RE: New live center for my 200

2023-06-26 Thread M.W.Foscue
Bill,

We mostly use "cycles" - but on rare occasion, you will see Hz. On electric
appliances, motors, etc. you will see one or the other.

As for voltage, I see our lower voltage mentioned as any of these: 110, 115, or
120.
And I see our higher household voltage usually mentioned as either 220 or 240.
(Never seen mention of 230v)

When I was growing up (very younger years) in the Panama Canal Zone - I
remember we had 25 cycle electricity. Not sure if it was 110v or something
else. Then one day they had a truck come thru the neighborhood - and families
could swap out their "cycles sensitive" devices - like clocks - for new ones
that ran on 60 cycles. Strange, huh?

Bill,

What juice (mains?) do you run in your house/shop?
Do you have 110 and 220; or only 220 like in Europe?
Many "home shops" in America add 220v AC/60 cycles if they didn't already have
it before outfitting their shop.
What cycle do you have - 50? Or 60 - like here in America?

Thanks.

Hello and good evening everyone.

Sunday's and Mondays are my weekends. But sadly, We had a storm Saturday
evening, which caused a power outage for me, The power was restored appx. 6pm
today. 3 hours in the shop form me over a weekend is NOT normal, And I was
having withdrawal systems. (Yes people my Feet hurt! You see with out
electricity the only way for me to spend my time at home is to walk our dog. We
walked 10 miles today and even more yesterday.) ;-)

OK (sorry guys, I don't mean to cry over spilled milk, so to speak... This
weekend was Horrible! ) ;-p

Today's shop time was meant to turn some bone blanks that I got ready for
turning last weekend.

I did one turning, which turned out pretty good, but after switching form
machines I noticed that the dead center on my 200 was wearing badly.

(Note: the 200 was meant to by turned by hand, the motor I use , is way more
rotations then the dead center was meant to handle.)

I found an old live center that I used on my pedal lathe, (see Bill web site.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpAz-xgLynU )

The live center has a 1/2-24 thread that holds it onto the MT-1 shaft. knowing
this I removed it form its shaft and used a fine thread bolt to mount it onto
my 200. It was a simple matter of drilling out the 3/8" hole that the old dead
center used for its mountings and making it 1/2" then screwing the bolt onto
and in the live center.

Over all this weekend was not a total lost cause.

A new toy and bonding time with our puppy. ;-)

Have a good night everyone.

Today's shop time was meant to turn some bone blanks that I got ready for

I did one turning, which turned out pretty good, but after switching form
machines I noticed that the dead center on my 200 was wearing badly.(Note: the
200 was meant to by turned by hand, the motor I use , is way more rotations

used on my pedal lathe, (see Bill web site.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpAz-xgLynU )The live center has a 1/2-24
thread that holds it onto the MT-1 shaft. knowing this I removed it form its
shaft and used a fine thread bolt to mount it onto my 200.  It was a simple
matter of drilling out the 3/8" hole that the old dead center used for its
mountings and making it 1/2" then screwing the bolt onto and in the live
center.Over all this weekend was not a total lost cause. A new toy and bonding

Re: wood lathe

2023-06-26 Thread Dexter Bland
Your digital control comment reminds me of a story I read several years ago
about a guy that bought a digital control lathe, set it up with a big chunk
of wood, starts to turn it on, then turns to his son and says "lets put on
our safety glasses". He starts the lathe not realizing the speed setting in
10x faster than he thought. The machine is so out of balance it starts
walking across the floor, throws the chunk of wood thru the garage wall,
falls over and unplugs itself. His son then says to his dad, "good thing we
put on our safety glasses."!
