edging, I have been contemplating joining it by the overlap method as I have
been told how neat it looks, the problem is I don't know how. Has anyone on
Arachne ever worked this method and knows where can I get instructions?

Alison, I don't know you personally but I have been through caring and nursing
my mother several years ago and know exactly how it takes over your life,
although I didn't regret a minute of it as she worked hard all her life to
bring up six of us it is very tiring as none of us were very young either.
Look forward now to enjoying a well earned rest and make plenty if lace.

the silk ones were beautiful but only woven by very young girls some only
looked about 12 years old but being so young they had lovely smooth skin on

[lace] Raffle

2015-01-30 Thread Sue Harvey
Just been having a bit of a sort out and found a pattern for a cross stitch
lacemaker called Dorothy I made this several years ago and it's hanging in
my workroom, if you want to see a photo of the chart I have down loaded it to
our photo stream. So anyone who wants to join in the raffle just send me your
details and I will get DH to draw it on 7th Feb to give the ones who only have
the digest a chance to participate.

[lace] uploading photos of Lace Day

2015-03-09 Thread Sue Harvey
Help needed please. Has the uploading procedure of photos to Arachne
changed? Its been a while since I uploaded any photos and it seems to have
changed. I cannot remember having to register with Yahoo previously and they
insist on a mobile no being given, and I do not give my mobile no to anyone
but family and close friends because I get fed up with unsolicited calls.
Is there any other way I can add photos to my current album without
registering?

[lace] Norfolk Lacemakers

2015-03-07 Thread Sue Harvey
Have had a wonderful lace day at the Open Academy. The speaker was a lady by
the name of Louise West and the subject was from lace to concrete and boy
did she blow our minds. From taking up lace for City Guilds she progressed
through to design and actually designed some mind blowing concave concrete
panels for a building in Germany I simply cannot explain in an email the things
this young lady has achieved including some fantastic jewellery and many large
pieces that took your breath away . If you get a chance to go to one of her
talks I am sure you would all love it.
Happy bunny tonight with 5 new Stuart Johnson bobbins which are really
beautiful... Oh well we will be raiding the freezer this week as I have spent
the housekeeping lol
Tomorrow I will put on our photo site some of the pictures I took today of our
theme lace I am proud of display plus we had a table for lace graffiti I
painted Bedfordshire lace on a pair of black trainers for my granddaughter as
my contribution. We also had a cup cake pin cushion display which was a
workshop we did at our last meeting, I made 3 which all have been claimed by
members of my family.

This is a message for Janet Theaker ... I have sent this to Arachne as I did

these emails are from a company selling fat busting pills and I am sure she
would not send these to Arachne members.

[lace] Hints and tips

2015-06-16 Thread Sue Harvey
We have a book going at the Norfolk a lacemakers in which anyone can write down
hints and tips that they have found useful, and I wondered if we could do
something like this on Arachne as I have found the book very useful and have
indeed used a few if the tips since. I will kick off with a tip that I find
useful, and that is after working the complete spider remove the centre pin and
smooth down threads until the hole disappears you will be surprised at the
difference it makes to the neatness off the spider.
