Info-LabVIEW New Host Administrator (was: Let's have election! It is fun:))
Howdy Ya'll, Political Puns Prologue: It has been said that the best form of government is a benign democratic dictatorship, where things generally free-run as long as everyone behaves, and the dictator exercises their absolute authority very infrequently and always to the benefit of those being governed. The fly in the ointment, historically, is finding benign dictators. ;-) I think this list has been blessed by Tom's leadership over the years and I wish him (and our list!) the best. We should be so lucky to get another administrator as fair and stable as Tom has been. Personal Opinions: HOSTING: I favor hosting the list with an institution, not an individual. The hosting of the list should be officially sanctioned and supported by the institution, with clear guidelines as to succession should the Administrator pass on or resign. In addition, a couple (a few? ... but not a lot!) of official mirrors should be set up at other institutions to preserve list continuity and integrity. FORMATS: I favor text only, with URL's to attachments. i.e. you can post ONLY text messages (no HTML), but include attachments in your post to the List Server. The Server does not pass the attachments on to the subscribers, instead it stores the attachment(s) (and virus scans!) and substitutes a URL. That way the bandwidth stays lean and readable, while providing a simple method of optionally exchanging (or ignoring) binary data. People can still easily parse/search digests, etc, I would be surprised if open source tools PHP don't already exist for this and also provide a separate web page to allow for and track threads. Michael Porter Porter Consulting, LLC. ... after all He's not a tame lion... I guess my vote would fall on the side of maintaining the basic functionality the same (low-bandwidth). If somebody needs a way of posting examples of code or such there are at least two other LabVIEW-specific channels for that sort of traffic. Mike... ( Sorry in advance to all the international list reader who probably won't get this joke, but... ) I heard a rumor somewhere that there are many world leaders who have privately told Michael A. that they hope he takes over the list... Hey, the tame lion is back on the list! Thank you for joining again. I missed your enlightening contributions. My vote for future info-labview goes to Scott Hannahs, if he is willing to dedicate his precious time fto our and the Igor list. It would be a matter of not giving everything away and out of the originators hands. Tom will have to decide to who he wants to hand the service with all the responsibilities over. Whatever solution will be chosen, the list should by no means be split up again. We should avoid parallelism as is already the case with NI's comp.lang. To have an independent source and the free exchange of ideas and information is a vital part of the flourishing LabVIEW culture. I prefer the plain regular individual text mail messages, which can be downloaded within a very short time, then read and responded locally offline to fire out the replies afterwards when some internet connection becomes available again. Not being forced to stay connected to the net all the time has its advantages, specially if you are on the road on some LabVIEW assignment in a remote area of the globe. Happy wireworks Urs

Michael, Here's another vote for plain text. In addition to Scott's font problem and Urs' bandwidth problem (my OFFICE connection is dial-up because Verizon has trouble delivering even reliable voice service to our neighborhood), I have disabled pictures to avoid the occasional explicit ad and I archive snippets from the forum in a text only format that currently runs 22 Mbyte. -- EnWirementally, Paul F. Re: Let's have election! It is fun:)
Funny,... Seriously, the final choice I guess will be Tom's as he indicated. Whatever the decision, I will go along of course. And I think we all agree that one list is the final goal. As far as adding features such as attachments and HTML, this is a major change from the previous operation. The capability is already there in the new location i'm proposing. It is just a checkbox I click on. The question is should we do that? Many people like the existing format because it requires very little bandwidth. So, i think if a change to the behaviour is required, we can take a poll and let the members decide. Like I said, the capability is there and we can switch this on in the future if necessary. For now, the primary goal is to get to a stable server. So... do I sound like a politician? ;-) Quoting Michael Porter [EMAIL PROTECTED]: ( Sorry in advance to all the international list reader who probably won't get this joke, but... ) I heard a rumor somewhere that there are many world leaders who have privately told Michael A. that they hope he takes over the list... Re: Let's have election! It is fun:)
No this is not politician speak. And all joking aside, I also am sure that we want one list. Adding features just because it is possible is not always a win situation. Personally, I like the text only format. Otherwise I get email in someone's favorite font that shows up in an unreadble color and very very tiny for my rendering engine. (or a big bold color and HUGE characters) Font specifications are not cross application much less cross platform. Attachments are allowable right now with a single check box option in the software. BUT that is a big problem! One is the obvious virus danger, but the other is that some of us read this list at home over phone lines and in-line graphics and attachments just clog things up. My attachments folder is already full of things that belong there and LOTS of things that should go away! I agree with Michael that we should first get a stable server and then think about changes. But I don't want to leave some of the less technically enabled people behind. I really encourage people to put attachments up on a web site and reference them. I think this could be done with an open upload area. But that just invites problems as well. The only way to prevent mangled attachments from getting thru the list and onto us is by restricting size of a message. Also the double opt-in registration, members only posting and message size limitation all work to keep this list spam and virus free! (Michael, give me a call and we can talk about it) -Scott At 3:37 PM + 3/18/04, = Michael Aivaliotis = wrote: Seriously, the final choice I guess will be Tom's as he indicated.
