Re: [LU] West Brom
My only caveat to your usual excellent report, Dave, would be that Costa did not hit the ball straight at the keeper. For chances like that, the thing to do is just twat it hard at the middle of the net, and that's what he did..but the keeper managed to get up and somehow get in the way in what is one of the best saves I've seen for a long long while. It was a shame, because a goal then would have done us & Costa a huge amount of good, but personally I credit the keeper and do not blame Costa. [LU] West Brom
As I posted beforehand there is an odd atmosphere around Leeds at present after 2 poor results and the mood in the pub was mixed- a bit of 'we will be fine and relishing the game' but mixed with 'we can't defend especially set pieces, and where on earth are our goals coming from?' We started well, even if not quite the goal in 40 seconds of last season, and it looked like being a typical performance, keep the ball, create and waste half chances. However we then got the bit of luck we needed and deserved as a shot cum cross from Alioski, which was going wide was deflected in off Bartley. A first 'assist' of the season for Harrison who played the ball to Alioski The crowd of over 34k went wild. Easy to forget that for a midweek game we used to hope to get over 20k , I saw Wigan hull and Blackburn all got less than 15k last night. We continued to press and then on the stroke of half time we did our "usual" somehow failing to put the ball in the net from 5yds twice- give the keeper some credit but really we need to score those, first Bamfords little flick from inside the 6yd box was parried and then Costa fired the rebound straight at the keeper. 2 up at half time snd it would have bee game over, instead we were left ruing the missed opportunities and having to defend that slender lead. Shackleton who had been having his best game of the season joined Cooper on the injury list and suddenly, a game we were largely in control of turned on its head They began to dominate and even stranger we just couldn't keep the ball. Time and time again we gave away possession and let them come onto us with plenty of skill. Our defence, despite conceding fewer goals than almost anyone is viewed as our Achilles heel, but yesterday they stayed strong and were reminiscent, at times, of the Monk team of a few years back. They caused us some problems especially the small lad with the afro but to be honest, I actually felt reasonably confident that we would hold out, and despite a few shredded nerves, hold out we did without too many scares. Attacking wise we were almost non existent second half apart from one moment that perfectly summed up Jack Harrison, he beat 2 men dribbling inside the area, brilliant, but just as he was about to shoot or put in a dangerous cross he fell over the ball and let it trickle out for a goal kick! So in some ways an odd game , as others have said only the 2nd time we have had less possession than our opponents but really solid backs to the wall defending, defending that many of us did not think we were capable of. Most importantly 3 points against a good team who will be right up there, a clean sheet and the first home win since August, it could prove to be the turning point of our season in some ways as we ret9to the top of the table. Of course ,as always, we need to build on it starting with millwall away, a game that is never easy for us as they raise their game in their cup final but I am reasonably confident I thought white was excellent again, pontus who? Shackleton looked the part and I hope his injury is minor, Bamford really put a shift in as they say and deserved the man of the match but needs to score, a John Pearson/ Alan Smith non scoring centre forward is only ok if there is someone alongside them banging them in. Costa first half showed he does indeed have special ability and a decent run in the team should see him prove his worth. Also nice to see Ayling back So, all in all a great night, a good game with a good atmosphere and 3 points Dave Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: https://mailman.gn.apc.org/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org Find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/leedslist/ RIP Jimmy WAC-COE
Re: [LU] WBA
Feeling a bot ropey this morning - 6 pints and a pie on a school night. Can't do that anymore. My thoughts are that it was good to see us digging out a win especially the 2nd half rather than having 70+% of possession, dominating and then conceding a late goal. We were never allowed to play our own game against a lively but in my opinion average Baggies team. Again we saw big gaps in our midfield as Klich went wandering and Philips was left struggling against pace. Shackleton was left to do a lot of work and he did. It was his best 45 minutes in a Leeds shirt and it was a shame he got injured because he was keeping us alive. Second half he was replaced by Roberts and we struggled. West Brom took control and it only seemed like a matter of time before they equalised. Bielsa then subbed the sub when he realised that Roberts wasn't working as a number 10 so we saw Ayling come on a right back and Dallas moved to centre midfield no doubt to use his pace in tracking some very lively Baggies midfielders (especially the guy with the hair), but it was pretty shocking to see Dallas didn't have a clue what to do in midfield - he was totally lost. Incredible really. This meant we had to hang on and play on the occassional break. Overall, this was a great win against an unbeaten team. Being realistic, I think if we're looking to play with 2 wingers then our starting midfield Shackleton, Klich and Philips isn't good enough for promotion. Kiko - 7. Some good saves to keep us in it. Dallas - 5. I thought for the first time for a while he looked like a right winger playing at right back. He was terrorised and you saw that he is not a natural defender. Completely lost it 2nd half. Allioski - 6. Also thought he struggled defensively throughout the night but he did get the winner. Was there a deflection ? Cooper - 6. Got injured as he always does and now we'll see whether the decision not to get another centre back was a good one ? White - 8. I thought he held the patched up defence together at times and also did ok with the ball moving forward much more effectively than Philips did. Philips - 4. I think he's struggled last few games. West Brom were pacey and he lost possession a few times as he was not allowed to play his casual, deliberate play that he likes. I still maintain that as well as Philips has done he's not good enough to be the main man in a team looking for promotion and that is mainly down to his lack of pace and acceleration. Completely ineffective last night. Shackleton - 8. My man of the match even though he only played 45 mins. Was a one man midfield at times. Klich - 5. Continuing his poor run of form. He runs a lot but his output is nothing. Has forgotten how to shoot. Costa - 8. Had a poor game against CHarlton but had his best game last night. Looked dangerous and one or two good efforts. Harrison - 5. Someone on Twitter gave him man of the match ?? Yes he probably sees more of the ball than anyone, yes he gets himself into some great positions but almost without fail he messes up with the final ball. in the 2nd half last night he dribbled his way brillaintly into the box and only had the keeper in front of him. He nearly tripped over himself and ran the ball out for a goalkick. Incredible. Bamford - 7. Worked hard. Everyone going completely OTT though in my opinion. Never looked like scoring. I'd give Eddie a start. Subs: Ayling - 7. Did what was needed. Roberts - 3. Didn't do what was needed and got subbed. someone else came on but I can't remember who it was. Milwall next ... Re: [LU] WBA
Yes - it was a really good win, at home - especially after letting in late goals against Swansea and Derby. Although it was a tense last 30 minutes, it was a great match to watch and the atmosphere was top notch! WBA are the best side we've seen this season, and it seemed quite strange not to have the lion's share of possession - is that the first time under Bielsa? And listening to Bielsa's interview on the way home, he said the the Roberts substitution was tactical as their shape had changed after he came on and he needed to change things again. no reflection on Roberts himself. So maybe there is plan B! Ted H On Wed, 2 Oct 2019 at 09:00, John Lee via Leedslist wrote: > It was a good match Nick, and for the first time in a while I thought we’d > hold out at the back.
