I think its done with a template after you make it perfectly square.

Still sitting here thinking about it

If the cross section was small enough, ithink it could be done with a
flute bit and cut it from the sidebut what if you want a 6 or
bigger square cross section?

Cole
What kind of template were you thinking about? I don't follow.

Hello
You need to use a straight cutter and cut form the side.pretty much like a
normal rope but... its very wasteful type of cutting and you realy eat up
the size of the meteral very quickly, You need to keep the cutting the same
on all four sides, if not you will end up with what they call a ribbon
twist.

My suggestion is to try it on some scrap wood first.

Good luck.

Woops! one more note. I think the suggestion of using a template, Just might
be a good one. as long as you use the template to make sure the edges are
all the same.

Ive not done it that way, but it dose sound like a good idea to me.

post some pictures, Win,lose or draw. Please let us know how it turned out?

I still don't follow the template idea. Wouldn't you just use the

  You can mill it from the top.
  All you have to do is figure your pitch, lets say 12 then lets say you have
an 8 stock with a taper to 5 along a 36 length. Use the tilt of the machine
to make the taper. Use a corebox bit to accomplish the cut. Now you will need
to round off the stock. Your 8 stock will only yield a 5-5/8 square down to
3-1/2. Set your corebox bit 2-13/16 from center of the large end. Now move
the bit off center to where you aren't taking off too much wood. It is just
fine to mill both directions with this cut. Make the cut and move the bit
towards center 1/16 of an inch and cut again. Move 1/16 go back
~~~ until you are out of wood.  Rotate the piece 90º using the
drive dogs and mill the next side.  It is going to take a while but the smaller
cuts will give you a better finish.  Use the corebox for this and not the
bottom planing bit.  When you are finished you will be able to drop a square
across any section of the leg and it will be true.  It will look concave but
the square won't lie.
Re: square spirals?
2011-07-12 Thread Tim Krause
This is a pretty good concept.  Mike is saying to remove small portions at a
time to create as large of a flat spot as you would like.  Here's my diagram
that might explain what he was describing.
By varying the bits and spacing you could do four flat side twists with coves
in the flat sides... at least I think you could.
Re: square spirals?
2011-07-12 Thread Andy
Thanks for posting the pictures of the spiral Mike. That was exactly
what i was talking about. I like the method of stepping the core box
bit over in small increments to make the square profile. For smaller
pieces, you could use the flute bit method and cut from the side. but
for the larger cross sections, it looks like the only option is what
you describe above. I really want to try it when i get back home to
see how it turns out.
Thanks everyone!
