Which Calderon? Who does he manage at the moment?

If it were up to me, whether or not we go down, I'd have a deep talk with Jesse
about what he plans to do with the squad, who he thinks he needs, and what
style of play he wants to establish. Based on his answers, I might give him
until the end of September to show he can turn things around. If he can't, or
if his answers to the previous questions don't convince, I'd hope like hell
that Huddersfield don't quite make it up via the playoffs and then nick
Corberan to manage a squad that's still got a lot of the players he knows from
his years at the club.

The handling of Bielsa from day one was wrong.
If what we are told is true, namely small squads and buying. He should have the
last word but not the only word.
So the small squad- injury plague was not just on Bielsa. It was not a sacking
offense; it was clear at Xmas it was going wrong. Strangely, it was very
convenient for a shallow pocketed management to hear.
Bielsa's alternative is a Hockaday with a different accent.
It is as clear that he is not the answer. He has been here long enough to know
that nothing from Bielsa will be left.
He will not get us up, he's clueless. He won't improve anything or anybody.
Get in Calderon or get Bielsa to be part of the selection process.
We must get the Bielsa Continuation right. And it is not with this absolute
dreck Marsch.

Desperate stuff

With each passing week i am less clear what we are trying to achieve
Four centre-backs started today with Rapha at right wing back just in
case that wasnt enough.

Koch managed to play centre-back, right back and right wing in the same
game. Even popped up at centre-forward for a bit.
Firpo sort of wandered around midfield.

We are not going to pressure the other team into a mistake if they are;
1) Not Watford or Norwich and
2) We only have ten men

But that seems to be our attacking plan - we appear to have no clue how
to move the ball from back to front when in possession.

The single redeeming feature was Watfords draw.
The players look lost, the club is drifting, the previous three years’
effort going up in smoke.
Fuck sake.

[LU] The red cards

2022-05-12 Thread Robert Heath
It is tempting to say that Ayling & James were just taking Marsch's
instructions that "das ist nicht ein fucking freundlichspiel" a little too
far. (That was nicked from The Square Ball, sorry.)

But I do think there were, if not extenuating circumstances, at least
underlying reasons for both mad tackles.

Sad to say it, but at least some of the blame for Ayling's has to go to the
Leeds fans! There they all were, in their loyal loud thousands as always,
200 mls from home, struggling to pay their bills but still finding a way to
get thereand Leeds were already 0-2 down and had gifted one of
the goals to bloody Nketiah..and there right in front of the fans
was the wriggly bastard who had been running Ayling ragged and had set up
the 2nd goal...the outcome was inevitable really. So many "pundits"
said :"What was he thinking?" I think it was a clear (although probably
misguided) risk and reward situation: the risk was that he overdid the
thing a little and would get a red card, but the reward if he managed to
pull off a fair but clattering challenge in that very corner of the ground
would have been huge; a massive roar from the Leeds fans who would get even
more behind the team and a boost to the rest of the side seeing their
captain was not going down without a fight. Worth the risk? In the heat of
the moment when he had to decide in a split second? I don't know, but me
I'm not condemning him.

As for James, I think his challenge was a result of simmering resentment
over the failure of the ref to even penalise let alone sanction the Chelsea
player who had taken him out a few mins earlier when he was free and
heading for goal. I'm pretty sure that was the same ref who was atrocious
in the game v Soton a few weeks ago.and who didn't give us a
penalty when Gelhardt was felled in the box at the end. This one was so
obviously a foul. Why would James dive there...to exchange a clear
one v one against the keeper for a nothing freekick in the middle of the
park?

Similar views about not wanting to watch this any more - do we have to go down
to get rid of Marsch, who is like some over-enthusiastic snake-oil peddler!
It’s not all down to him, but he’s making it worse. Just hoping we don’t let
him invest in players over the summer. I wonder what Leipzig saw in him in 5
months to get rid? Maybe what we’re seeing? He is way, way out of his depth!

All that said, the players are all over the place too - frustrated as hell,
ineffective, and about to get relegated unless something very bizarre, and
frankly, undeserved happens.

Yes Rodrigo ... you can blame the manager for poor tactics but when you're
losing every battle and putting your team under pressure with every misplaced /
poor backwards pass then that aint going to help.
He was so poor.

Agree totally Dave, it was poor. I didn't get a ticket and can't say I'm too
upset by that.
I think Marsch had an impossible job in trying to reengineer the team after
Bielsa but you have to say that what he is doing is clueless. Playing with 3
wingers but yet not playing down the wings and trying to play through midfield
when we don't have one ! or should I say, we don't have a mobile one. Bielsa
got that and he wasn't fussed to buy midfielders because he created the perfect
role for Philips and all his play was down the flanks. Bate and Philips
yesterday against a dymanic, pacey Chelsea midfield was actually very
embarrassing. It was the mismatch of the century. It's clear that Philips can't
play in a free midfield, he doesn't have the pace or the creativity and Bate is
just a young lad. We've also got Raphinha hel;ping out in defence and taking
long throw-ins and Jack Harrison doesn't know what the fuck he's doing. These
tactics were supposed to make us more solid but they don't and Chelsea could
have had double figures. Who said that Marsch was the ideal replacement for
Bielsa because he plays similar - that was obviously nonsense. It's all very
depressing but I would suggest some drastic action by sacking Marsch today and
putting Jackson in for the final two games. If nothing else we might get a
reaction and also it looks like the team will have a few U-23s in on Sunday.

I want any Leeds manager to do well but I really think Marsch is totally

Re: [LU] Chelsea

2022-05-12 Thread Nick
no shots on goal

Raph and Rodrigo hardly ever got the ball facing the opposition goal

No one got behind the Chelsea defence - overlapping runs down the wings or
through the middle

this 4-2-2-2 - play it narrow system - seems to forget that the middle of the
pitch is usually the most heavily populated bit of the pitch. You can’t just
waltz through it.

There seems to be some idea that the ball will go wide, someone will peel off
and flick it back inside to a team mate running up the middle…it doesn’t work.

For pretty much the first time in 4 years, I wondered why I bothered going - i
had little hope before hand, and zero coming away. We were given joy through
football under Bielsa and its gone, well and truly. Our main hope now lies on
Burnley managing to secure minus points from a game.

Stay up or go down, anyone good in that squad will leave.

Phillips looked absolutely lost yesterday. Admittedly some of it may be down to
fitness, I’m not convinced he is fully recovered.
