Totaling sub-postings with ledger-mode

2020-07-26 Thread Ben Hancock

Hi folks,

This is a question about using ledger-mode within Emacs. I use Ledger
with virtual accounts for envelope-style budgeting. At the beginning of
the month, I'll typically make an entry that looks something like this:

2020-07-01 * Budget: July 2020
[Budget:Food]$100.00
[Budget:Gas] $25.00
[Budget:Books]$25.00
[Assets:Checking] -$150.00

Now, the mental math in the above example is easy enough, but
unfortunately my real budget is typically more complex. I'm aware that I
can elide the bottom posting, but I find its helpful to see how much I'm
actually budgeting as I make my allocations for the month.

Is there a handy function available within ledger-mode to total up all
the "Budget" postings and insert the correct inverse amount for the
posting at bottom? I've checked the docs but not found anything (or have
overlooked the relevant section). I've also tried
"ledger-post-edit-amount" -- bound to "C-c C-b" -- and while this pops
open calc to let /me/ do the math, I'd love for the calculation to be
done for me.

Thanks!

Ledger account names with other languages

2020-07-26 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Ledger doesn't prescribe an account structure, so I know that some
people use their native language for ledger top-level accounts,
e.g. Actif instead of Assets in French, or Einnahmen (I guess?)
for Income in German.

If you use such account names and they are standard for your
country/language, can you email me off-list at t...@cyrius.com
with the 5 top-level accounts in your language and what language
it's for.

I'm trying to compile a mapping between the 4 top-level accounts
in various languages to English for ledger2beancount.

Thanks,

Does anyone have any hints for separating business and provate finances?

2020-07-26 Thread Marcin Borkowski
Hi all,

I've been using Ledger for more than 5 years now (GnuCash earlier), and
I'm pretty happy with it. However, I have now a challenge. Instead of
a regular salary, I get payments for invoices, which are not equal each
month. This is inconvenient from a private budget perspective. I've
set up a separate business account at my bank and I plan to set up
a constant monthly transfer from that account to my private one, maybe
even called "salary". (Of course, I will ensure that my average monthly
business income is greater than the "salary".)

I would like to separate these two areas in Ledger, too. Ideally, I'd
like to be able to see a "private" report, a "business" report or
a "total" report.

Any hints?

TIA,
