THE CANDLE LIGHT WALK HAS AN ON-LINE FLYER AT:
http://www.country-liberal-party.com/pages/adelaidemob.htm - [there are
companion sites at: http://peaceliberation.tripod.com/index1.htm and
http://peaceliberation.tripod.com/pages/intro.htm ]

Just a reminder that the 39th Candle Light Walk for Justice & Peace is
on Friday 6 June, 2003, in Adelaide - starting at ex-daylight saving
time: walkers gather from 6.45pm for a 7.15pm start. Feel free to use
the item in italics below as a template for your publicity for the
Justice & Peace Candle Light Walk in support of a Treaty & Bill of
Rights.

JUSTICE & PEACE CANDLIGHT WALK: "Australians can show their support for
a treaty with Australia's Indigenous peoples. Candles will be lit for
justice and peace advocating an Indigenous treaty on Friday 6 June,
2003, and every following first Friday of the month throughout 2003.
Walkers can gather with candles at Government House from 6.45.PM for a
7.15PM start. The walk aims to protect Ngarrindjeri culture, spiritual
beliefs, lands and waters, to stop any nuclear waste dump on traditional
lands, and from affecting the environment via a Treaty & Bill of
Rights."

Candle Light Walks are held in Adelaide at Genocide Corner in front of
Government House on the first Friday of the month. These walks express
the concern of those who wish justice for Indigenous peoples. There's an
opportunity to listen to Ngarrindjeri, and other Indigenous Elders speak
on issues affecting their people.

The microphone remains open for anyone to offer their thoughts on
current issues, to sing a song, or to share stories of struggle. Please
feel free to attend, and show support for a Treaty with Indigenous
people, a Bill of Rights, justice and peace, as well as opposition to
any nuclear dump in South Australia.

Another monthly Candle Light Walk is to begin in Sydney, and soon Candle
Light Walks in other States may follow. Don't worry if it will just be a
small group of you to start with as Vincent Lingiari said: "from
little things big things grow" ! Respect Indigenous people's traditional
land and waters. Light a candle and walk for justice and peace. Join the
Indigenous call for a TREATY.

Respect Indigenous rights. Recognise Ngarrindjeri culture and spiritual
beliefs. Look after the Coorong and its wildlife. Protect this unique
Australian wetland. Look after Lake Eyre. Conserve this unique cultural
environment. Protect its cattle and tourist industries.

NO SOUTH AUSTRALIAN NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP

marketing and front of house.

"Dreaming Dreams" Director, Nick Illia, said the students incorporated still
image, text, music, projected words and live performance into a rich collage
in the four pieces that make up the performance.

He promised a powerful piece with performers drawing their inspiration
from the environment, war, relationships, greed and indigenous issues.

2003-06-02 Thread AAWL
Public meeting:

Tuesday 3 June at 6 pm
Evatt Room, Trades Hall
54 Victoria Street Carlton South

Malaysian labour activist Tian Chua has been in jail for two years.
He was jailed without trial under the Internal Security Act because he
organised for workers' rights.

Tian's detention is now being reviewed. This is a critical time for all
workers and union to demand his release.

Come to the public meeting to hear Zaitun Toni Kassim from Suaram
Malaysia report on the international campaign to free Tian.

Zaitun Toni Kassim is a long time women's rights and democratic rights
activist in Malaysia. She was also an opposition candidate against the
Mahathir government at the last Malaysian federal elections.

At this meeting there will also be a report by Piergiorgio Moro on the
10th Anniversary commemoration of the Kader toy factory fire held on 10
May in Bangkok.

Piergiorgio was the AAWL delegate to the commemoration and attended the
health & safety meetings and protests held in Bangkok to mark ten years
since the tragedy in which 188 workers died because of the negligence of
the company. This report is part of our continuing support for right of
workers in the Asia Pacific region to demand health & safety in their

LL:AA: URGENT support for ABC needed

2003-06-02 Thread Shute, Carmel
URGENT- ABC needs the support of those who value ABC scrutiny on
important public matters.

4Corners program re Woomera
Please read below and send this email on to others who appreciate the
ABC's role in scrutinising government, investigating and bringing full
information to the public, and who understand that government
interference with the independence of the ABC is an affront to
democracy. Then send an email and/or phone to give your feedback on the
program:
Send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
with a copy to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Phone: 9626 1699 and ask to leave a message on the General Comments Line

There appears to be a concerted campaign being run to stop programs
providing information about asylum seekers. After the 4Corners program
on Woomera, apparently the ABC has been inundated with negative comments
demanding that the ABC stop showing these biased programs. It would some
people are unhappy that the ABC had access to the footage it used.

As always, those who appreciate what the program exposed are not the
ones who are contacting the ABC. So pls, get cracking in support of the
ABC's efforts. And phone/write to the media to oppose the current
Government assault on the ABC's independence.
