Re: Question for all Legacy owners on gears?

2022-12-26 Thread Tim Ziegler
yeah plastic gears are usually made of a nylon plastic, but maybe UHMW
would be a good alternative.
Good thing it's in the testing stages. right?

Will the plastic hold up is the key thing? ,plastic gears are usually made of
a strong plastic I believe

Not sure plexiglass will work lots of testing to do on this one

Thank you Denson.

I plan to do some testing on this gears. First as a coupler for a DC Motor,
Much like Bill did.

And if the plastic holds up??? Then perhaps something more. It would be neat
to be able to reproduce all the gear sets. But that WAY beyond my scope of
this idea and, to be honest with everyone, My ability's to do it at this time.

Denson you have an 900, Correct? Are the gears teeth the same for the drive
gears as the Duplex and indexing plates, on your machine?

Hello Everyone.

I've playing around with a idea. (Its a spin off form Bill's motor mountings
topic.)

I own a Legacy 1000ex. which has the "OLD" gears.(Small toothed gears) (ones
made before Legacy had the use of a laser to make there parts.) the question
is are the drive gears the same domestic pitch? (gear tooth thickness) as the
indexing gears?

Today's project was to make a gear set/coupling gear like Bill has made, but
out of plastic's. I have no idea on how well it will (or will Not.) work, Yet.

But this idea has made me think about the Gear problem many of our newer uses
are running into when buying second hand machines, that is Gears are missing.

today I figured out the Domestic pitch, and was able to make a few gears out of
Plexiglas that mate up to the larger tooth sets on the newer X2 gear set that I
own.

If all goes well, It could be possible to re-produce any missing gear needed by
any of our group.

Please do not ask me to sell or make any thing, for anyone at this time. This
is Stickley R stuff .

If everything works out, then we "ALL" may be able to profit on the experience
learned from this Venture.

Re: Question for all Legacy owners on gears?

2022-12-26 Thread Tim Ziegler
Plastic may be ok alternative but keep in mind Legacy still makes the gear
sets. anyone wanting metal ones really should consider getting them
ordered, as who knows how long they will keep making them. And one still
can get some plastic gears too.

Re: Question for all Legacy owners on gears?

2022-12-26 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Thank you Denson.
I plan to do some testing on this gears. First as a coupler for a DC Motor,
Much like Bill did.
And if the plastic holds up??? Then perhaps something more.  It would be neat
to be able to reproduce all the gear sets.  But that WAY beyond my scope of
this idea and, to be honest with everyone, My ability's to do it at this time.
Denson you have an 900, Correct? Are the gears teeth the same for the drive
gears as the Duplex and indexing plates, on your machine?

One nice element of this machine is being able to dis-engage the headstock and

The legacy is a far superior machine by far, right from the start your not
limited to just one spiral pitch.

(pitch is the distance the router bit travels with one 360 degree rotation of
the work) for any that don’t know

They definately are interesting. I have a never used one still with original
packaging/box in my workshop. I was going to extend distance between centers
to use it, but the limitations in working distance are because of the wire drum
that is used to move the sled. without a major re-construct you are limited to
about 28in of working length which is a problem for my primary intended use.
That is what has me considering a legacy mill.

Re: router crafter

2022-12-26 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Very Nice Video!
One nice element of this machine is being able to dis-engage the headstock and
index the part. I wish Legacy had thought of that, when making there machine!
The quality of this video is very nice. NO words, but they get there point
across, and still keep the info. fun to watch.

Re: router crafter

2022-12-26 Thread Mike Newman
They definately are interesting. I have a never used one still with
original packaging/box in my workshop. I was going to extend distance
between centers to use it, but the limitations in working distance are
because of the wire drum that is used to move the sled. without a major
re-construct you are limited to about 28in of working length which is a
problem for my primary intended use. That is what has me considering a
legacy mill.

Great Video Bill,

I actually almost bought one of those one time.

I think for a cheap piece of equipment it had some serious potential.

I am supposed to be able to do some spirals on the Vega duplicator but

Pretty neat set up.

I see no reason why something like this would not work on the Legacy.

After all, If you think about it all you would need is a cam/ lever, and a
pointer to move the Y axis. and perhaps a better template holder?

Just something to think about.
