Good morning Richard.

As a general rule of thumb, the best looking ropes are 3-4 x the dia. of the
work piece. So your 1.25 (1 1/4") spindle should have 6" or 5"pitch. But this
is just a rule of thumb, there are no rules that you have to use.

Bills suggestion of using a core box bit would work as well as a roping or
barley bit, or even a "V" bit, would also work well. all depending on the look
you want.

Wish you luck. Cant wait to see how it turns out for you.

spiral would work as a support I should think. With out a support it might be
very difficult to mill . good luck please take pics when you finish it.

Bill, It is 11/4 inches I have just found a WEALDON cutter T7732 that is for
true barley twists for 41 mm dia round wood. I may have to try to give it a
sharpen!! When I asked about using a straight cutter I would have to have
worked out how to step by indexing and then a lot of sanding!!

I have been asked to make a Rope molding light/ lamp stem 13 inches tall by
about 1/14 dia. Is it possible to use a straight 1/2 inch cutter to cut from
the side

Or if not what cutter do I need?

Thanks

When trying to find the best way to mail the rotary table to Brigitte in

As you see the drill bit is very different form what we use on
the Legacy. I'm not sure, but I do not think this type of cutter
would be safe on a router? But I do have some idea's on ways to
modify an old router bit (I'm talking HHS, not carbide) to make
the a profile that might do the same type of cut as his drill bit
dose.
My plan is to buy a set of diamond bur bits.

https://www.amazon.com/DerBlue-50-Piece-Diamond-Gemstones-Lapidary/dp/B01M0J8E29/ref=sr_1_25?crid=E5DWIRE2EO3Y=1=diamond+bur+set=1603580230=diamond+bur+%2Caps%2C186=8-25

and use these to re-shape the bit to the button profile like what
you see.

also like to take a try?
At the very least its something to think about. ;-)

2020-10-25 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
One more note.If you use a 1 1/2" pitch your spindle will look like an All
thread rod, Not very attractive,  If I were making it, I would try a 4" pitch
with three starts. and using a 1" roping bit.
As I said there are no RULES you have to follow. Play around with different
cuts until you find one you like.

Re: Rope molding

2020-10-25 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Good morning Richard. As a general rule of thumb, the best looking ropes are
3-4 x the dia. of the work piece. So your 1.25 (1 1/4") spindle should have 6"
or 5"pitch.  But this is just a rule of thumb, there are no rules that you have
to use.  Bills suggestion of using a core box bit would work as well as a
roping or barley bit, or even a "V" bit, would also work well. all depending on
the look you want.Wish you luck. Cant wait to see how it turns out for you.

spiral would work as a support I should think. With out a support it might be
very difficult to mill . good luck please take pics when you finish it.
