Re: [lace] General Fans Information
Hallo Barbara and all spiders, I saw some wonderful fan sticks at the Birmingham lace fair last year made by Malcolm Cox and I know he is going to be there again this Christmas fair, he also makes the most beautiful mother of pearl fansticks ( very expensive but believe me if I had the spare cash I would have those) I do not have his website but I expect at least one spider will have. I am also making the Bucks fan by Bridget Cook it is lovely to work and I am really enjoying it. I think I'm finally skilled enough to try a Bucks fan, for which I have the instructions, pricking, etc. (1) Do you know where I could obtain nice fan sticks? I would appreciate any recommentdations for woodworkers, and especially if anyone has a lead on mother-of-pearl fanstick makers. (2) Do they make fansticks custom-ordered to fit the size of the lace? I can't imagine how else one would be sure to get sticks the right size. (3) Are there reference publications that give instructions on how to mount the lace onto the fan sticks? Hallo Cary and all spiders, Cary, I do hope you will participate in the exchange and not let it put you off, although I will be making bobbin lace I do not care one hoot about what type of lace I receive in return, after all it is the thought that counts surely. Instead of criticism, I received praise and encouragement and made a very dear friend in Australia that I still keep in contact with. The thought of someone being disappointed with my lace is not very appealing, and believe me it takes just as many hours (or more) for us newbies than for the more experienced. Although I don't do a lot of needle lace I made a container for mine with a box that Badminton shuttlecocks come in from the sports shop. I cut it so it was 9 long, Padded it slightly and covered it with cotton cover, you need only tuck the ends inside as the cases come with metal ends that snap in so you can pop all the lace, threads etc into either end and snap shut then all is kept clean and tidy. Hi Sherry et all I bought that fan pattern from L J Fountain at a lace day someplace cannot remember where but it says on the pattern that further copies can be purchased from Springetts. [lace] Fashion Passion
I went on Saturday with other members of Norfolk Lacemakers to demonstrate at Norwich Castle in the Fashion Passion show which was a platform for all things fibre and fashion. There were many others doing all sorts, knitting, embroidery, spinning, fashion students, and much much more. We had a lovely day, we sat in the rotunda which overlooked where the medieval musicians and dancers were performing they were very good. Our have a go pillows were much in demand with one lovely little boy who came back three times much to his families surprise. We had many foreign visitors too, several who had never even seen or heard of bobbin lace and they were very interested in learning much more about it. I feel the day was a great success for us as we had many enquiries about learning lacemaking and we handed out a lot if flyers so hopefully our numbers at the club will increase. They hope to make this an annual affair as it was such a success. Re: [lace] Season's Greetings
Thanks for your Christmas greeting I hope you and yours have a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. I did exactly what you are planning to do with the new project, I decided to start with Bucks Point and used Geraldine Stotts book starting at the beginning and piece by piece gained knowledge of the lace. I think that is the best way because it gets increasingly harder as you go but it certainly gives you a great grounding. The practice pieces I trimmed a dolls christening outfit that I made. Robin wrote: Sue wrote: The pattern I bought and used was taken from the Lace Dealers handbook (now have I got that quote right?)Does that mean it was a pattern in a book which people might choose to have made for a particular reason. Hi, Sue The Luton Museum's Lace Dealer's Pattern Book is a series of pages to which snippets of lace are attached. The dealer would show these pieces, produced by the women that worked for him, and the customer would pick the one she wanted and tell how many yards (or pieces, if it's a motif). Then the dealer would order that amount from the woman who specialized in that pattern. The one at the Luton Museum got some fame when it was raising money to have the book refurbished. They wanted to remount the lace pieces on archival board. Arachne was one of the donors, by holding a raffle of prizes donated by members. After the re-mounting, the museum had a book made of photographs of the pages. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Norfolk Lacemakers
Have had a wonderful lace day at the Open Academy. The speaker was a lady by the name of Louise West and the subject was from lace to concrete and boy did she blow our minds. From taking up lace for City Guilds she progressed through to design and actually designed some mind blowing concave concrete panels for a building in Germany I simply cannot explain in an email the things this young lady has achieved including some fantastic jewellery and many large pieces that took your breath away . If you get a chance to go to one of her talks I am sure you would all love it. Happy bunny tonight with 5 new Stuart Johnson bobbins which are really beautiful... Oh well we will be raiding the freezer this week as I have spent the housekeeping lol Tomorrow I will put on our photo site some of the pictures I took today of our theme lace I am proud of display plus we had a table for lace graffiti I painted Bedfordshire lace on a pair of black trainers for my granddaughter as my contribution. We also had a cup cake pin cushion display which was a workshop we did at our last meeting, I made 3 which all have been claimed by members of my family. Re: [lace] Cynthia Voysey
So sorry to hear this sad news, I learnt most of my Honiton from her book A Practical Guide and found it so easy to follow especially her drawings of fillings. Re: [lace] Sukanec za Klekljanje thread for Idrija lace
I simply would not be without my Brenda Paternoster threads book it has saved me pounds over the years because I can quickly see if I can substitute one of the threads in my stash rather than buying new. Re: [lace] Lace makers in Bulgaria?
Thank you Antje, I have just spent an enjoyable afternoon looking at Bistrapisancheva.com . What an inspiration her bobbin lace is, as you said not conventional but beautiful and very different makes me want to branch out and try something vastly different to any lace I have ever made.
