RE: Milling cutters

2019-07-30 Thread Tim Krause
Curt uses them. Mostly for jobs that require a long length.  Curt's out of town
for a little while so you won't hear from him any time soon.

Now in a pinch, I've been known to do the opposite and use a two flute carbide
or hss to mill aluminum NOT on the legacy, but on my mill.  I've also used hss
two flute cutters on delrin.

The old machinist will tell you that hss can have a sharper edge than carbide,
but with some of the newer micro grain carbides they can match the level of
sharpness. Carbide is very easy to damage if you drop one on the floor they
will most likely chip. Hss in the same drop might get a tiny dent that can be
sharpened while the carbide could new special tooling to sharpen that most wood
workers don't have unless they are really into sharpening their own tools.

That's my initial thoughts folks.

RE: Milling cutters

2019-07-30 Thread bulkeley
I like them for one of jobs they are cheap to buy you can with a bit of skill
resharpen or grind a certain shape.

They don’t last anywhere near as long as carbide and you have to run them
slower but they are cheaper to buy
