SAFE HAVEN presented by KEEP LEFT THEATRE
Safe Haven traces the refugee experience of flight from terror in leaky
boats to the shores of Australia and on to the detention camps. This is
not the story of a refugee, but of how the Howard Government used this
refugee crisis for their own sordid political ends.
The show blends the drama of the refugees with scenes of the pollies,
which produces very funny satire.
Written by Frank Otis and Directed by Chris Gaffney, the same team that
brought you the very successful S11 - The Dividing Line.

KEEPER OF THE FAITH - A BIOGRAPHY OF JIM CAIRNS by PAUL STRANGIO
*LAUNCH*
presented by The New International Bookshop Melbourne University Press

Until recently, Jim Cairns was a familiar sight around the markets of
Melbourne, seated at a table stacked with copies of his latest book. It
seems an unlikely occupation for a man who was once the major thinker
and driving force of the Labor Party Left, and who reached the positions
of Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer in Australia's most reformist
government under Gough Whitlam.
But Cairns was never a conventional politician. In this mature and
sophisticated biography, Paul Strangio reveals a consistent thread
running through the apparent contradictions of Cairns' public career, as
well as drawing a compelling picture of the inner man.
Both highly readable and carefully researched, Keeper of the Faith
reassesses the part Cairns played in shaping Australian public life.
Drawing on a rich range of archival and oral sources, this is a masterly
portrait of one of those rare people who never stop in their search for
truth.
